The Prez Sez... I can t believe we are already in the middle of August folks but we are! The nationals and Corvair s on the River are already behind us. I want to thank Joe and Carla for letting us come and enjoy a great day at their house, the weather worked out and the food was good as always. I think everyone left with a smile on their face and their belly s full. We had a short meeting after lunch and degust the Christmas party and about maybe having a few spaces at cavalcade this year. Get those vairs out and enjoy the last little bet of summer we have left! Wes Greiwe Upcoming Events Corvair Homecoming, Detroit Corvair Club, August 21 23, Plymouth MI, See details at detroitcor- 3
Just-A-Minute MINUTES OF JULY MEETING Meeting called to order by Wes. There were 13 members in attendance. There was no treasurer's report for this month. OLD BUSINESS The Mid-Ohio Meet was very enjoyable. Attendees from the Cincinnati club included Spencer and Wilma Duffey, Mike and Patty Demeter, Doug and Cindy Simon and Ralph and Sandy Gubser. Spencer and Doug won awards in their cars' respective classes. Congratulations! Everyone I spoke with seemed pleased with the new location. The Dayton club indicated that it may reserve the same spot again next year. NEW BUSINESS Corvairs on the River at Joe and Carla's home in Ripley is scheduled for August 9. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish to share. Let's get those Corvairs out! Since the regular Monthly meeting in August would be scheduled for the evening before Corvairs on the River, it was decided to hold the August business meeting at the event. As a result, there will be no regular monthly meeting at Mt. Healthy on August 8. The Corvair Homecoming will be held in Plymouth, MI on August This is always a very enjoyable event featuring many Corvairs and various activities for the Corvair enthusiast. Details about the show can be found on the Detroit Area Corvair Club website. Russ Brandenburg has a friend who has graciously agreed to allow our club to view his collection of exotic cars. The tentative date will be Sept. 13. More details regarding this event will be published as they become available. Meeting adjourned by Wes at 8:30 pm Ralph 4 Gubser, Secretary
MINUTES OF AUGUST MEETING Augusts meeting was held during Corvairs on the River. There was no financial report this month. Actual minutes were not keep. The topics discussed was the National convention in Tacoma, the Hamilton Car Parade and the upcoming Detroit Homecoming. Respectfully submitted, Ralph Gubser, Secretary Additional information on the Hamilton Car Parade As in years past, several members of the Corvair Club of Cincinnati participated in the annual Hamilton parade. Despite threatening weather the owners of six Corvairs from our club volunteered to enter their cars in this year's event. Another Corvair belonging to someone not affiliated with the club was also entered.. Ironically, the featured car this year was the Ford Mustang, whose 50th anniversary was being celebrated. The day was warm and muggy, but fortunately it was also overcast, providing some relief. A brief shower occurred before the parade began, but no rain fell once the parade was underway. The Hamilton parade is notable for its great variety of cars that are entered, Vehicles from the earliest days of the automobile to cars of the 1980's can be found on the parade grounds. In the Corvair class, the first place winner was owned by Tom VonDer- Haar (Joe's dad). Jerry Fry took second place with his freshly-restored Lakewood. In third place was Max VonDerHaar (Joe's son.) Dave Schwettman, Don Berding and Ralph Gubser displayed their Corvairs as well. As always, everyone there had a great time. Thanks to those club members who drove their cars in the parade this year. Let's try to have even more Corvairs in next year's event. 5 Ralph
From the Editor Thanks everyone for helping me with material for the newsletter. I know we are all busy but if you are like me, you really enjoy a newsletter with good material in it. We enjoy seeing how other folks are doing with their projects. I think seeing some of the stuff from the past is also really cool. This edition we have several picture based articles from the various events this summer. Keep the info coming! PS - I want to thank everyone that attended this years Corvairs-on-the-River. It was our 4th year. This year it was much cooler (nice) but the threat of rain was still with us. We had 7 vairs this year which did not beat our record of 10. Lets try to break that next year. Corvairs are getting cooler each year, when we took our drive to Ripley for the photo shoot we almost could not get pictures with all the traffic and lookers. Thanks Joe 6

Submitted by Doug Simon 66 Monza Coupe Project This adventure started in early 1993; yep, 21 years ago. I had a 66 4-door that I drove a lot, as I had wrecked my 88 T-Bird (not my fault) and it was being repaired. On the way to my 2 nd job in the Vair, I got distracted and rear-ended some guy. The crash pretty well mangled the nose of the 4- door; the headlights faced straight-up at the sky, and the trunk lid folded in half. Not long after, I began hunting for a good nose to put on the 4-door, as it was nearly rust-free. Ralph Gubser mentioned a coupe sitting in a garage not far from me, so on the hunt I went. Through Ralph and Hank Brav, I found it - a 66 Monza Coupe, Marina Blue on blue interior with 54,000 miles, and very nearly rust-free. An unknown engine problem doomed it to the garage in I made an offer, and the homeowner needed to call his dad, who owned the car. 20 minutes after I got home, he called; offer accepted. He agreed to hold it a couple of weeks, then Don Berding and I pulled it home. Soon after purchasing it, I found it had a spun bearing. I started on disassembling the back half of the car. All the rear-end was dipped at American Metal Cleaning, painted and redone with all new bushings and hardware. Along about then, I found a wrecked car with a living 140, so I bought that and transplanted it into my car. The entire bottom of the car was sandblasted, stripped and repainted. I kept telling myself I was overdoing it. New brake lines, interior and paint, and I could ve been on my way, but I only wanted to do this car once, so onward I went. All front-end pieces were taken to American Metal Cleaning and rebuilt, again with all new parts. Cindy s expression when the Clark s box came with suspension and steering and $1,100 later was that s it?! I moved to Dayton, and the car went into storage for almost three years while I lived with Cindy in her condo. Once we bought our house, the car came home. All through the 90 s, I worked on the car very little, an hour here and there. In 2002 when the car was brought home, I began more work, a little at a time. A lot of my time was spent getting the boys, Doug and Derek, through the teenage years. Once they moved out, I began spending more serious time on the car. The front suspension got finished, as did the trunk. The whole time I owned the car, I was buying and saving new and NOS parts for some day. 10
In 2010 the engine developed a knock; a broken piston. My son Derek and I rebuilt the 140. Don Berding s friend, John Shepherd, took care of all the machine work thanks Don! Once it was heard that the CORSA Convention would be in Kalamazoo in 2013, I set out to have the car done for it; this was late The car was stripped entirely. I welded in a new lower windshield panel; the old one was rusted out. Lots of pieces were re-chromed if I couldn t buy them new. A new Clark s interior was put in, and I started on the paint and the little body work it needed. The paint job, due to my own lack of experience and knowledge, took over a year, with one problem after another! Finally, it was time to re-assemble the car, with the 2014 Mid-Ohio as a target. The last week I worked 40 hours at work and 50 on the car. It s been a rewarding project and some good memories were created. I learned a lot and can now cross this one off my bucket list! 11
