2 Piston -2 SPI Pistons SPI Pistons are a high quality OEM replacement piston. Manufactured to OEM specifications, and made from the highest quality materials with all parts interchanging with original components. Piston kits include: piston, rings, wrist pin and circlips. "Moly" piston surface treatment The aluminum piston's surface is treated with a special coating that include flourine which increases surface hardness, reduces friction, and contributes to improved power output and durability. Piston and Ring Installation Guide for Snowmobile Note: This guide is for experienced mechanics and not complete for installing pistons. Trans Can Imports assumes no liability for any damage that may occur through following these instructions. Preparation - If the old piston has failed, determine the cause and remedy the problem before replacing the piston. Seizing on the exhaust side is caused by a too lean mixture ro air leak. A "four corner" style seizure is caused from insufficient warm-up or clearance. A hole in the piston is caused from detonation, a result of advanced timing or poor fuel quality. A broken piston skirt is caused from excess piston to cylinder clearance. To remove a piston, use a piston pin puller and heat piston if necessary. DO NOT HIT PIN WITH A HAMMER! Measure the cylinder for clearances and out of roundness, service limit is.003" out of round up to 65 mm/.004" out of round over 66 mm larger size. Cast iron cylinders - finish cylinders with a 220 or 300 grit stone. Nikasil or electrofusion clinders - if necessary can use a 500 grit hone to clean cylinder To prevent ring breakage, make sure all port edges are 30 angles with a radius of 0.9 to 1.4 mm. Tips If the cylinder is in good condition but has aluminum build-up from a seizure, muriatic acid can be used to soften and clean off aluminum during the cylinder preparation. Chrome plated rings can be used in cast or nikasil or electrofusion bore but CANNOT be used in chrome bore. Chrome was used in pre-1980's and early 1980 productions but seldom used after that. Always check that the ring end gap will not be in align with a port. By putting a mark on the top of the piston where the ring locating pin(s) are is a quick and easy way to check. Installation - Check piston to cylinder clearance before assembly. Typical clearance range for snowmobiles is as follows but always refer to manufacturers specifications: Bore Air Cooled Liquid Cooled mm " " mm " " 70 and up " " Check ring end gap, single ring piston's range is from ", while two ring piston's range is from to 0.035". Install pistons with arrow facing exhaust or on some Polaris applications, the arrow will face the magneto side of the engine. If wrist pin has a tight interference - heat the piston + oil the pin for ease of assembly Put a rag under the piston and install the circlips without bending or distorting them. Be careful they are tight in the circlip groove. Remove rag and make sure gaskets's are clean, oil the cylinder and install. Most engine builders like to position pin circlips at 12:00 o'clock or 6"00 o'clock positions. Break-in Procedure For the 1st tank of fuel on oil injected machines use a 50:1 fuel to 2-stroke oil mixture On pre-mix applications use 20:1 fuel to 2-stroke oil mixture for the first tank Avoid prolonged high RPM operations for the first 5 hours of engine time.
