1 F/A-18 Hornet Instruction Manual (Beta1.1 Manual) We would like to thank you for purchasing our Green Air Designs F/A-18 Hornet and hope you have as much fun building and flying yours as we have ours. 2 Step 1 Nose Construction. Refer to Drawings on page step one for basic build. 1. First build the bottom of the nose making sure the alignment is to the front. Build NB1 though NB3. 2. Using pins and or tape to hold, fit the sides onto the bottom again checking for alignment and straightness. What we are attempting to do here is to build the model into modules for assembly later. It is also a good idea to sand the majority of shapes in when building the modules so less shaping is required later. 2

3 Step 2 Rear Fuse Assembly Refer to drawings on page step 2 for basic build. Our next task is to make up the rear fuse assembly. 1. Dry fit the duct sides, checking for accuracy, these too are front aligned, it does not matter if the rear of the duct sides do not match up. these can be trimmed later. 2. Gently warm the duct sides to get these to naturally conform to the contour of the base. 3. Glue the duct sides onto the base insuring that you have vertical sides! 4. This would be a great time to glue some scrap into the fuse bottom at the outside edged at the intake so you can round them later. Great now you have 2 modules for your F/A-18 Hornet!!!!! 3

4 Step 3 - Wing and taileron shaping & Fore wing shaping. 1. Dry fit ally-box spar into wing, (open up slot as necessary), glue in place making sure whole wing is kept flat during this process, as warps are hard to get out later. 2. Using reference on page Step 3 sand the wing to the marks given to give you a rounded LE and even TE.the washout is produced using the profiles given a kind of Clark YH at root and fully symmetrical at tip. 3. Sand tailerons symmetrically using sanding guides on reference page. 4. Trial fit the wing nose and rear section together, dry fit the front wing part, note the height difference to the wing, gently warm the section to flow into the wing front see pictures for clarity. Note curvature for fitment, 4

5 Step 4 - Fuse top module. Refer to page Step 4 for basic build 1. Dry align the top pieces to measurements given (FT1 & FT2), when happy glue together and leave to set. 2. Glue FT3 through FT6 but do NOT glue to FT1 & FT2 module (this is your access hatch) 3. Fit FTF making sure front aligned then glue to FT1&2 module. (this acts as your hatch stop! 4. Roughly sand to shape, remember to dry fit regularly as so to stop errors when sanding. Now we have a set of modules!!! 5

6 Step 5 Taileron mounts. Control and power module assembly. 1. Refer to pictures for parts. 2. Bore a hole through the spruce block for your taileron wire, with a 2mm drill or the wire itself (with care, best to start from both ends and work into the middle) 6

7 3. Make up the linkage and push through the fuse sides. Epoxy on the 2 plates, large one on the inside. ( see pics) MAKE SURE THAT THE TALERON ARE COMPLETELY HORIZONTAL. Step 5 Cont. 4. Glue in the EDF mounts. 5. Glue on the Servos and align so that you have full movement This would be a great time to connect up the edf units, test and fit with a couple of small spots of hot glue to stop movement. 7

8 8. Using Styrene cups make some inlet ducts and again attach with a couple of spots of hot glue/tape. 9. Using paper or card, make up the 2 outlet pipes with an outlet diameter of 44mm 10. Using picture shown mark and grove tailerons and epoxy into place remembering spacer. AGAIN KEEP EVERTHING HORIZONTAL!!!! Glue on the For wing and curve down. 8

9 Step 6 Main Aircraft assembly. Now that you have a set of modules, its time to put all the bits together to make something resembling your F/A-18 Hornet. It is recommended that you put all the rough shaping into the modules before you assemble them, this just makes the final shaping easier! Right onto the mission! 1. Glue on the wings making sure again that everything is straight!!! 2. Glue together the fuse top as per Drawing. 3. Pre-sand rear fuse so that the shape is correct before rudder fitment. 4. Slide on and glue the fuse rear plate 9

10 6. Glue whole top module down onto fuse once happy that all controls work perfectly as no adjustment can be done after!!. Cut through winglet and clean up hole wide enough for your batteries to be easily fitted and retrieved. Hold down into place using tape. 7. Glue on canopy bottom and canopy, sand to shape. 8. Glue and shape nose laminations and glue to nose. 9. Glue on Canopy and fit hatch. Step 7 Finishing and flying. Set-up Throws. Elevon mixing required. Elevator travel:- 25mm up and 25mm down from centre. As a starting point adjust as required. Aileron travel:- 25mm up and 25mm down from centre. This can be increased a bit when comfortable with flight characteristics. Centre Of Gravity is 40mm from LE at root 10

11 Finishing. We usually use light weight filler (polyfiller, onefill or spackle) watered down with water and slopped on left to dry then sanded to fill all dents and sanding marks. Once to the right smoothness, give the surface 2 coats of 50% watered down PVA and a light sand then paint! We recommend water based acrylics and some enamels..but be careful as some enamels have a high VOC and will eat the foam! We take no responsibility for damage to planes through unsuitable paints used! DO NOT USE CELLULOSE BASED PAINTS!! Hope you enjoy and fly safe! The Green Air Designs Team. 11

12 Nose Construction Diagram Step -1 NOSE CONSTRUCTION AND PARTS NOSE SIDE x 2 Construction notes : NOSE BOTTOM 3 Glue nose bottom 1 to nose bottom 2 sandwiching two carbon toes along the lenght. Glue nose bottom 3 to the top of nose bottom 2. Glue the nose sides to each side of the bottom assembley ( pin the parts together to assure the sides are at 90 degrees). 14 WING AND TAILERON SHAPING PROCEDURE Sand the wing to the dotted lines noting that the dot - dot - dash line on the underside of the wing gives you your washout. See root and tip diagram. Step - 3 Sand the tailerons symmetrically to the dotted lines. WING ROOT WING TIP 14

15 FUSE TOP ASSEMBLEY FUSE TOP ASSEMBLEY fuse top 3 fuse top 5 fuse top4 Step 4 - Fuse top module Assemble parts fuse top 6 to fuse top 3 at the given measurements then sand to give profiles. Assemble fuse top 1 and 2 together these parts align at the trailing edge of the wing. Sand these part in to each other at the rear. Then sand in to where the wing would sit. 16 Step 5 - Trial fit. FUSE FRONT FUSE AND WING ASSEMBLEY Take front and rear fuse asemblies mark a line down the centre of each and glue together making sure the two halves are in line and that the front of the duct is inline with the leading cutout in the front fuse assembley. Warm winglet and gentley bend along axis of fuse so when winglet is fitted to fuse the outer parts meet the top of the leading edge of the wing. Carefuly align winglet and wing on fuse, mark then WINGLET WING REAR FUSE 16

17 Cut canopy to shape and glue in place. Glue rudders in to the slots and pin to 110 degrees with the jig. 17
