SHINKAWA Sensor Technology applies strict quality control and inspections to ensure the high reliability of its products. This instruction manual contains descriptive information, specifications, and operating, setting, and adjusting procedures. Please study the contents of this manual and related manuals thoroughly before installing or operating the equipment, and keep it handy for future reference. "Safety Conventions" Please thoroughly study the following section entitled "Safety Conventions" before operating the equipment. The safety symbols explained in this section are placed outside the left margin next to the text to which they apply. This unit is designed for use by specialists or persons thoroughly familiar with the field. Make sure that the end user receives the Instruction Manual delivered with this unit. Before use... When the unit is received, inspect it for damage suffered in transport and check whether it is the item you ordered. In the unlikely event that it was damaged in transport or does not function according to specifications, please contact the SHINKAWA Office or dealer nearest you. Store the unit under the ambient conditions given in the specification. Avoid places where it is exposed to high humidity or corrosive gases. i

This manual contains important information designed to prevent personal injury and property damage, and ensure safe operation of the equipment. Familiarize yourself with the signs and symbols explained below before proceeding to read the manual, and observe the instructions given. Explanation of signs Symbols WARNING CAUTION Explanation Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to permit for property-damage-only accidents. "Serious injury" refers to such injuries as loss of eyesight, injuries, burns (due to heat or cold), electric shock, fractures, and poisoning, that have permanent aftereffects and require hospitalization or long-term outpatient treatment. "Moderate or minor injury" refers to such injuries as burns and electric shock that do not require hospitalization or long-term outpatient treatment. "Property-damage-only accidents" refers to consequential damage related to destruction of property and damage to the equipment. 4 SAFETY CONVENTIONS VM-5Z3 To ensure safe use of this equipment, strictly observe the safety precautions provided in this manual, as well as installation methods and methods of use stipulated by laws and regulations. SHINKAWA Sensor Technology will not be liable for damage, etc. due to methods of use contravening to the instructions provided here. Safe use WARNING Connect earth wire Make sure to ground. May cause electric shock or malfunction. Make sure to turn the power off before any wiring work. Will cause electric shock. CAUTION MANDATORY MANDATORY Make sure that the power supply connected to the power supply input terminals has the specified voltage and frequency. Will cause damage and malfunction of the instrument. Install the power supply unit in the desired location in the instrument rack. Will cause damage to the instrument and malfunction of the turbine monitoring system. Do not touch parts and soldered surfaces of the power supply unit. Will cause damage and malfunction of the instrument. The power supply unit is a precision instrument. Take care not to expose it to excessive shock or vibration. Do not change the parameter settings during operation. May cause unexpected alarm output. Make sure not to touch internal printed curcuit board. Will cause damage and malfunction of the instrument. Do not measure insulation resistance and dielectric strength other than those at places specified. Will cause damage to the instrument. Do not remodel this monitor unit without permission. Otherwise the guarantee can not be made. iii

5 SAFETY CONVENTIONS VM-5Z3 EMC(Electro-magnetic compatibility) The EMC of each VM-5 Series monitor is evaluated by various noise tests. However, its characteristics may vary with on environmental conditions such as the magnitude of noise, ambient temperature, humidity and the arrangement of equipment. For the above reason, when operating the monitor, please observe the following CAUTION. CAUTION MANDATORY MANDATORY MANDATORY MANDATORY MANDATORY The unit should be operated by specialists or people who have its knowledge. When a shielded cable is used, the length of the unshielded cable section should be less than 100mm. For each relay used near this unit, devices related to this unit or signal cables connecting the unit and these devices, install a surge killer. Firmly tighten each screw used for mounting each unit. In additional, always close the face plate for the unit, then fix it with knurled screws. In order to prevent the system from its malfunction when the unit fails, provide the systematic interlock function. Do not wire input signal cables in parallel with control and power cables. It is recommended that separated wire ducts be used for these cables. Do not use any radio equipment near the unit. Noise filter Noise transmitted through in each cable may be rejected to some extent by inserting a ferrite core in the cable (note 1). If the cable passes through noisy surroundings, it is recommended that such a noise prevention device is used. (note 1) ZCAT : TDK iv

7 1. GENERAL INFORMATION VM-5Z3 OVERVIEW This unit supplies power to all VM-5 Series Monitor Units accommodated in the same rack. Note) In the case of using VM-5Z3 Power Supply Unit, the operating temperature of the rack with the monitor units and the relay module units shall be limited to 0 to 50 C (32 to 122 F). VM-5Z3 Power Supply Unit have not the power supply OK indicator and the function of the Alarm contact output. Mandatory Carefully read both this manual and the manual for each VM-5 Series monitor unit used in combination with this power supply unit. Caution If megger test is made on the cable connected to the power supply unit, disconnect the cable from power supply unit. Be sure to discharge the charged electric load before connecting the cable to the power supply unit. If this caution is not adhered to, power supply unit could be damaged. 10 4. INTERCONNECTION VM-5Z3 Warning Beware of electric shock from high-voltage parts. To prevent accidents due to electric shock, do not touch the input-output terminal block of the power supply unit until it has sufficiently discharged. Mandatory Make sure to confirm that the power supply voltage matches that of the equipment. Use cables with more than 2mm 2 stranded conductors for wiring of the power supply input terminals. Make sure to ground the GND terminal. Connect earth wire Power supply input (24VDC±10%) +24VDC 0V F.GND + 24VDC - F.GND Input terminal block Warning Make especially sure not to reverse the polarities as this will cause serious damage. Connection to an AC power supply will result in serious damage to the power supply unit. Make sure to check for wiring errors before turning on the power. -4-

13 6. MAINTENANCE VM-5Z3 The fuse usually has a life of 5 to 6 years if used continuously at 70 80% of rating. WARNING However, considering that : (1) A fuse, in which current always flows, deteriorates when exposed repeatedly to influences such as rises in surface temperature and temperature rise due to heat radiating parts in the surroundings that promote oxidation, or a gas atmosphere that accelerates chemical reactions; (2) A fuse deteriorates gradually each time it is exposed to rush current, line surge voltage, etc. when the power is turned on and off during maintenance or adjustment; (3) Vibration and shock promote deterioration of a fuse; and to allow for a safety margin, it is recommended to replace the fuse every 3 years. Their service life varies according to the conditions of use, but for preventive maintenance it is recommended to check the capacitors listed below in 5-year cycles for characteristic deterioration and replace them as necessary. 14 6. MAINTENANCE VM-5Z3 6-1 FUSE REPLACEMENT Warning Beware of electric shock from high-voltage parts. To prevent accidents due to electric shock, do not touch the input-output terminal block of the power supply unit until it has sufficiently discharged. (1) Turn OFF the power switch of the unit. (2) Turn the fuse holder counterclockwise and remove the fuse. (3) Insert a new fuse and install the fuse holder by screwing it in clockwise. 6-2 REPLACEMENT OF POWER SUPPLY Replacement of aluminum electrolytic capacitors and switching power supply should be carried out by SST. MANDATORY To remove or install the monitor, proceed according to the instruction manual of the instrument rack. Failure to turn off the power before pulling the power supply unit out of, or inserting it into the rack will result in serious damage and accidents. Do not touch the main board and swiching power supply with bare hands. (1) The power supply of a power supply unit is turned off. (2) Remove the screws at the top and bottom of the unit. (3) Pull out unit. And it exchanges for a new unit. (4) Fasten the screws at the top and bottom of the unit. 15 Warranty The warranty period for the delivered product shall be 3 years from the date of delivery from our factory. But the warranty period for the special order product and software shall be 1 year, and for the repairing parts shall be 6 months. In the event that the delivered product develops any defects within the warranty period for which Shinkawa Electric is liable, the defective part will be replaced or repaired in our factory at our own expense. In the event that an engineer needs to be dispatched for repair purposes during the warranty period, travel expenses for the said engineer will be changed in accordance with the above item. The cost of repair will be borne by Shinkawa Electric. However, the following are excluded from our warranty: (1) Any defects due to improper handling or operation by the user. (2) Any defects, the case of which is not attributable to Shinkawa Electric. (3) Any modifications or repairs made by others then Shinkawa Electric or persons commissioned by Shinkawa Electric. (4) Any handling, storage and operation under severe environmental conditions that exceed the design specifications. (5) Any defects due to fire, flood, earthquake, lightning and other Acts of God. (6) The consumables (7) Other defects considered not to be attributable to Shinkawa Electric. This warranty applies exclusively to the delivered product units. Shinkawa Electric will not be held liable for consequential damage caused either directly or indirectly through a defect of the delivered product. The warranty period and scope of machinery and equipment made by manufacturers other than Shinkawa Electric shall be in accordance with the conditions of the respective manufacturer, regardless of the provisions made above.
