1 Installing/Replacing Antistatic tape on SPINJET 4000 January 2007 Static Charge The friction of two materials rubbing against each other causes static build-up. On SpinJet static build-up can be seen on the media running through the printer and can lead to an ESD (Electro Static Discharge) resulting in unreliable machine operation or data corruption. Furthermore static build-up can cause difficulties in moving media through SpinJet due to media sticking to SpinJet. Humidity Environmental variables such as relative humidity influence the level of electro static charges. When humidity is low, higher static charges will typically be generated. For this reason, static becomes more noticeable in the winter months, in dry climates, and if air-conditioning is used. NOTE: It is recommended to install a humidifier in the same room as the SpinJet installation if the relative humidity is lower than 50 %. Grounding It is important that the media has a proper electrical conductive-grounded path to follow in order to avoid static accumulation of the media and prevent an uncontrolled ESD occurrence from the media to the Spinjet or printer. The media running through SpinJet is discharged through the anti-static tape on the front cover at upper slot (discharge of single-sided jobs and page 2 of double-sided jobs) and an ESD-brush at the lower slot (page 1 of double-sided jobs) in order to prevent uncontrolled ESD. Both anti-static tape and ESDbrush are connected to the metal frame of the SpinJet, which also is connected to the printer through the grounding cable and to the mains earth. NOTE: SpinJet should be connected to earthed mains outlet only. Earthed mains outlet It is essential that the earth terminal in the socket has a sound connection to the mains earth. The earth should be checked at the socket where the SpinJet is connected. Any qualified electrician can do this. The Line-to-Earth voltage must be equal to the Line-to-Neutral voltage. The Neutral-to-Earth voltage must be zero. NOTE: SpinJet service technicians are instructed to make this check at each installation.

Installing/replacing Antistatic tape (P/N 557 0 189) This is a guide on how to install or replace anti-static tape on the front Cover of a SpinJet.

It is therefore important that a good electrical connection between the black surface of the tape and the metal frame of the SpinJet is obtained.

2 Installing/replacing Antistatic tape (P/N ) This is a guide on how to install or replace anti-static tape on the front Cover of a SpinJet. NOTE: The black surface of the tape is conductive and not the adhesive on the tape. It is therefore important that a good electrical connection between the black surface of the tape and the metal frame of the SpinJet is obtained. This is accomplished by bending around a flap on the tape resulting in an area of the conductive black surface of the tape facing the same direction as the adhesive of the tape. The surface of the flap and thereby the hole tape will be earthed when placing the tape on a earthed surface resulting in excellent static discharge of any media in contact with the tape. 1. Remove left and right Cover. Remove the three screws to free the Side Cover. Take great care not too damage the slot! Attention: Use T15 only. 3 screws Figure 1 2. If No anti-static tape has previously been installed: Remove the non-conductive paint in an area of 15 x 15 mm on the right side of Front Cover and 15 mm from the front edge of Front Cover with a sharp tool as shown on Figure 3 and thereby uncover the earthed metal frame of the SpinJet. 15 mm 15x15 mm area Figure 3.

4 3b. Replacing anti-static tape: Remove existing antistatic tape, e.g. with a hot-air blower machine to soften adhesive on tape and ease removal. 4. Remove grease on Front Cover with cleaner's naphtha. Area where nonconductive paint has been removed. Figure Remove some of the tape foil and bend around the flap of the anti-static. Figure 5.

5 6. Orient Antistatic tape with bent flap on right side of SpinJet. Place the tape with front edge aligned with front edge of Front Cover making sure that the surface of the bent flap is in contact with the area on the Front Cover were the paint has been removed.
