4 Pumping Requirements For AB Sciex QQQ users: before installing the DART on an AB Sciex instrument, please check with IonSense to verify that your backing pumps are of high enough capacity to maintain the MS vacuum while the DART flows helium gas. It may be necessary to purchase and install a second backing pump for your MS before you can use the DART. In this case, IonSense will provide a T and the other necessary parts to connect the two pumps together. For AB Sciex Q Trap users: the pumping capacity of your instrument should be sufficient to install the DART without the addition of a second roughing pump. Installation of the AB Sciex Interface First, before installing the DART interface, place the Sciex Instrument in Standby mode. Then, carefully remove all gas and electrical connections from the AB Sciex APCI source and remove the source from the instrument. The source area should look like the one in the figure below. Carefully remove the cover plate and set that aside. Caution: the cover plate may be very hot. Figure 1: AB Sciex Source Region Once the AB Sciex source and cover plate are removed, the DART flange can be installed. 4

5 First, insert the two pin screws in the keyhole slots on either side of the interface. Insert the pins with the notches on the top and slide them all the way back into the slots. When the pins are fully inserted, rotate them so that the notches point downward, locking the pins in place. 6 Next, take the IonSense VAPUR piece and gently place it over the source region of the AB Sciex instrument. Press it firmly, but gently, until it clicks and rests snugly over the source region. Orient the pumping port downward. Orient downward Remove the Swagelok nut from the fitting in the middle of the plate. Place the graphite ferrule in Swagelok nut and insert the ceramic tube through the nut. Push it in until it comes to a rest against the inside of the flange. Tighten the nut with your fingers (do not use a wrench or the tube will crack) until it can no longer slide in and out of the nut. Figure 5: The VAPUR piece and ceramic tube 6

7 To install the flange piece, orient it so that the keyholes face the MS. Slide the keyholes over the screw pins and then using the red-handled custom driver, attach and tighten the two flange nuts over the nuts on each side of the flange. Figure 6: The flange is shown attached to the AB Sciex instrument. The keyholes are on the MS side and the large circular holes are facing outward. Also, the electronic interlock on the bottom left-hand side of the flange should now be attached to the MS. Figure 7: Use the driver to tighten the two flange nuts to the pin screws. 7

8 Next, take the two alignment pins and screw them into the top right and bottom left holes on the flange piece. The other two holes are used to attach the DART to the flange. Figure 8: Alignment pins screwed into the flange. Figure 9: The DART attached to the AB Sciex
