Many thanks to Steve for lining up a great tour of Gas from the Past and the National Weather Service. No one left the cafe hungry either! It might have started out cool, but it was clear and sunny which is all you can ask for in February. We got to see a "new" car too as Higdons brought their fabulous 1955 Lincoln. Be sure to make plans for next month s tour on March 18th to Clinton and Jim Raysik's collection & Downtown DeSoto dealership and the Henry County Museum. Full details below. The auto show is in Kansas City next week, I usually go and then realize that old cars aren't really that expensive after looking at the new ones. If you haven't gotten your cars out for winter, don't wait much longer, the weather keeps getting nicer. The next meeting is in Lawrence, and note the earlier start time of 7:00. Happy Motoring! 3 1967 Mercury Cougar 2-Door HT Postcard from the collection of Kelly Flory *In a market where pony cars were a booming business, Mercury couldn t afford to be late to the party and introduced it s new Cougar. Heavily based on the already popular Ford Mustang, the Cougar rode on a 3 front frame stretch, and was seven inches longer overall. Most shared components were out of sight, giving the Cougar a totally unique look. Under the hood, Ford s 289 CID V8 putting out 200-hp was standard at $2,851. An upscale version dubbed XR-7 was available for $3,081. A 225-hp 289 and 320-hp 390 V8 were optional, as was a GT Equipment Package for $324. 5 ...Car Buzz... Do You Buy a Car or a Long Term Relationship? I wonder if he could do it. by Bob Vukas My brother asked me why we did not keep our Corvair. The answer was simple, no shops or mechanics were left in Topeka to fix it. The romance of a convertible looks good on TV and in print but in reality it is not that romantic. How long do I have to wait for that part? The Impala was stored away needing a turn signal cam cancellation kit. I ordered one in September. Today s estimate for shipping is March 3. Just because they Say it is so on TV, does not make it real. I watched a program where a woman paid $97,000 for a 4 door 1957 station wagon. It said Bel Air on the side and on the steering wheel but every other indication said 210, the lower priced model. I felt sorry for her but it was her car and her husband s and they were happy to drive away in their restored car. Do you think that Chip Foose and the gang at Overhaulin could restore a car as pure stock? They always make some changes to put their mark on it in some way. It would be nice to see one at SEMA done bone stock. Will you be ready for Spring Driving? Awakening our hibernating cars takes as much or as little as you put into them last fall. Did you drive them during this strange winter with little or no snow or ice? Everybody does things differently. Where did the Gas Shortage go? Former President Obama raised the EPA gas mileage rates into the fifty MPG range by the year This of course has created engineering by all companies and will continue to do so till the limits are met The bigger issues is pollution and coal is the much bigger supplier of pollution than cars. We have yet to see a clean coal bill or engineering to control our factories from that air pollution. Why is that? Ed Note: Minutes for February meeting: A brief meeting. Higdon s presented video slide presentation of their trips to Cuba. Refreshments were provided by McIntyres, Hartwich, Higdons and Kathy Griffith sent refreshments. Teaser shots of upcoming tour to Clinton, MO by Steve Hartwich A FEW TIMELY SUGGESTIONS (copied from 1909 REO Manual) by Bob Saderstrom Sage advice for the operation of the automobile carries through the ages. Pick the best of the road for your car. Treat it like you would a valuable horse, and your repairs will amount to practically nothing. Never drive fast around a corner. It is dangerous and very hard on tires. Do not attempt to go through a crowded street until it has become second nature to you to run your car. In going over the cross walks or chuck holes, aim to do so at as much angle as possible, thus equalizing the jar on all four wheels. This will save you a great many hard jolts. It is better, however, to take a hard jolt than to attempt to turn out too sharply. This is dangerous and especially at high speed, as it is liable to ditch you. On slippery streets run slowly and keep your car under control at all times. We advise all owners to study their own car and its adjustments, make your own repairs if possible. If not, be sure you have a competent man to do the work. If your car is doing good work do not allow anyone to tamper with it, but simply let it alone. If it does not work as it should, go over it carefully and locate the trouble. Do not drive your machine as fast as it will go---15 or 20 miles an hour is fast enough on country roads, and is the most economical speed, both in fuel and repairs. Tires are very expensive and should be handled carefully. Keep them in good repair---always pumped as they should be. If allowed to run flat they will rim-cut. Do not allow oil on tires as it will rot the rubber. Keep all parts of the steering mechanism properly adjusted, as lost motion in any one of them makes a machine steer very hard. Back firing in the carburetor is generally caused by a weak inlet spring, and may be remedied temporarily by pulling out (stretching) the spring and putting it back in place. Examine all nuts, bolt, screws, cotters or any parts that might work loose. This should be done quite often when the car is new. Do not allow your gasoline connections to leak, as it is dangerous as well as wasteful of fuel. If the motor stops or behaves badly on the road, look for some little trouble. Don t take the engine all to pieces. Published in Feb 2017 issue of VMCCA Kansas City Chapter newsletter Distributor While viewing this PDF, ON-Line, the links are active, click on them 3

7 TOMMY - THEN AND NOW by John Shaw Photos by John Shaw, Rich Gibbs & Linda Higdon The following text from the Belton, Grandview & Kansas City Railroad website: hp:// TOMMY s genealogy Built in 1923 by Alco at its Schenectady, NY works as stock but apparently at one time destined for the Cuban railroad system, it was never shipped. Ten years later, this oil burner was sold to the Okmulgee Northern Railway Co., as #5 aka "Tommy" and worked until 1958 in the oil fields around Okmulgee, OK, on a 9.9 mile shortline. Weighing 141,000 lbs, 122,000 lbs on its 48 drivers, #5 has 19 x 16 cylinders. Operating at a boiler pressure of 180 psi, it delivered 29,900 lbs tractive effort. #5 was sold to the Sonken-Galamba Corporation, a Kansas City, MO, scrap dealer in 1958, and was then bought by the Smoky Hill Railway & Historical Society some time in the 1970s. It is awaiting cosmetic restoration but, with a price tag in excess of $500, to rebuild, not including track improvements and shop facilities, it is likely to remain on static display. John at 5, Tommy a bit older, 1957 The above image was taken by Linda Higdon during a tour to Cuba. During the video program that Higdon s presented at the Sunflower Meeting, Februrary 10, 2017, John spotted the image as the same type engine as Tommy. The image to the right is a 1955 photo of an engine that my father, Hayes Shaw, hand built from scratch, not a kit model. As you can see, it is almost identical to Sam. He liked this type of locomotive. He was a Master Model Locomotive Builder. It was a life long hobby of his, in addition to photography. This image of it is from my family photos. I scanned it into my computer in I found this exact same image on The Hardin Collection owned by the Henryetta Historical Society just a few months ago. 8 75 years ago Along the Action Era Highways 1942 Cadillac Standard of the World Our Fortieth Year of Fine- Car Building Our Third Year of Defense Production New front-end styling, new fenders and new interiors highlighted changes for the 1942 Cadillac. All of the 1941 series continued with some mechanical improvements but several models were discontinued. Series 61 lost its two coupes and the Deluxe Sedan, but added the Dynamic Coupe (shown left), priced at $1,560, and the $1,647 4-Door Sedan continued. The Series 62 on a 3 longer, 129 wheelbase also lost two coupes that were replaced by a Dynamic Coupe for $1,667 and in Deluxe trim for $1,754. The 2-Door Convertible and both 4-Door Sedans continued. However the 4-Door Convertible was gone. The Series 63, 60 S and 67 all returned with the same models. The Series 75 also returned with all eight models, but it was the only series not to have the rear fenders extend to the rear door. 9 75 years ago Along the Action Era Highways 1942 Mercury More Power per Pound Featuring the Aviation Idea in an Automobile As with most new 1942 models the Mercury Eight featured new front end styling, and concealed running boards on the outside. On the inside, a new instrument panel design was introduced. Underneath suspension changes lowered the ride height slightly while improving riding comfort. Wheels were pushed outward slightly improving stability. And a front stabilizer bar was added. Five additional horsepower were added to it s V8 engine, now 100, by making intake and exhaust modifications. And Liquimatic transmission, available for $70, was Ford s first attempt at a semi-automatic transmission to satisfy customers drawn to Oldsmobile s automatic transmission. Mercury moved to a six model lineup for 42, dropping the 5-passenger coupe. Remaining were a 3- and 6- passenger coupe, 2- and 4-Door Sedans, a Convertible Coupe, and a 4-Door Station Wagon. Prices ran from $1,056 for a 3-p. Coupe to $1,336 for the wagon. Worldwide production was 24,704 for 1942 s war shortened year.
