1 ANTIQUE ENGINE & TRACTOR ASSOCIATION, INC. JUNE, 2008 NEWSLETTER Comments from the Prez. I am seriously considering trading a tractor for a boat. We haven t had this wet of a Spring for quite a while. Our Spring Heritage Day was a little slow this year. The electricity was off for the first couple hours and very light crowd. We did have several exhibitors and 3 wood carving craftsmen who we appreciated very much. We also had our friend with his small train. I think we only had about 3 youngsters but they had fun riding it. We have a number of shows and parades coming up. Please participate if you can. June 14 & 15 is the annual Father s Day show and parade in Geneseo. Contact Larry Goodwin. AETA has been asked to coordinate a tractor show at the Henry Co. Fair on Sunday June 29. Contact Larry Goodwin or Ernie Telkemeyer. Dave Carton is the contact for the Geneseo Farm & Fleet show on Sunday Aug. 24. There are many other shows and parades listed in the calendar section. Please participate as you can. The corn & beans are looking good at Atkinson despite the weather. A big thank you goes to the farm committee who is very diligent with this. At the June board meeting, the Long Range Planning committee presented a detailed plan and budget proposal to the board concerning the income and expense projections and site design for the new club location. This Sept. show features Case tractors and R & V engines. We would appreciate your help in locating and talking to potential exhibitors. It takes many hands to pull off these Fall Shows. We still have some positions open for help and a couple coordinator openings to oversee some areas such as gate admission. Please pass along potential exhibitor s names or contacts. Do you need a NEW clean AETA hat to keep your head cool or a coozie to keep your favorite beverage cooler? We have a good supply. Contact a board member. We are considering getting out of the clothing business. It ties up a fair amount of money for inventory. We have several vendors here locally that can produce whatever we want in a short time. 2 Coming Events June 14 & 15: Geneseo Father s Day Tractor Show We will have an information booth setup at the Geneseo Park Tractor Show on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15th. We will show videos of our past shows, handout flyers and answer questions about our club and show. We need volunteers to help man the booth from 9 AM 4 PM on Saturday and 10 1 PM on Sunday. This is your club; if you believe in it and want to see it grow for the future, help keep our hobby alive by volunteering. Please help us out. August 24th 4th ANNUAL FARM & FLEET SHOW Geneseo Farm & Fleet show will be held from 8 AM 4 PM. The show features antique tractors & pull type equipment, lawn and garden tractors, and hit and miss engines and displays. There will be door prizes, games, and a special door prize for pre-registration before August 20. (Must be present to win.) There will be store vendors to show their products and answer questions. For pre-registration or information, call Dave Carton , John DeRue , or Russ Gray NOTE: steel wheel & clete track may be on display but must be left on a trailer. Case Tractors By Larry Gay The Case R and RC models were revised for 1939 with the addition of a styled grill and hood, a fourth speed for the transmission, and a new Flambeau Red paint color. In July 1939, Case introduced the 3-plow standard-tread model D and row-crop model DC. These were actually the C and CC tractors with a styled grill and hood and the new Flambeau Red paint. The DC, which produced 35.5 belt horsepower at Nebraska, retained the 3-speed transmission, hand clutch, side rod and lever steering, and the extension hub system of adjusting the rear wheel tread. However, a fourth forward speed was added in 1940 and the clamp-on rear wheel on a straight bar axle design was adopted in Case announced the 4-5 plow, standard-tread LA as the replacement for the L early in 1940, but production didn t start until August The LA was a revised L with a higher compression ratio Case engine, a 4-speed transmission, a styled hood and grill, and the new Flambeau Red paint color. The LA produced 55.6 belt horsepower during its Nebraska test in August The Case S and SC tractors were introduced in November These new 2-plow models featured a styled grill and hood, a 4-cylinder Case engine, a 4-speed transmission, and the Flambeau Red color. The SC had a hand clutch, the side rod and lever steering, the roller chain final drive, and used large diameter rear wheels mounted on a straight axle to provide crop clearance and a range of rear wheel treads. Maximum belt horsepower at Nebraska was After the other companies introduced small tractors, President Clausen finally let the design work start on a new small tractor to replace the R series. The V series, introduced in late 1940, included the standard-tread V and the row-crop VC with a 4-cylinder Continental engine, a 4-speed transmission, a foot clutch, and a gear final drive. Assembled in the Rock Island factory with mostly purchased components, its profit was small. Therefore in November 1941, the V series was replaced by the VA series with a Case-built 4-cylinder engine. Although the VC and VAC were advertised as 1-2 plow or light 2-plow tractors, the VC was measured at 23.7 belt horsepower during its Nebraska test, more than the larger model SC. The V, VA, S, and D series were available in several versions including O (orchard). The J. I. Case Company experienced a 440-day strike at its Racine factories during 1946 and early 1947, which caused many of Case s best dealers to switch to another brand in order to have tractors to sell in the post- World War II boom. President Clausen s conservative approach to product development was illustrated in a survey Case conducted in 1946 in which the farmers asked for a foot clutch, more speeds, diesel engines, and better styling without the chicken- roost steering. Clausen continued to believe he knew what farmers needed and referred to a 1941 survey in which durability was the farmers first choice. Clausen resigned as president in 1948 and then served as the chairman until During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Case began to introduce design improvements for its line of tractors. The VAC was updated with an Eagle Hitch, a 3-point hitch without draft control, in 1948, followed by two steering system revisions which eliminated the chicken roost. A VAC-14 model with a lowered position for the operator was added in During this period, the SC and DC tractors received hydraulics, disk brakes, a foot clutch, live PTO and hydraulics, and the Eagle Hitch. The bore of the SC engine was enlarged which increased its output to 29.6 belt horsepower. LP-gas engines were made available for the S, D, and LA series. The last of the Flambeau Red series was the 500, a 5-plow, standard-tread tractor introduced in It replaced the LA and was basically the LA with power steering and a new 6-cylinder Case diesel engine which produced 63.8 belt horsepower at Nebraska.
