1 Mid-February 2015, Volume 17, No. 4 Forward Collision Alert Operation and Timing Settings The Forward Collision Alert (FCA) system (RPO UEU) available on the Equinox and Terrain is designed to help drivers avoid or reduce the harm caused by front-end crashes. When approaching a vehicle ahead too quickly, the FCA system provides a red flashing alert and rapidly beeps. TIP: The FCA system is a warning system only and does not apply the brakes. System Operation The FCA system uses the following components: The Frontview Camera Module, mounted in front of the rearview mirror at the top of the windshield, looks toward the roadway ahead to detect vehicles. It communicates with the instrument cluster to illuminate the indicators on the Vehicle Direction Display, the Driver Information Center (DIC) to display messages, and the infotainment system for audible alerts. The FCA switch on the steering wheel provides an input to the Frontview Camera Module to select between the four alert timing settings. The Vehicle Direction Display contains the alert indicators. The indicators are controlled by the instrument cluster via serial data messages from the Frontview Camera Module. The infotainment system controls the audible alert for the FCA system. If there is an FCA system malfunction, DTC B1011 (System Disabled Information Stored Malfunction) may be set. Check the Frontview Camera Module disable history for more information about what affected the operation of the system. 2 Forward Collision Alert continued from page 1 Object Detection The FCA system detects vehicles within a distance of approximately 197 feet (60 meters) and operates at speeds above 25 mph (40 km/h). The system provides the following warnings: Vehicle Ahead When a vehicle is detected by the Frontview Camera Module, the vehicle-ahead indicator will illuminate in green on the Vehicle Direction Display, which is located on top of the instrument panel. Some vehicles may not be detected on curves or hills, or if there are poor visibility conditions. The FCA system also will not detect another vehicle ahead until it is completely in the driving lane. Front view camera module Tailgating Alert When following a detected vehicle ahead much too closely, the red collision alert indicator will stay illuminated continuously on the Vehicle Direction Display until the following distance is increased. Once the distance is increased, the green vehicle ahead indicator will illuminate again. Collision Alert When the vehicle approaches another detected vehicle too rapidly, the red collision alert indicator will flash on the vehicle direction display and sound several high-pitched beeps. When the collision alert indicator flashes, the hydraulic brake assist function may prepare for driver braking to occur more rapidly, which can cause a brief, mild deceleration of the vehicle. The driver should continue to apply the brake pedal as needed. The hydraulic brake assist function is designed to support the driver in emergency braking situations. The Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) receives inputs from the brake pressure sensor. When the EBCM senses an emergency braking situation, it will actively increase the hydraulic brake pressure to a specific maximum by turning the pump motor on. Conditions Affecting Operation The FCA system may not detect a vehicle ahead if the Frontview Camera Module is blocked by dirt, snow, or ice, or if the windshield is damaged. In these cases, the vehicle ahead indicator will not be illuminated. It may also not detect a vehicle on winding or hilly roads, or in driving conditions that can limit visibility, such as fog, rain, or snow. Keep the windshield, headlamps, and FCA sensors clean and in good condition to help ensure proper operation. TIP: The FCA system may provide unnecessary alerts for turning vehicles, vehicles in other lanes, objects that are not vehicles, or shadows. These alerts are normal operation and the vehicle does not need service. Setting the Alert Timing The collision alert indicator flashes The alert timing of the FCA in red when approaching a detected system can be changed or disabled using the FCA switch on vehicle too rapidly. the left side of the steering wheel. Continuously press the Collision Alert button to set the FCA timing to Far, Medium, Near, or Off. The setting is displayed in the DIC on the instrument cluster. FCA system steering wheel control The Vehicle Ahead indicator displays in green when a vehicle is detected. The timing of the alert will vary based on vehicle speed. The faster the vehicle speed, the farther away the alert will occur. Thanks to Doug Daugherty and Michele Metz-Tippy 2 Mid-February 2015
3 Fuel Gauge Does Not Read Full The fuel gauge may not read full, instead only reading 7/8 full, after filling the fuel tank on some LaCrosse, Regal, XTS, and Malibu models. This condition may be caused by build variation of the fuel level sensor sending the incorrect fuel level value to the ECM. Depending on the model, a new fuel fill shutoff valve and/or fuel level sensor has been released to address the condition. New Fuel Fill Shutoff Valve and Fuel Level Sensor TIP: This repair is only for the following models The fuel gauge may read only 7/8 full. that have a 15.8-gallon (60 L) fuel tank capacity. Refer to #PI1161A for more information. On 2013 LaCrosse, Regal, and Malibu LT or LTZ eassist models equipped with the 2.4L L4 engine (RPO LUK) and 2013 Malibu LS models equipped with the 2.5L L4 engine (RPO LCV), the fuel level sensor and shutoff valve should be replaced if the fuel gauge does not read full after filling the fuel tank. The fuel level sensor kit is PN The fuel sender shutoff valve is PN To unsnap the original shutoff valve, use a plastic trim stick to pry the tabs out. When replacing the shutoff valve, make sure the windows on the valve point outward. Do not lubricate the O-ring on the new shutoff valve. New Fuel Level Sensor Only TIP: This repair is only for the following models that have an 18.5-gallon (70 L) or 18.6-gallon (70.4 L) fuel tank capacity. Refer to #PI1401 for more information. On the following front-wheel drive models: Install the new shutoff valve with the windows on the valve pointing outward LaCrosse and XTS models equipped with the 3.6L V6 engine (RPO LFX), Regal models equipped with the 2.0L L4 engine (RPO LHU, LTG) or 2.4L L4 engine (RPO LEA), and Malibu LT or LTZ models equipped with the 2.0L L4 engine (RPO LTG) or 2.5L L4 engine (RPO LKW), the fuel level sensor only should be replaced if the fuel gauge does not read full after filling the fuel tank. The fuel level sensor kit is PN Thanks to Dallas Walton and Christopher Crumb UPDATE: New Door Latch Design The door latch on the 2015 Colorado and Canyon features a new design that operates differently from the previous common GM design. This new latch design also is used on 2014 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500; 2015 Silverado and Sierra; Impala and CTS Sedan; and XTS and ATS. On the previous generation door latch, a closed fork bolt would open when the outside door handle lever was pulled. On the new generation door latch, the closed fork bolt does not open freely when the outside door handle lever is pulled. Force must be applied to release the bolt. This new design provides enhanced sound quality when opening and closing. Technicians that close the latch when working on a vehicle to stop the door chime from sounding will need to open the latch manually before closing the door. Do not replace a door latch because the bolt does not spring open. Thanks to Scott Sorbie New door latch design Mid-February
4 Maximizing Heating Performance In extremely cold ambient temperatures, the small displacement energy efficient engines the 1.2L L4 engine (RPO LL0), 1.4L L4 engine (RPO LUJ, LUV) and 1.8L L4 engine (RPO 2H0, LUW, LWE) available in the Cruze, Sonic, Encore, Spark and Trax may not generate the amount of heat needed to warm the cabin as quickly as expected. When compared to older, less efficient engines, these energy efficient engines may not generate the same amount of heat at idle or when driven a short distance under light engine load to reach normal engine coolant operating temperatures as indicated by the engine coolant temperature gauge, resulting in less heat from the heater outlet ducts early in a drive cycle. For vehicles with manual heater controls or an automatic climate control system in manual mode, instruct owners, during extremely cold ambient temperatures, to set the fan speed on a medium setting instead of a high setting when the vehicle is warming up or during a remote start. This will result in warmer outlet temperatures sooner. When the blower is operated on a high speed with extremely low ambient temperatures, the heater core will pull more heat out of the coolant than the engine can produce at idle or low speed, which causes the engine and outlet temperature to be slower to warm up. Automatic climate control is optimized for these settings only if the system is operated in Auto mode. TIP: Owners should not set the manual climate control fan speed to a high setting before a remote start. This will extend the time needed to warm the cabin during a remote start. Thermostat Check If there is a concern regarding heater performance, check for any DTCs and follow the appropriate Service Information. If no DTCs are set, verify that the engine coolant in the radiator surge tank is at the correct level. Do not replace the engine coolant thermostat unless a DTC is set that is related to the thermostat. The ECM monitors the thermostat each key cycle to ensure that it is operating within design parameters. If there are no DTCs, the engine coolant level is correct and the thermostat is diagnosed as operating correctly, then a concern that the engine is slow to reach normal coolant operating temperatures should be considered as a normal operating condition. Thanks to Steve Bruder Aftermarket Equipment Connected to Multi-Media/ Auxiliary Ports during Diagnosis When diagnosing any infotainment system conditions, including blank displays, flashing displays, error or update failed messages, the navigation map not loading, Bluetooth concerns or USB concerns, on some ATS, CTS, SRX, and XTS models equipped with CUE infotainment systems; Regal, LaCrosse, Canyon, Sierra, and Yukon models equipped with IntelliLink infotainment systems; and Colorado, Corvette, Impala, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe models equipped with MyLink infotainment systems, check and remove any devices plugged into the USB ports, SD card slots, or 12-volt accessory ports. Remove any devices plugged into the USB ports, SD card slot or accessory power outlets. Any aftermarket equipment should be unplugged prior to diagnosing any infotainment conditions. SD cards that mount almost flush to the slot may be difficult to see. USB port behind display screen Many vehicles also have a USB port that can only be accessed by raising or lowering the radio display/control assembly. Verify that there are no devices in the storage bins behind the display/control assemblies, if applicable. Thanks to Hassan Abdallah 4 Mid-February 2015
5 Interior Rattle Sound when Idling in Reverse or Drive A rattle or buzz sound may be heard inside the passenger compartment while the vehicle is idling with the automatic transmission in Reverse or Drive on some Camaros equipped with the 3.6L V6 engine (RPO LFX). This sound is more prevalent with the transmission in Reverse. When the transmission is shifted into Park or Neutral, the sound may no longer be heard. Typically, the rattle or buzz sound can be heard more easily in the passenger compartment than outside the vehicle. The sound may seem to be coming from the steering column or the instrument panel cluster area. If a rattle or buzz sound can be heard in the vehicle interior, inspect the LH engine mount. This mount is located below the driver-side exhaust (#1) and the steering linkage (#2) in the photo. Although this condition is found more commonly in the LH mount, it is also possible to have this sound coming from the RH engine mount as well. Both engine mounts in the vehicle use the same part number. LH engine mount LH engine mount located below the driver-side exhaust (#1) and the steering linkage (#2) The sound is louder when the transmission is in Reverse due to the increased engine torque that is being transmitted through the mount. Depending on the severity of the condition, the sound may be reduced or eliminated entirely when the transmission is shifted into Drive. Use the chassis ears tool or a piece of bulk spool heater hose to confirm the noise is coming from the LH engine mount. If a piece of hose is used, place one end of the hose on the engine mount as shown in the photo. Listen through the end of the hose to confirm that the noise is coming from the engine mount. Hose placed on the engine mount If the noise is not coming from the engine mount, continue with the appropriate Service Information diagnostics. If the noise is coming from the engine mount, the mount should be replaced with PN TIP: The new engine mount will not be a different or superseded part number, but it will be an improved design to eliminate the potential for this condition to occur. A high-pitched whine sound may be noticed when driving some Silverado, Sierra; 2015 Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon models and Escalade models in Auto 4WD (RPO NQH or NP0). The sound is intermittent with no noticeable pattern. The Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) on these vehicles is located next to the accelerator pedal and is not covered by any close-out or hush panels. When the TCCM has to move the transfer case actuator motor, the higher current passing through the module causes an electronic TCCM next to the accelerator pedal buzz or whine within some of the capacitors in the module. Typically, this sound can be heard only with all accessories and the climate controls off and only when actuator movement is required. The high-pitched whine sound does not indicate a concern with the module and should not be replaced to address this condition. Thanks to Steve Schipansky Inoperative Rear Camera or Radio On some SRX models, the rear camera or radio may be inoperative. DTC B127B sym2b (Rearview Camera Input Signal Circuit Missing Reference) may be set in the Human Machine Interface (HMI) control module. If this condition is present, disconnect the HMI X1 connector and then turn on the ignition. Verify that 12 volts is present at the HMI X1 connector, terminal 5, circuit 5986 (High Speed Wake-up). If voltage is present, continue with the appropriate Service Information diagnostics. If no voltage is present, inspect connector X205 (the instrument panel harness to the body harness, located in the passenger compartment under the carpet under the passenger seat) for possible terminal damage on circuit 5986 (terminal 19 of X205).
