2 Background Information Irrigation sprinklers have long been used as a tool to wet lands in order to prevent further spreading of wildfires. Rainbird 70 CWH is an example of one of the current sprinklers. However: Cannot adjust vertically Cannot reach desired throw distances FP Innovations is currently looking for a new design that is versatile and cheap.

3 Design Objective Design a sprinkler system to be utilized in keeping foliage and ground cover damp to assist in forest fighting and prescribed burns efforts.

4 Key Design Specs Horizontal throw minimum 6 meters Vertical throw minimum 7 meters with desired goal of 21 meters Operating pressure of 100 Psi 36 litres/minute for each sprinkler head Rotational throw of a full 360 degrees

5 Conceptual Ideas

6 Concept 1 Fire Cobra 10% flow diverged from tee to the horizontal nozzle to provide force to rotate impact arm 90% of flow diverged to top nozzle. Wing nuts allow for quick and easy adjustment of vertical throw

7 Concept 2 Devil s Horn Rotational force provided by offcentering nozzle Vertical pivot integrated to allow for vertical throw adjustment Rotational damper installed to control rotation speed

8 Concept 3 Ring of Fire Some flow diverged through horizontal nozzle to provided rotational motion The top nut allows for vertical adjustment Gasket placed in the top joint to minimize leakage. Rotation speed adjusted by sizing the horizontal pipe and adjusting the nozzle angle

9 Sprinkler Stake 90 bend welded onto sprinkler mounting surface. Holder is capped so it can be placed on a 2x4, or hammered into the ground. Holes enable the stake to be nailed to a vertical wall.

10 The Verdict The Fire Cobra was selected for further development because: Purchased parts significantly reduce mass production costs Concept is based on standard impact sprinklers The purchased high pressure fittings are very durable

11 Detailed Design Analysis

Critical Design Changes Arms were redesigned using galvanized steel to minimize stress concentrations and maximize durability Both nozzle sizes reduced to increase outlet

12 Critical Design Changes Arms were redesigned using galvanized steel to minimize stress concentrations and maximize durability Both nozzle sizes reduced to increase outlet velocity and meet required flow rates Rotational impact arm modified to enhance rotational performance Brass bushing added to the rotational impact arm for smoother rotation

13 Computational Fluid Dynamics Objective: To determine the flow distribution within the tee. ANSYS CFX was used to determine the velocity profile as well as the ratio of flow rates at each tee outlet.

15 Outlet Velocities Objective: To determine the new nozzle outlet velocities with the flow rate distribution known in the tee. Hand Calculations (m/s) FloXpress (m/s) Top Junction Horizontal Junction Result: Hand calculations agree well with results obtained from FloXpress

16 Bending Stress in Arm Objective: To determine the maximum stress in the arm due to the momentum and pressure forces at the nozzle. Result: Maximum stress is 17.2 MPa. the arms will not fail since the yielding strength of galvanized steel is MPa.

17 Welding Welding analysis was done on the joint between the lower elbow and support stake This is the most critical weld and most likely to fail
