2 Why Do I Need a Strain Relief? North merican and international strain reliefs from Panel Components Corporation provide a liquid-tight seal on the power cord entry and, at the same time, provide extra protection to power cords (Figure 1). Strain reliefs extend cord life and reinforce the cord connection to your equipment. The strain reliefs described in this brochure are intended for use in mechanically securing a power supply cord to a piece of electrical equipment in accordance with IEC and other international standards. Where Does a Strain Relief Fit in? ll styles of Interpower TM strain reliefs are threaded, and can be assembled in two different ways. The mounting threads of the strain relief can be threaded directly into the panel of the equipment, or the strain relief can be eased through a clearance hole in the panel and fitted with a locking nut. Obviously, each of these options requires a different sized clearance hole in the equipment panel. Our specification charts and drawings for each style of Interpower TM strain relief found in this section should make it simple to determine the size of the hole that must be made to accommodate the strain relief selected. NPT and PG Thread Types Compared Interpower TM strain reliefs are available in two different types of mounting threads: NPT and PG. NPT (National Pipe Thread) is the merican standard. PG (Panzer Gewinde) is a European standard. PG threading is sometimes referred to as metric threading; however, these threads are not truly metric. There is a metric system of threading that is slowly replacing PG threads, but very Figure 2 PG to NPT adapter few people have actually started using metric threads at this time. t the opposite end of the strain relief body are cme threads which are used to attach the dome nut (see pages 6 7) and flex nut (see page 10). This style of threading is designed to handle pressure under high torque conditions. Most of the items shown in this catalog are available with either NPT or PG threads. The thread system you choose will depend on the location the equipment will be used. Equipment intended for use in North merica should make use of NPT strain reliefs, PG to NPT adapter in use Figure 1 Sealing of Strain Reliefs Dome style strain reliefs (see pages 6 7) named because of their domed shape, are designed to protect the wire entering your equipment. 2

3 and equipment intended for use in Europe should make use of PG threaded strain reliefs. For convenience, Panel Components Corporation also offers a PG to NPT adapter (see Figure 2, page 2). When ordering strain reliefs, consider the following factors: 1) Thread size 2) Cable range (O.D.) 3) Dome or Flex style 4) Metal or Nylon type 5) Color 6) Threaded or knockout If knockout, locking or not 7) Seal ring or O-ring Dome Style Strain Reliefs Dome style strain reliefs, named because of their domed shape, are designed to protect the wire entering the equipment (Figure 3). They help to secure the wire connection to the equipment, and provide longer life to the cord by preventing it from rubbing against a rough or sharp edge where the cord passes through the equipment panel. Interpower TM dome style strain reliefs are available in Nylon 6/6 (polyamide) (see pages 6 7) and nickel-plated brass (see pages 16 17). These dome style strain reliefs are also available with a multi-cable insert and can be designed to accommodate up to eight holes (see pages 14 15). This insert is used when there are two or more cables entering the equipment. We can also help custom design an insert to meet your design needs, but there must be at least 1mm distance between holes. The inserts are made of durable water resistant elastomer. Torque Recommendations for Strain Relief Fittings Torque recommendation values are for reference only. Due to the wide range of material types used in cable jackets and the varying degrees of hardness between material types, torque values for dome or flex nuts will vary depending on the crush resistance of the cable being used. For this reason, Panel Components Corporation recommends that the user determine the actual torque empirically by using the actual cable being used. The torque recommendations are given for the customer to use as a guideline and are not intended for use as a method for specifying parts. Values listed are estimates in Newton meters (N m). Panel Components Corporation is unable to give exact torque values for strain reliefs. 4 Figure 5 90 Strain Relief with Flex Nut Our 90 strain reliefs (see pages 12 13), which can be used with either a flex or dome nut, add strength and support to the cord while adding a 90 snap elbow to minimize wire strain in a bending application. The snap elbow opens to 180 for easy insertion of the wires (Figure 5). This eliminates the possibility of the cord being damaged, which is a contrast to the damage that can result from pulling a cord through a 90 metal strain relief (Figure 5D). fter the cord has been fed through, the strain relief is then snapped closed to 90 providing additional support to the cord and a 10.5 kg/m 2 (kilograms/ square meter) liquid tight seal (Figures 5B & 5C). B C D Figure 6 Straight Strain Relief with Flex Nut Flex style strain reliefs (see page 10) are so named because they offer flexible bend protection to the cord entering the equipment (Figure 6). They are designed to eliminate the possibility of the power cord kinking when the cord is pulled at extreme angles (Figure 6B). The spiral shaped spring wraps around the cord and adds strength to the cord where it is most vulnerable to damage. B 4

5 Flex Style Strain Reliefs Flex style strain reliefs (Figures 5 & 6, page 4) (see page 10) are named because they offer flexible bend protection to the cord entering the equipment. They are designed to eliminate the possibility of the power cord kinking at the point where the cord enters the equipment. The spiral shaped spring wraps around the cord and adds strength to the cord where it is most vulnerable to damage (Figure 6 and 6B, page 4). 90 ngled Strain Reliefs Our 90 angled strain reliefs (Figure 5, page 4) (see pages 12 13) can be used with both a flex or dome nut. They add strength and support to the cord while adding a 90 angled snap elbow to minimize wire strain in a bending application. The snap elbow opens to 180 for easy insertion of the cable, then closes to 90 providing added strain relief and a 10.5kg/m liquid tight seal. Strain Reliefs for Larger Cable For larger cable, we offer aluminum strain reliefs (see pages 18 19) with or without integral flex relief. This type of flex relief features a design similar to that of the old Chinese finger torture devices. s pull on the wire increases, the flex style relief s grip on the cable increases, reinforcing the strength of the connection to the equipment. These strain reliefs are designed to accommodate larger cables ranging from 15.9 to 49.2mm. polyamide nipples feature a ridge that snaps into the grooves of the corrugated conduit to hold the conduit in place. The conduit can be mounted turnable for non-liquid tight applications by pushing the conduit into the fitting until it stops. For rigid, liquid tight applications the conduit should be pushed farther into the fitting until it clicks again. These fittings are available in the nipple version or the 90 angled elbow version style strain relief. ssembling Strain Reliefs Make strain relief assembly simple with Panel Components Corporation s deep socket wrench (see page 22). These tools are made of alloy steel, which makes them handy and light weight. The tools are slit open along the full length of the socket to accommodate the installed cable during tightening of the dome nut and some flex nuts. The deep socket wrench is available in four sizes. Selecting a Strain Relief for pplication The first step in specifying Interpower TM strain reliefs is to determine which general type will work best. For applications requiring small to medium sized cable, we offer the strain reliefs shown on pages The aluminum strain relief types shown on pages offer the best performance for larger cable sizes. Depending on your application, you may wish to specify a strain relief with integral flex relief. The flex relief protects the cord from stress that is applied perpendicular to the axis of its entry into the equipment. The last step is to select the correct size strain relief for the cord with which it will be used (see page for more information on cable). fter installing the cable and the strain relief, the product should be able to pass a pull test. UL calls for the most stringent pull test which consists of a 13.5 kilogram weight fixed to the cable for one minute. fter the one minute is over, a visual inspection is done to determine if the cable has slipped from the strain relief. Figure 7 EMI-shielded Liquid Tight Straight Nickel Plated Brass Strain Relief B When Do I Use Conduit? Panel Components Corporation also offers conduit (see page 21) for use with nipples or elbows. This highly flexible corrugated conduit is made of Nylon 6/6, and is flame retardant and self-extinguishing. It features excellent crush resistance, resistance to heat, UV exposure, and certain chemicals. Wires or cable are threaded through conduit in situations where the wire and cable need extra protection (from elements or physical damage) or where users may need to add additional wires at a later time. The push-in conduit system (see pages 20 21) connects flexible nylon conduit to either a straight or 90 push-in fitting. The The illustration above demonstrates how the strain relief contacts the cable shielding. The strain relief does not come apart. The center section (B) is permanently attached inside the threading of the strain relief (). The illustration, right, shows a cutaway view of the strain relief. Installation of EMI Shielded Strain Relief: Strip outer jacket of cable or cut out 1 cm long piece of the jacket where the strain relief is to be attached. Position the strain relief so that the cable gland is over the outer jacket where the strip or cutout begins. Tighten the strain relief dome nut. s the dome nut is tightened, the cable gland will compress to grip the cable jacket while metal spring fingers compress to make contact with the exposed shield. Tighten strain relief until the metal fingers snugly fit against the shield. This strain relief works well with both foil and braided shield. 5

23 North merican Fillerless Cable The North merican cable below is fillerless and available with North merican or international color coding on the conductors. The advantage of fillerless cable is that jute or paper fillers are replaced by a single Kevlar filament in the ground conductor to provide the required tensile strength of the cable. This eliminates the need to remove the filler when North merican 3-Wire Thermoplastic (PVC) Jacket UL listed, CS certified O.D. the cable is terminated, saving time and eliminating the possibility of assembler injury. Note that fillerless cable is smaller in diameter than conventional cable with similar ratings. Fillerless Cable is available from stock in white, black, gray, tan, yellow, and orange. 28 Terminal Blocks The terminal blocks described in this section are intended specifically for use in making the internal connection between the power cord and the primary circuitry of the equipment. Three-contact terminal blocks provide connection points in single phase applications with contacts for line, neutral, and ground. Five-contact terminal blocks are used in three-phase applications with contacts for three lines, neutral or common, and ground. International power entry connection practices, as outlined in IEC and other international equipment standards, are different from practices commonly observed in North merica and officially sanctioned by UL and CS. International standards require that equipment using permanently attached power cords be constructed such that cords can be disconnected and removed from the equipment without the use of any International terminal block connections Power Cord specialized tools such as soldering irons. Screwdrivers and wrenches are allowed. The theory behind these requirements is that equipment repair is likely to take place at the user location and be performed by personnel who have a limited understanding of the equipment itself. The assumption is that tools and skills may be limited and therefore, the power cord connection process should be simple. The drawing below, left, illustrates an installation that complies with international requirements. The cord enters the product through a strain relief, which can be released by using a wrench. It does not have to be removed from the panel in order to release the cable. Strain reliefs are discussed in the preceding section beginning on page 6. The cord is attached to a terminal block which is constructed so that a screwdriver Terminal Block is the only tool required to connect or disconnect it. Solder-type terminal strips are not permissible. The terminal block must be constructed so that creepage and clearance distances between lines as well as line and ground are maintained. Finally, the insulation construction must prevent contact with current-carrying surfaces in an attempt to eliminate the possibility of accidental shock. This is accomplished on the terminal blocks (illustrated below) by recessing screws and contacts, so that they are screwdriver accessible only. In this case, screwdriver accessibility means that the standard test finger, which is described in international standards, cannot touch current-carrying surfaces when the terminal block is assembled with wires in place. Standard North merican terminal blocks do not satisfy this requirement.
