2 About P.O.C.I. The Cruisin' Tigers GTO Club is the GTO non-regional specialty chapter of Pontiac-Oakland Club International (POCI), the premier national organization for Pontiac, Oakland & GMC enthusiasts. Why Join POCI? The Pontiac-Oakland Club International, the world s oldest and largest organization (over 8,800 strong) of Pontiac enthusiasts, is devoted to the restoration and preservation of Pontiac, Oakland and GMC vehicles. The POCI promotes the preservation and accurate restoration of these vehicles through its various services, publications and events. Local and specialty chapters are also available to further the POCI membership experience. $35 annually for U.S. membership.. Smoke Signals POCI s full-color, monthly magazine, Smoke Signals, is devoted to Pontiac, Oakland and GMC vehicles and their owners. It contains owner profiles, event coverage, technical data and restoration tips. You will find stories about our members and their vehicles, along with performance articles and news of chapter activities across the USA, Canada and around the world. The Classified section provides the membership with a forum for the exchange of parts, information and vehicle-related items. Ads from members, whether for sale or wanted, include parts, sales and service literature, and promotional items as well as complete cars. Classified advertising privileges are extended to members only - FREE of charge. Only Pontiac, Oakland and GMC related, non-commercial items are permitted. Web Site: The newly updated web site is a wealth of information for members: registration forms, tech forums, chapter news, event listings, convention information, online classifieds, ID codes, links to an on-line member forum, many vendors and sponsors- the list goes on and on. Members can also access on-line POCI member information including name, phone number and vehicles owned. The website is constantly adding new and useful information. Credit cards accepted include: VISA, Master Card & Discover. Technical Advisors The POCI Technical Advisor program has been a great success and continues to grow as membership expands and new needs arise. These advisors are board-appointed members possessing expertise in a particular area. Questions from correct paint and upholstery, to mechanical rebuilds, to performance issues, can be addressed by PO- CI technical advisors. Library The POCI library is a massive collection of Pontiac, Oakland and GMC literature, unlike any other, anywhere else. It contains valuable technical data (manuals, engineering reports, etc.) as well as marketing and sales information (brochures, posters, photos, material samples, etc.) All this is available to our members. Materials cannot be sent out, so photocopies are available at a modest cost. POCI Convention This is the gala event of the year for POCI, attracting hundreds of members and their cars from all over the world. The convention rotates annually to various locations throughout the US and is jointly sponsored by the POCI and the POCI chapter servicing the area or a POCI Specialty Chapter. 4 Tail-Less Tiger By Ken Smith Hey, hey, hey...what say we take a look back at this year s 24th Annual Indian Uprising? Well, this issue and next month s issue will be loaded with photographs taken by quite a few Cruisin Tigers. If you have photos that you took and would like to let other Tigers enjoy them, send them to me at Kenz64GTO@aol.com. Thanks. By the way last month s cover photograph was taken by Denny Vodvarka s daughter Sheri from her hotel room at our Uprising. A late Thank you is due... so thank you, Sheri. Well, this month s club meeting on Saturday Sept. 20th has moved (but only for the September meeting) to club sponsor RM Restorations at 549 West Sheridan Road in Lakemoor. I will have to use MapQuest from the internet to get my directions there, since my 64 didn t come equipped with Navigation software or screen. And I plan on being there at noon for the food, my friends and the GTOs... so come early. Then on Sunday September 21st club member Rich Kroon is planning a CARAVAN to Pontiac, IL to the Pontiac Oakland Automobile Museum for an all Pontiac car show. The cruise down there and back are a lot of fun, so join us and bring someone with you I am bringing my 15 year-old grandson Alex. (He hopes that my 64 is his when I begin to drag race in heaven.) There is a flyer with the date and time of this event in this newsletter. On a sadder note, Wally Visocnik s father passed away on August 28th at the age of 94. The entire club sends its condolences to Wally and his entire family. Gary Firch informed me there is a YouTube video on the internet of this year s Indian Uprising. It can be found at: YouTube.com then enter 24th Annual Indian Uprising All Pontiac Weekend Car Show. It is 5 minutes and 50 seconds long. Also, the cover this month is selected photos that I have received from Gary Firch of this year s Indian Uprising. Remember that this month we are not meeting at Mr. Beef & Pizza so DON T GO THERE! And we ll see you down the road (to Lakemoor or Pontiac). Saturday, October 4, 2014: Our first Fall color Cruise is planned thanks to the efforts of Member Rich Kroon. We plan to head North on Sheridan Road from Chicago's North side to Kenosha, WI. Along the way are several historic sites and forest preserves. Approximately 50 miles Meet At: Dunkin' Donuts, 6354 N. Broadway at 9:00am. 5 Notes From The Pres. By Randy Ray Our season is still in full swing, we won t be winding this down quite yet. We re coming off our best Indian Uprising ever, 453 cars, and it couldn t happen without the finest group of volunteers I ve ever met. And, it couldn t happen if we didn t have the best club I ve ever met to turn out in force and make it a success. This month we re heading north to RM Restorations new shop at 549 W. Sheridan Rd in Lakemoor, IL on Saturday (9/20) for our club meeting. Then the very next day, Sunday (9/21) we re meeting at the Denny s at Rt. 83 and I-55 for a 7:30 am departure for the Pontiac Museum Show. Two weeks later is our first Fall Color Cruise on Saturday 10/4, VP Rich has found us a beautiful route heading north out of the city up Sheridan Rd. ending in Kenosha. We ll have more details at the meeting. For the RM Restoration meeting Ron will be having his Open House starting at noon with sandwiches about 1:00, feel free to arrive early and enjoy some extended camaraderie. We ll have our normal meeting starting at 4:00 pm, please bring a chair as it ll be somewhat ad hoc. We ll be seeing our friends from the Midwest First Gen Firebird Club there as well. They helped bring in the Birds at our show and did a great job. Get to know em, the more Pontiac friends the better. Well, today s topic is hindsight is golden. First, on a personal level, if you re ever wondering about a situation and you need clarity, just imagine how the events will be viewed in the rearview mirror it ll really help keep you out of trouble. The automotive version is I just finished a follow up article on the Lambrecht Chevrolet Auction, a 59 Bel Air 4 door hardtop bought with 2 miles on it and never titled. The car was a little rough after being put outside in its final years but a collector of 59s bought it, cleaned it up, repaired the major issues (missing trim, dented door, and a serious clean and detail), it has not been, and his plan is not to start it. Reason being, cleaned now it is a timeless classic for restoration accuracy. Factory overspray was much more prevalent than anticipated, and many factory markings were still visible in some undiscovered areas. To start the car would burn the overspray off the exhaust manifolds and eliminate the wheel well (underside) markings. And remember, this went to a 59 collector, so he has cars to drive. In hindsight, the car was a bargain. I saw this car in its original condition and was unimpressed, I was wrong, hindsight is indeed golden. We all have similar experiences at swap meets or even when we re looking at cars. If it seems too expensive today, remember, 5 years from now the extra $150 won t matter, and if it really is the missing part you need, or just is the trinket that floats your boat do the deal. Let me justify my latest; I collect gas station maps, the older the better (and more expensive). This past week at Skip s a swapper had a number of 30 s and 40 s maps, these are much harder to find as remember a lot fewer cars and roads in 1938 than in Well, I pulled a Frank and Mike and bundled quite a few together for a $30 buy, that s a lot to spend on maps, but I got some great artwork maps (Chevron California), and really filled out the collection at a net lower price than any previous buy. I spent more than I wanted to at the swap, but in hindsight, wouldn t find that level of collection in my backyard again. So, do the deal; and for clarity, try your best to view it with the wisdom of tomorrow. It s now September, next month is October, we know a lot of people start putting their cars away don t, a great fall day, a little brisk outside is just a great day to go for a cruise. So take the car to the apple orchard, even give the heater controls a workout. And your car will like it too nice and cool, the temperature gauge solidly in the green zone and another fresh tank of gas run through will help too. So, happy cruisin and we ll see you up north this month.

6 August Meeting Minutes By Mike Brandt The meeting was called to order at 4:03 PM by 1 st Vice-president Ken Arendt, who is filling in for President Randy Ray who is out of town. He let everyone know that Jackie Rausa and Shirley Carlsen are going around the room selling 50/50 tickets. Ken asked if there were any new or first time attending members and there were none. Ken told everyone that there was going to be an investment car auction at the Boone Co. Fairgrounds in Belvedere, IL on August 29 th through the 31 st. There are some GTO s along with other Pontiacs that are slated to go on the auction block. Also, next month s Club meeting on Sat. the 20th will be held at RM Restorations in Lakemoor, IL, courtesy of owner Ron Moller. We had a monthly meeting at his facility a couple of years ago, but he has since moved to a new location. Check your for broadcast messages with further information regarding the new venue. The time will be 4 PM and there will not be an Uprising Committee meeting beforehand. An Uprising Committee meeting will be scheduled for another date to be determined. On Sunday Sept. 21 st there will be a cruise down to Pontiac, IL to participate in an event that will benefit the Pontiac-Oakland Museum. There will be a couple of staging locations from which we can all make the cruise to Pontiac together. Ken then gave the floor to Uprising Co-chairman, Paul Weinstein, to give a brief recap of the highlights of our Show. There was a record 452 cars registered, 160 of which were our feature car this year, the Firebird. We had more vendors and raised more money for our kid s charities than we ever have. Total sales of the 50/50 tickets for the two days was $2,750. The special celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the GTO was a huge success, and this is the first time the votes were tabulated on time. Also, the feedback from spectators and Show participants was very positive. All the seminars were well attended and very informative. Paul thanked all the members of the Uprising Committee and all the day of Show volunteers for all they did to make this Show the success that it was. There were also a lot of volunteers that helped out during the set-up on Thursday and Friday. To put the Show s success in perspective, we had more cars than the GTOAA Convention and the POCI Convention. Next was our Membership Coordinator and Golden Quill Award winning Newsletter Editor Ken Smith. He said that after picking up seven new members during the Show and some late renewals, our membership stands at 269. Due to the timing of our Show and when the printer got all the info he needs, Tiger News will be mailed out this Tuesday the 19 th. The electronic version should be in our boxes this weekend. In order to make the transition to an all electronic version, Ken sent everyone the version this month to work out any bugs that may come up. So you hardcopy folks will also be getting an version if you have an address on file with the Club. Ken went over the options you have if you want to still receive a hardcopy of Tiger News. It basically breaks down to an additional $2 per month per issue. At the next membership renewal in April 2015, you will need to pay an extra $20 above and beyond your membership dues to receive a hardcopy of Tiger News. Remember, as we ve said before, the electronic version is in full color, while the hardcopy is only color on the front and back cover. Ken Arendt opened nominations for expiring or vacant positions on the Board of Directors and Club Officer. Last month Nick Spensieri and Rick Last were nominated to continue serving as Board members and they accepted. There will be a vacancy in the Secretary s position, as Mike Brandt has served two terms, and cannot run again according to the by-laws. There were no nominations for Club Secretary at this meeting. The next opening will be for 1 st Vice-president because Ken Arendt will not seek re-election since he wants to devote more time to his position as Indian Uprising co-chairman. Bill Nawrot nominated Steve Lucas for 1 st Vice-president and he accepted. It was seconded by Nick Spensieri. Nominations are closed for this month and will be opened again at next month s meeting. The elections will be held in October. New terms will begin January 1, Next was Club member Ron Rocchi of Pontiac Performance to explain to us all about the Pontiac engine and what makes it tick, and fielded questions from the audience. He covered the different cylinder heads that came on our Pontiacs and what were the best combinations to achieve the performance we were seeking to attain, be it a nice smooth idling cruiser to a monster for maximum power and speed. He covered the various piston configurations and compression ratios and how to properly mate the entire rotating assembly and cylinder head design to get the most out of your Pontiac engine. He was a wealth of information and we thank him for his time and sharing his expertise with us all. Club member Gary Firch decided to clean out his garage a little and brought some very nice items to be given

7 August Meeting Minutes (cont.) By Mike Brandt away using the 50/50 tickets. The winners were: Denny Vodvarka, a portable air tank; Ken Smith, a package of microfiber towels; Jim Stern, a Raybestos sign; Mark Grimmenga, a floor jack; Ken Arendt, a paint spray gun; Jim Stern, a pair of jack stands; Jim Rausa and Jim Stern, some can coolers; and George Mazurek, a Meguiars detailing kit. Steve Lucas created a nice pen set that was won by Rick Bogoff. Thank you to Gary and Steve for your generosity. As we wind down, it s time to give some money away. The winner of the 50/50 pot of $76.00 was George Mazurek. The name pulled for the you have to be here to win pot of $ was CT#190, Mark Holniker. Unfortunately Mark was not present, so the pot rolls over until next month. The meeting adjourned at 5:40 PM. Why does a chicken coupe have two doors? Because if it had four doors it would be a chicken sedan.

16 Daily Herald Article on Indian Uprising By Matt Avery The Pontiac brand has been defunct for a number of years now. However, the passion for Pontiac vehicles is as active as ever. Evidence could readily be seen at the 2014 Indian Uprising All Pontiac Weekend car show Aug The Cruising Tigers car club hosts the event, which is now in its 24th year. Multitudes of Bonnevilles, GTOs, Firebirds, Gran Prix's and many other Pontiac models could be found on the grounds of the Du- Page Expo Center in St. Charles. "The brand represented the peak of styling and innovation during the heyday of the 1950s, '60s and '70s," said Randy Ray, president of the club. "Even today, people continue to fall in love with them." 1965 GTO, which was on display. The cars do have a special way of sparking romance. Marvin Minarich Jr. and his wife Kim were brought together by their lustrous Marvin purchased the vehicle in 2001 as a 16-year-old high school sophomore. He worked hard to accumulate the needed funds, buying and selling several other vehicles and working on a friend's car in his dad's garage. Minarich inherited his intense Pontiac passion from his father. "I was brought home from the hospital in my dad's '66 Goat (GTO)," the Morris resident said. Minarich's vehicle was sold new in Dayton, Ohio, but spent the next several decades in California. In 1992 the vehicle was relocated to an Illinois garage, where it sat until the purchase. "It was rust-free but sun baked, with faded paint and dry-rotted seats." Undeterred, the youngster bought the car and tackled the restoration himself. The immaculate Bluemist Slate paint was sprayed on in a friend's garage. By the time he started college in 2003, the muscle machine was on the road. The GTO soaked up Minarich's full affections unrivaled until it pulled up next to some stiff competition on the first day of choir class. "The professor had us go around and state one thing we enjoy doing. Kim shared she liked cruising in her parent's '68 Mustang," Minarich said. Likewise, Kim's interest piqued when Marvin revealed his enjoyment of the GTO.

17 Daily Herald Article on Indian Uprising (cont.) By Matt Avery "He came right up after class and we started talking," Kim Minarich said. "I thought he was kinda cute and we immediately hit it off." Their love blossomed and the pair married several years later. Naturally, their cobalt cruiser was incorporated into the ceremony, with the newlyweds driving off in the iconic classic. Their wedding day only began a life of making motoring memories together, as the couple cruises and attends car shows quite often. This summer alone they've accumulated 1,500 miles. This passion for vintage cars and culture bleeds over into both of their occupations. In 2004, Marvin opened his own restoration shop, Marvin's Motor City. One important overhaul was on his father-in-law's '68 Mustang. Kim, an elementary school music teacher, enjoys using the 1950s and '60s tunes to instruct her students. "Cars bring people together who normally wouldn't come together," Kim said, "just like me and Marvin."

20 Frankenmuth Car Show Photos By Bob Zeiger & Don Micetic A few Cruisin Tigers went to an event in Michigan the weekend of September 6th and 7th. Rick & Betty Last, Roger MacZura, Don & Anne Micetic and Bob Zeiger said they enjoyed it. Here are photos that Bob & Don took. Rick & Don won Founder s Choice Awards (which put their cars in the Top 25 of the 2,300 vehicles at this outing). That is amazing that Tigers won two of the Top Twenty-Five awards from all those vehicles, but they are sweet cars and very deserving. Congratulations to Rick and Don.
