1 GR-RRR8 R Wichita Pontiac Club s Monthly Publication May 2015 Think I will start with meeting place & time. That way you got the important stuff first and if you get bored with the last of the message you can quit. Meeting will be on May 17th, at my house 8367 Peach Ln. Derby, Kansas starting at 1 P.M. Weekend after on May 23 is Father Paul's car show. Had a flyer on it in last month's Newsletter. Check it out. Weekend after that is the 6th Annual Pontiac Tribute Day in Kansas City. That is sponsored by the Kansas City Arrowhead Club. The K. C. club was sure a big help at the POCI Nationals last year let's all go say thanks again. Flyer was in last's month s newsletter also. Will be talking about both show's at the May meeting. Need to thanks Russ again for hosting last months meeting and doing all the cooking. Job will done sir!! At the meeting we talked allot about the fee for the track at the Uprising. Think Mike as it worked out for the $4,500 like we paid last year. Hopefully by meeting time we will have a contract in our possession. The Mulvane Marauders June 20th show will have some indoor spots. INDOOR SHOW in Kansas in June is a no brainer. the indoor parking as a limited number of spots available. So send in the entry form now. Think we passed out 6 or 7 flyers at the meeting last month. Joe Stout talked Sam and myself into riding along with him and Sandy on the Oakland Breakfast tour at our Wichita POCI Nationals last year.

We ended up at the Wichita Country Club on West Maple for a great Breakfast. But it got me to thinking I had nothing in my collection from the Oakland Car Co.

These are actually make with Enamel so can chip pretty easy. So at the end of the swap meet after I had make a little money I brought it.

Here is a picture of the cars lined up in front of the Hyatt as we are about really to leave. We ended up at the Wichita Country Club on West Maple for a great Breakfast. But it got me to thinking I had nothing in my collection from the Oakland Car Co. Well, in our swap meet area was a Oakland radiator surround. It needed to be rechromed to look new again. The Oakland emblem in it was in very good condition. These are actually make with Enamel so can chip pretty easy. So at the end of the swap meet after I had make a little money I brought it. Have been working on it over the winter, and here is a picture of it done. Turned it into a nice display case for some of my other emblems or hood ornaments. Les Almost done with it, still needs a couple more screws in the sides and brace for the emblem before hanging on the wall.

Oakland Motor Car was founded in 1907 in Pontiac, Michigan, by Edward Murphy, a manufacturer of horse-drawn carriages. The following year, another former buggy company executive, William Durant, founded General Motors in Flint, Michigan, as a holding company for the Buick Motor Company. GM soon bought other automakers, including Oldsmobile and Cadillac. In 1909, Oakland became part of GM. The first Pontiac model made its debut as part of the Oakland line in the 1920s. The car, which featured a six-cylinder engine, proved so popular that the Oakland name was eventually dropped and Pontiac became its own GM division by the early 1930s.Pontiac was initially known for making sedans; however, by the 1960s, it gained acclaim for its fast, sporty muscle cars, including the GTO and the Firebird. The GTO, which was developed by auto industry maverick John DeLorean, was named after a Ferarri coupe the Gran Turismo Omologato and is considered the first classic muscle car. According to The New York Times: More than any other G.M. brand, Pontiac stood for performance, speed and sex appeal. Pontiac s sales reached their peak in 1984, with approximately 850,000 vehicles sold (about four times as many as 2008), according to the Times, which noted that experts believe GM hurt the Pontiac brand in the 1970s and 1980s by opting for a money -saving strategy requiring Pontiacs to share platforms with cars from other divisions.

7 The April 19, 2015 meeting was hosted by Russ Stuhr and his family with 19 members present. All enjoyed a cookout. Old Business-- Club T-shirt design was presented by Dan. Motion made to accept design and order 200 shirts, seconded and carried. Dan will get shirts ordered. Name Badges-- Dave C. presented different ideas for badges, discussion followed. Motion made to order 50 badges with club logo and extra blank inserts. Rita will get items ordered. Dave C. is doing a GREAT job on the web site. There is a new chrome shop in Wichita and Les will get in contact with them to see if we could get a tour. Uprising--- Need items for the Silent Auction. Had lengthy discussion on getting contract with the track. Since April 1 deadline was not met, track was going to almost double price and limit amount of time we would have the track. Mike Cooper has checked with other tracks in Kansas so we would have other options if no agreement could be reached with K.I.D. track. One possibility was the Great Bend Track, home of the First NHRA Race. Mike will work on the track. Agreed to put a $5000 cap for the track. Further discussion was the possibility of having a 2 day event in conjunction with the Hot Rod Reunion. We have trouble getting people to work a 1 day event. Tom mentioned that the Pontiac Uprising is dying as the die hard enthusiasts aren't getting any younger and not many new/younger people are getting involved. Always looking for new members. Discussed Swap Meet next February. Several members have their own booths and there won't be a actual "Club" booth. Meeting adjourned.
