November Meeting Minutes By Mike Brandt Club President Jim Stern called the meeting to order at 4:15 PM. He began by asking if there were any new or first time attending members. Randy and Debbie Dalton, who joined at this years Indian Uprising, were present for their first meeting and stated that they had a 1966 Tyrol Blue GTO. We all welcomed them to our Club. There were 48 members in attendance. He went on to introduce the Club Officers. First Vice-President Rick Bogoff was not present, because he was at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals at the Rosemont Convention Center manning a Cruisin Tiger table set up at the show to promote our Club and the 2012 POCI National Convention being held at Pheasant Run Resort in July As you all are aware, the CTGTOC is assisting POCI by co-hosting this convention. Jim also had membership applications to join POCI for those who are not members. I have been a member of POCI for eight years and can attest to the value of belonging to their organization. Their monthly magazine, Smoke Signals, and it s vast resource content is well worth the $35 annual membership. Jim let it be known that Betty Last and Jane Lucas will be going around at this meeting to collect for the 50/50 pot, and explained how the monies collected are distributed. He asked if anyone had seen the new GUS. For those of you who don t know GUS, he is member Doug Rudisuhle s 1967 GTO. Apparently, GUS has gone through some cosmetic changes. If you would like to see the new GUS, Doug had the car on display at the Muscle Car Convention this weekend. Jim announced that our own Tiger News had won another Golden Quill Award from Old Cars Weekly and thanked our newsletter editor, Ken Smith, for doing such a fine job putting our monthly publication together. However, Ken still needs our input, pictures and content to fill the pages. Ken thanked the membership for all the articles they have submitted during last year. Treasurer John Campbell gave his report on our financial health and everything seems to be as fit as a fiddle. Next, Jim presented the management of Mr. Beef and Pizza an appreciation award for allowing us to hold our monthly meetings at their establishment for many years. Jim asked Secretary, Mike Brandt, to give the final results for the Board of Directors election. Four candidates ran for two open positions. The top two vote getters were Rick Last and Nick Spensieri. Rick is an incumbent, and Nick will begin serving his term January Jim went on to thank Steve Lucas for his past service as a Board of Director member. Rick Last gave a brief overview of the POCI National Convention Committee meeting that preceded this meeting. He invited all members to attend these meetings and welcomes anyone who would like to be a part of the convention planning process. We can always use volunteers, whether they are involved for the duration of the convention or a day or two. Jim said we need volunteers to fill some of our tech advisory positions. Tim Ray will be our new 68 Tech Advisor. Any other persons interested in filling one of the other open positions is asked to contact our Chief Tech Advisor, Steve Lucas. For the past few months, Jim Stern has asked people to bring in items that may not be easily identified as soon as you see them. He will then ask the membership to try to identify the item and what it is or what it does. Some of this month s items were a graphite dispenser brought in by Jim, an AK-47 front sight adjuster brought in by Mark Grimmenga, Drew Carey and Mimi stuffed heads that spoke when smacked brought in by Ken Smith, a poverty cap remover brought in by Steve Lucas, and a humidor and pencil sharpener also brought in by Jim Stern. Have any unusual items in your possession? Bring them to the next meeting and see if anyone can guess what they are or what they do. Betty Last said she has 142 people signed up for the Club Christmas party on Dec. 10, The hall that our party is held in can only hold 150, maximum. She asked if anyone would like to sign up for the party today before the 150 maximum is reached. Our Club Crafter, Steve Lucas, brought in some beautiful items he created. He had a shifter pen set, a head-

November Meeting Minutes (cont.) By Mike Brandt light bezel clock, and a 6.5 Litre pen set with a barometer, clock and humidity gauge. As our final meeting of 2011 wound down, we had some items to give away using the numbers from the 50/50 tickets. Ron Rocchi and Larry Banks won GTO magnets, John Heyser won a Cruisin Tiger hat, Jane Lucas won an Uprising t-shirt and a GTO calculator, and Rick Last won a Sawzall donated by Steve Lucas. Rick also won the 50/50 pot of $ The name drawn for the big pot of $ was Mike & Jen Clarke. Unfortunately, they were not here so the pot rolls over once again to the February meeting. The meeting adjourned at 5:29 PM. Tiger Of the Year By Ken Arendt Editor s Note: Every year since 2000 our club s Officers select an individual or individuals that have gone above and beyond in support of the Cruisin Tigers. The annual Christmas party is when the announcement is made by our Club President of who has achieved this distinction. This honor includes: a traveling trophy with all winners names inscribed, a huge stuffed tiger to take to all car shows & cruise nights and the honor of having his ride on the back cover of this publication for the entire year. This is the letter sent from the new Tiger of the Year (Ken Arendt to Club President Jim Stern. Jim, I would like to offer my sincere appreciation to you, the officers, board and members for being selected as Tiger of the Year for It is an honor that I will treasure forever. As you made your announcement at the Annual Christmas Party, I was flabbergasted, somewhat speechless, and honestly, didn't know what to say. But as I now think of the moment, I do have one comment that I wish I could have mentioned with the Microphone in my hand. I would direct my comment to all those members who are not officers, board members, committee members and Staff. To those members, I would ask, just one time, to raise your hand and say, "I think I can do that, count me in". I've been involved in many organizations over the years, Booster Clubs, Management Clubs, Sports Clubs and Car Clubs. I have never regretted one moment of my involvement. Getting involved offers an experience that can only be enjoyed by those who do. But, don't take my word for it. Try it yourself, raise your hand, just one time, and say "Count me in". I thank you for the honor of being selected as Tiger of the Year and I appreciate the opportunity to be involved in the Club activities. "Count me in". Sincerely, Ken Arendt Another Editor s Note: Here is a picture of our newest Tiger of the Year, Ken Arendt (left) being handed the traveling trophy by our prior Tiger of the Year, Charles Singer (right). Congratulations, Ken!

January Board of Directors Meeting By Mike Brandt President Jim Stern called the meeting to order at 3:31 PM. Since there were no regular Club members with business to bring to the attention of the Board, the meeting went into closed session. Jim welcomed incumbent Board member Rick Last and newly elected Board member Nick Spensieri and congratulated them on their election victories. The Club officers were also in attendance, as were special invitees Ken Arendt (Tiger of the Year), Ken Smith (Newsletter Editor & Membership Chairman), John Campbell (Club Treasurer), and Mark Grimmenga (Club Store & PayPal). Jim also wanted to thank Ken Arendt for all his contributions to the Club during the past year. Thank you s were also noted for the service on the Board to Steve Lucas and Paul Weinstein. With a show of hands, Randy Ray was re-appointed as Chairman of the Board. John Campbell was asked if he would continue on as Club Treasurer, which he accepted. And last, but not least, Jim Stern was asked if he would remain as Club President. He accepted with the stipulation that this would be his last term. He felt that it was time for someone else to step up to the plate, so to speak. Jim said that we needed to seek successors for the longtime position holders within the Club. Since Paul Weinstein resigned his Board of Directors position as of 12/31/2011; Mark Grimmenga was asked to fill out the remainder of Paul s term and he accepted. It was discussed and voted on that all Board of Directors members and Club Officers shall be members of the Pontiac Oakland Club International, and remain a member in good standing for the duration of their terms. Also, any member who wishes to be elected to a Board of Directors or Club Officer s position must be a member of POCI to be eligible to be on the ballot for such position. Club Secretary, Mike Brandt, was asked to amend Section B of the Club by-laws to reflect this decision of the Board. Treasurer John Campbell passed out his annual report for the year ending 12/31/2011. After some discussion Board Chairman Randy Ray said he would like to explore some avenues of trimming the budget for He would like to trim our budget by 10%. A review of last year s expense detail included trophies, Mr. Beef & Pizza food for our annual club anniversary, silver & gold sponsorship recognition, show voting machine re-programming & reallocation of show expenses. Tiger News expenses were discussed in great length. Since the only income for our newsletter is from club sponsors, this is the largest negative expense of our club. Items discussed were: reduction of the number of printed copies by going to distribution; addition & retention of sponsors; and directing the income from membership go directly to Tiger News instead of the general fund. Other topics were: getting our sponsors to speak at our monthly meetings and monthly meeting attendance needs (tech discussions vs. monthly topic involvement). John Campbell has agreed to create a budget to define expenses within the club. Tim Dye requested money to purchase or lease a color copier for the Pontiac Automobile Museum. Based on the cost of in excess of $4,000 a unanimous vote of no was the response. Randy Ray then suggested that the club purchase 4 miniature wireless speakers for our meetings, since the members in the back of our room cannot hear everything that is discussed. Rick Bogoff will call Dave at 3-D Sound to see if he has an old system that he will sell us. Rick Last brought the need for renting a storage unit to securely keep all club equipment, awards, photos, etc. The cost is $66/month and a list of who has keys and a sign-out sheet of who took what will be inside the unit. A unanimous vote of yes was taken to get this unit. We will begin usage of this unit March 1 st. Next Membership Chairman Ken Smith was asked to make a presentation concerning members longevity in the Cruisin Tigers. He handed out a chart to each attendee showing by year of renewal the people not renewing and how long they were in our club. Why do we lose members after only one year? The two spikes of lost members after one year were the two years after the World of Wheels in 2002 and the Muscle Car &

January Board of Directors Meeting (cont.) By Mike Brandt Corvette Nationals in Both times we had free premiums to get people enticed to sign up and the majority of these members did not renew. Ken Arendt made a great suggestion to send postcards or the nonrenewing people as a final reminder. Considering past charitable causes a vote was taken to set a maximum of $5,000 for 2012 for United Cerebral Palsy. Also FTEA will receive a check for $1,000 for equipment for the children for this year. Rick Bogoff announced that there is the potential of having the new Miss America at the 2012 POCI Nationals if we make a donation to the Children s Miracle Network. ( She was the babysitter of Rick s grandchildren.) A review of our membership in POCI was the next topic. On April 1, 2011 we had 81 members in POCI of the 303 Cruisin Tigers, which was a percentage of 26.7%. As of January 21, 2012 we have 131 POCI members of our 295 members, which is 44.4%. We are heading in the right direction. The consensus was that the POCI publication Smoke Signals is worth more than the $35/year POCI membership fees. If any Cruisin Tiger is not yet a POCI member, they are encouraged to join by every member of your Board & all Officers. Ken Smith said that a mailing of a December issue of Smoke signals with a membership form and a cover letter will be mailed soon to all Cruisin Tigers that are not yet POCI members. Mark Grimmenga s handout showed a current inventory count of club apparel that he has. If you would like to purchase a shirt or cap, contact him. Creation of a club t-shirt was discussed. Larry Hoehler brought an idea for a Dave Bennett award at this year s POCI convention. Rick Last said there will be a video created at this year s show. Jim Stern asked all in attendance to support the idea that Every Pontiac is Worthy to attend the 2012 POCI Nationals. Jim s parting words at the close of this BOD meeting was If you are having difficulties with someone, walk a mile in their shoes. You re a mile away from them and in their shoes. The meeting adjourned at 5:55PM. Cruisin On Lake Car Show By George Mazurek Oct Cruisin On Lake car show. It was a gorgeous day in Addison, for their Chamber Of Commerce car show. Approximately 100 cars registered, for this participant judged show. Among the group of beautiful cars were 3 Cruisin Tigers. Nick Spensieri brought his beautifully restored Cardinal Red/ Sandalwood 1970 RA Judge convertible. Dick Brooks came with his 1966 Atoll Blue/White convertible. And George E Mazurek drove in with his unrestored but in progress 1967 Mariner Turquoise HO HT. Not only did these 3 cars drive to the event, all three drove home with honors: Nick received the plaque for best Muscle Car. Dick received the Plaque for Best Of Show picked by the sponsor. (porte brown). George received the plaque for Popular choice Best Display. We are proud to be Tigers and proud to show off our cars as a club.

Ethanol Issues By General Motors Since the '70s, enthusiasts have been living in the world of unleaded fuels and paying more for the privilege. To get to the bottom of the tank, so to speak, we talked with GM Powertrain fuels experts Bill Studzinski and Coleman Jones about some of the most frequently asked questions about fuels and their effect on power and fuel economy. FUEL: Today, most pump gas is blended with ethanol (called E10). Do I need to change any parts in my vintage car? GMPP: Original 1970's elastomeric seals and o-rings may need to be upgraded with newer premium, often fluorinated, materials such as Viton or the equivalent. Fuel system components and lines need to be checked regularly. If you can, use a water-separating fuel filter with replaceable filter elements and inspect or change them on a regular basis. Does my pre-'71 engine need a lead supplement to protect valve seats? It really depends on your application. Today's unleaded gasoline contains lower aromatic levels than gasoline of the '70s and '80s, which reduces the lubricity of the fuel. Additionally, most gasoline today contains 10 percent ethanol, and in pre-oxygen sensor equipped vehicles, this will cause a lean combustion charge and increased exhaust temperatures. If you are towing or racing, a cylinder head rebuild for your pre-'71 heads using premium valves and valve seat materials is a good idea. Does this mean I need to change the vehicle calibration to run well on E10? Yes, but only once. A one-time session on a chassis dyno with an experienced technician is your best bet for repeatable results and maximum power. They will have an oxygen-sensing tool that can accurately measure your air-to-fuel ratio and monitor the effect of any changes to the fuel or ignition timing while under load. I have hot start issues. Is the alcohol in the fuel causing the vapor lock? Vapor lock is a complicated subject depending on the fuel system type, the fuel volatility and underhood temperatures. Since you most likely won't be able to shop around and conduct analytical tests for the "right fuel" for your vehicle, follow these general rules of thumb: First, use the correct fuel for the season that you will be driving in, meaning lower volatility summer fuels in the summer and higher volatility winter fuels in the winter. To the extent that you can, during the summer, keep the underhood temperatures as low as possible. Long periods of stationary engine idling don't allow enough cool air to pass over the engine and cooling system. Finally, check your fuel system pressure to make sure it is up to spec. Most new Chevy, Buick, Cadillac and GMC vehicles are FlexFuel capable. Can I run E85 in my older engine? No. These older vehicles were not designed for E85. New GM FlexFuel engines are engineered with sophisticated technology to get maximum performance with this partially renewable fuel. They feature premium ethanol compatible fuel system, base engine and exhaust system components and material upgrades as well as combustion quality monitors that optimize engine performance while minimizing emissions. What if I change up the fuel system can I run E85? No. There are many hardware and calibration changes made to get a vehicle ready for E85. Typically, these calibration changes require a modern closed-loop control system. What about E85 and power-adders on my race engine? E85's high octane and charge cooling effect fit well with nitrous, turbos and superchargers, but the builder needs to be experienced, with special engine measurement tools to integrate the hardware and calibration for E85. Adding all this muscle without considering calibration leaves the retrofitter vulnerable to expensive engine repairs. Higher cylinder pressure in the form of boost from either a mechanical supercharger or turbocharger, and higher static compression ratios all help to get the most from this biofuel. The alcohol content of E85 boosts the cooling effect of fuel evaporation and creates greater charge density. This is especially noticeable in wet plate systems where the E85 and N2O are both vaporizing at the same time. Summing up: Blended biofuels are here to stay as long as their economics will support them. They help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG), hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions, and in the right circumstances, they can add significant power. Keeping your collector car or truck on the road while using biofuels will take some careful consideration, but with some routine maintenance and updated quality parts you can continue to get out and drive. Your classic GM vehicle needs regular use to prevent buildup of contaminants, keep fluids circulating properly and keep the seals and gaskets from drying excessively. It can make you -- and your car -- a lot happier in the long run.

Car Radio History By (Internet) One evening in 1929 two young men named William Lear and Elmer Wavering drove their girlfriends to a lookout point high above the Mississippi River town of Quincy, Illinois, to watch the sunset. It was a romantic night to be sure, but one of the women observed that it would be even nicer if they could listen to music in the car. Lear and Wavering liked the idea. Both men had tinkered with radios Lear had served as a radio operator in the U. S. Navy during World War I and it wasn't long before they were taking apart a home radio and trying to get it to work in a car. But it wasn't as easy as it sounds: automobiles have ignition switches, generators, spark plugs, and other electrical equipment that generate noisy static interference, making it nearly impossible to listen to the radio when the engine was running. SIGNING ON One by one, Lear and Wavering identified and eliminated each source of electrical interference. When they finally got their radio to work, they took it to a radio convention in Chicago. There they met Paul Galvin, owner of Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. He made a product called a battery eliminator a device that allowed battery-powered radios to run on household AC current. But as more homes were wired for electricity, more radio manufacturers made AC-powered radios. Galvin needed a new product to manufacture. When he met Lear and Wavering at the radio convention, he found it. He believed that mass-produced, affordable car radios had the potential to become a huge business. Lear and Wavering set up shop in Galvin s factory, and when they perfected their first radio, they installed it in his Studebaker. Then Galvin went to a local banker to apply for a loan. Thinking it might sweeten the deal, he had his men install a radio in the banker s Packard. Good idea, but it didn't work half an hour after the installation, the banker s Packard caught on fire. (They didn't get the loan.) Galvin didn't give up. He drove his Studebaker nearly 800 miles to Atlantic City to show off the radio at the 1930 Radio Manufacturers Association convention. Too broke to afford a booth, he parked the car outside the convention hall and cranked up the radio so that passing conventioneers could hear it. That idea worked he got enough orders to put the radio into production. WHAT S IN A NAME That first production model was called the 5T71. Galvin decided he needed to come up with something a little catchier. In those days many companies in the phonograph and radio businesses used the suffix ola for their names Radiola, Columbiola, and Victrola were three of the biggest. Galvin decided to do the same thing, and since his radio was intended for use in a motor vehicle, he decided to call it the Motorola. But even with the name change, the radio still had problems: When Motorola went on sale in 1930, it cost about $110 uninstalled, at a time when you could buy a brand-new car for $650, and the country was sliding into the Great Depression. (By that measure, a radio for a new car would cost about $3,000 today.) In 1930 it took two men several days to put in a car radio the dashboard had to be taken apart so that the receiver and a single speaker could be installed, and the ceiling had to be cut open to install the antenna. These early radios ran on their own batteries, not on the car battery, so holes had to be cut into the floorboard to accommodate them. The installation manual had eight complete diagrams and 28 pages of instructions. HIT THE ROAD Selling complicated car radios that cost 20 percent of the price of a brand-new car wouldn't have been easy in the best of times, let alone during the Great Depression Galvin lost money in 1930 and struggled for a couple of years after that. But things picked up in 1933 when Ford began offering Motorolas pre-installed at the factory. In 1934 they got another boost when Galvin struck a deal with B. F. Goodrich tire company to sell and install them in its chain of tire stores. By then the price of the radio, installation included, had dropped to $55. The Motorola car radio was off and running. (The name of the company would be officially changed from Galvin Manufacturing to Motorola in 1947.) In the meantime, Galvin continued to develop new uses for car radios. In 1936, the same year that it introduced push-button tuning, it also introduced the Motorola Police Cruiser, a standard car radio that was factory preset to a single frequency to pick up police broadcasts. In 1940 he developed with the first handheld two-way radio the Handie-Talkie for the U. S. Army. A lot of the communications technologies that we take for granted today were born in Motorola labs in the years that followed World War II. In 1947 they came out with the first television to sell under $200. In 1956 the company introduced the world s first pager; in 1969 it supplied the radio and television equipment that was used to televise Neil Armstrong s first steps on the Moon. In 1973 it invented the world s first handheld cellular phone. Today Motorola is one of the second -largest cell phone manufacturer in the world. And it all started with the car radio. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO. The two men who installed the first radio in Paul Galvin s car, Elmer Wavering and William Lear, ended up taking very different paths in life. Wavering stayed with Motorola. In the 1950 s he helped change the automobile experience again when he developed the first automotive alternator, replacing inefficient and unreliable generators. The invention lead to such luxuries as power windows, power seats, and, eventually, air-conditioning. Lear also continued inventing. He holds more than 150 patents. Remember eight-track tape players? Lear invented that. But what he s really famous for are his contributions to the field of aviation. He invented radio direction finders for planes, aided in the invention of the autopilot, designed the first fully automatic aircraft landing system, and in 1963 introduced his most famous invention of all, the Lear Jet, the world s first mass-produced, affordable business jet. (Not bad for a guy who dropped out of school after the eighth grade.)

Web Browsing By Club Members Whenever a club member sends me web addresses that are relevant to our hobby (or just plain funny), I will place them in this column. If on the other hand, I don t get any this column will disappear for that month. - Editor Truly amazing model cars. (from Jim Stern & Brandon Goodwin): Indian Uprising created by Liz Arendt. (from Ken Arendt): Insane risks motor race. (from Doug Rudisuhle): Greatest card trick ever. (from Doug Rudisuhle): My Dad s car. (from Roger MacZura): World s tiniest engine. (from Mike Brandt): Ormie, the animated pig. (from Doug Rudisuhle): Sistine Chapel. When you click and drag and zoom in and out, each area is visible--even the floor design. Move the mouse around and see what happens. Here is an amazing bit of technology that you would never see in person, as you would never be alone in the room. It is always very crowded and of course you can't see Michelangelo's artwork close up as you can here. This is especially spectacular if you have a large high-definition screen! Too many details to view on an iphone. To view every part of the Michelangelo s masterpiece, just click and drag your arrow in the direction you wish to see. In the lower left, click on the plus (+) to move closer, on the minus (-) to move away. Choir is thrown in free. Move the arrow and you will see every part of the chapel. This virtual tour of the Sistine Chapel is incredible. Apparently done by Villanova at the request of the Vatican. (from Doug Rudisuhle): Pure Hell, Michigan. (from Roger MacZura):

Web Browsing (cont.) By Club Members A Christmas song about the GTO. (from Paul Weinstein): A Pontiac Motor Division tribute. Watch it to the end and learn the reason behind the demise of American icon. Interesting. (from Roger MacZura): Richard Sandrok (a Cruisin Tiger) did a video on his 55 Chevy pickup. (from Richard Sandrok): High Score. (from Don Micetic): Brew City accident. Even though this happened on New Year s Eve, it s still important to share today. Matt & Linda Planning, owners of Brew City Engineering (manufactures of The Redi Rad) and supporter of The Indian Uprising were in a near fatal crash New Year s Eve. The people in Matt's car had no influence of alcohol, but I can t say that for the driver that T-boned them possibly driving with no headlights on. Linda suffered a severe concussion and Matt was pronounced "unresponsive" at the scene of the crash. Matt underwent surgery a week ago that included many broken bones (including a pelvis bone I believe) and a long surgery. He just came home from two weeks in the ICU. (from Paul Weinstein): American car brochures. (from Roger Zeivel): Kaleidoscope. Hang on to your seat. If you start to feel dizzy, just hang on to your chair. This is really incredible! How amazing that someone could not only create this, but make it to change when you move your mouse/cursor...or you can just sit back and let it change by itself. Either way it is awesome. Very nice...and pure genius! Also, if you put your cursor right in the middle of the screen, it is truly amazing. (from Doug Rudisuhle): Battle Hymn of the Republic. (from Doug Rudisuhle): Chuck Woolery on how to correct our nation s finances. (from Doug Rudisuhle):

December 2011 Christmas Party By Ken Smith The evening of December 10th allowed club members the opportunity of wishing each other Seasons Greetings at the Annual Christmas Party at Giuseppe s in Des Plaines. Betty Last & Jane Lucas did their normal, annual, excellent job of creating a festive event that all attendees would fondly remember for years to come. This event showed our club motto at its finest Fun, Family & GTOs. Santa was present to hand out presents. (Say that three times fast.) And Ken Arendt (our newest Tiger of the Year) was introduced to the crowd. (He was stunned.) So view the photos that Mark Grimmenga took during this evening and enjoy. We did!
