GENERAL FreezeFree TM Nitro Anti-Icing System GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS The FreezeFree Nitro Anti-Icing System shall be designed and manufactured by Energy Absorption Systems, Inc., of Chicago, Illinois. II. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM A. General The FreezeFree Nitro Anti-Icing System is a solar-charged, batterypowered system that provides anti-icing treatment of a bridge, ramp or other targeted area without external electrical power requirements or telephone communication lines. The FreezeFree Nitro System dispenses a deicing agent by spraying the chemical through a sequence of high-pressure spray nozzles, individually controlled by a series of solenoid valves. Upon activation, deicing chemical is gravity fed on demand to an A.S.M.E. pressure vessel, which is then pressurized with gaseous Nitrogen, regulated to maintain the design operating pressure throughout the system. A programmable logic controller monitors and controls system fluid levels and pressure, and energizes a sequence of solenoid valves to dispense the deicing liquid over the targeted area. The anti-icing cycle can be initiated either by a remote telephone call to a wireless paging device in the controller assembly or by manually pushing a button on the controller operator panel. B. Component Description Pressure Tank Assembly The pressure tank assembly consists of a five-gallon portable pressure vessel constructed of stainless steel with an A.S.M.E. rating of F. The pressure tank assembly is equipped with the following components, fully assembled, leak tested, and mounted on a painted steel platform:?? Piloted, 2-way solenoid valves to supply chemical to the system from the storage tank and to vent system pressure. 1 of 6 May 6, 2003

2 ?? Ball and spring check valves to prevent chemical back flow.?? Single-pole single-throw (SPST) level switch.?? 300 psi pressure gauge.?? 150 psi pressure switch with adjustable pressure range.?? Pneumatic exhaust muffler.?? In-line strainer with union seal and 40 mesh stainless steel screen.?? Brass pipe unions for easy installation and maintenance.?? Brass pipe fittings throughout sealed with hydraulic thread sealant.?? All electrical devices shall be wired with 16 AWG, 2 conductor electrical cable, using insulated, adhesive-lined butt connectors. Piping The pressure piping system shall consist principally of the following components:?? Synthetic rubber (Nitrile) hose used from pressure tank discharge to solenoid valves.?? Brass push-on hose fittings throughout.?? Nylon 11 tubing used from solenoid valves to nozzle assemblies. All electrical wiring and pressure piping shall be enclosed in schedule 40 galvanized steel pipe and liquid-tight conduit with a flexible galvanized steel core and PVC jacket, coupled with galvanized steel pipe fittings. Solenoid Valves Piloted, 2-way solenoid valves shall be employed. These valves shall consist of brass bodies, stainless steel (AISI 430FR, 305 and 302) internal components and Buna-N seals. The coils shall be NEMA 4X rated. All solenoid valves shall be installed in a NEMA 3R electrical enclosure. Electrical Requirements: 11.5W, 12VDC Normal operating range shall be VDC. All valves shall be tested for full pressure performance at a 15 percent under-voltage. 2 of 6 May 6, 2003

3 Storage Tank Assembly The storage tank shall be molded polyethylene with a vented lid. Standard tank capacity is 375 gallons [1420 L]. The storage tank shall be equipped with an adjustable float level switch to detect low fluid level, and a shut-off ball valve for maintenance. Pump House A prefabricated pump house shall be erected at the site. The walls and roof shall be 2 ½ [64mm] thick panels having a reinforced double wall construction. The interior and exterior walls shall be high-impact vinyl. Wall and roof panels may be filled by the customer with Polystyrene pellets or strips of rigid Polystyrene sheeting to achieve an insulation rating of R-8 or greater. The panels shall be coated with an UV inhibitor to resist fading. The roof shall be capable of withstanding 2,000 lbs vertical loading, and the assembled structure shall be capable of withstanding 100-mph wind loading. The double steel doors shall be coated with a primer and have a minimum opening of 72 [1829mm] wide and 69 [1753mm] high. The nominal exterior dimensions of the assembled pump house shall be 7 3 [2.2m] x 9 10 [3.0m]. The maximum roof height shall be 7 2 [2.2m]. Nozzle Assemblies Nozzle assemblies shall be fabricated from nylon, stainless steel and brass. The standard side-mounted nozzle assembly shall be capable of spraying 29 ft [8.8m] when installed [ mm] above grade. The flush-mounted pavement nozzle assembly shall be capable of spraying 28 ft [8.5m] in a radial pattern with an included angle of 108, providing 739 ft 2 [69 m 2 ] spray coverage. Specific nozzle design may be dependent on the width of the area to be treated. Controller Assembly The controller assembly employs a programmable logic controller for system cycling, and a wireless remote control paging device for remote activation. The paging device shall include an external antenna and a DB-25 interface cable for controller communication. All controller components shall be installed in a NEMA 3R electrical enclosure. 3 of 6 May 6, 2003

4 Electrical Requirements: 8 12VDC Pager Specifications: Outputs: (4) Form C relays, (1) Form C latching relay Paging format: POCSAG Paging baud rate: 512 or 1200 Paging frequencies: VHF, UHF, or 930 MHz Input voltage: 110 ma Solar Powered Charging System The solar charging system consists of a single crystal silicon cell photovoltaic module, a constant voltage pulse width modulation (PWM) charge controller, and a deep cycle sealed battery. The system is designed to provide adequate battery charge for four daily activation cycles with 1.5 hours of average daily sunlight in extreme northern climates, and ten days of battery backup. An adjustable aluminum roof mounting rack with stainless steel fasteners is included for installation of the solar panel on the pump house roof. A wiring kit, including sufficient lengths of module wiring, flexible conduit, conduit connectors, fuses and fuse holders is also provided. 5 System Materials The liquid carrying components of the system shall be constructed of the following materials:?? Stainless steel, Brass, Bronze, Buna-N, Polyethylene, Nitrile, Nylon, Teflon, and Polypropylene. III. QUALITY ASSURANCE A qualified Energy Absorption Systems representative shall provide on-site inspection of the system installation, and supervision of system start-up and testing. IV. REQUIREMENTS A. Nitrogen Service Requirements The customer shall provide a minimum of two 250 cf bottles of gaseous Nitrogen with a CGA 580 outlet for installation in the pump house. Service shall be provided by the customer to inspect, maintain, and deliver full bottles when needed. B. Pager Airtime Service Requirements The customer shall provide airtime service for the wireless paging device. C. Deicing Chemical All deicing agents must be compatible with the system materials. Approved deicing liquids include: Sodium Chloride (NaCl), Magnesium Chloride (MgCl2), Calcium Chloride (CaCl2), Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA), and Potassium Acetate (KAc). Use of deicing chemicals that have not been approved by Energy Absorption Systems, Inc. may invalidate the warranty. 5 of 6 May 6, 2003

6 D. Other 1. Rail or deck loading shall be 3.5 lb/ft [5.2 kg/m]. The standard method of attachment to the bridge rail shall consist of a concrete wedge anchoring system spaced at 8-foot [2.4m] intervals. 2. The FreezeFree Nitro Anti-Icing System pump house should be located as close as possible to the beginning of the system, typically within 50 ft [15m]. The storage tank is located within the pump house and must be accessible for filling by a tank truck. A remote fill location can be provided. The storage tank should be sized to provide sufficient deicing liquid for the entire winter season. The default sizing assumption is approximately 50 anti-icing treatments (depending on number of spray nozzles and local icing conditions). 3. Provisions for access under the bridge deck shall be required only if the nozzles are to be located in the bridge deck, if both bridge rails are to be used, or if the piping is to be run under the bridge deck. 4.
