Lubrication System Descriptions (select one only) (LA) individual grease lubrication lines to each sleeve bearing, including Alemite grease fittings located on top of the pump suspension plate. (LB) manually operated centralized grease lubricator with individual lube lines to each bearing. (LA) individual oil lubrication lines to each sleeve bearing, including a manual oiler/reservoir with individual divider valves, mounted on the motor support/thrust bearing housing. 5 SUSPENDED SOLIDSHANDLING WETPIT PUMPS Sleeve Bearing Material Applications Standard Bronze Backed Babbitt Lined (BBBL) ASTM B6 (SAE 40/6) w/astm B (GR/7) The standard bearing for Yeomans vertical suspended wet pit pump applications is a thick bronze shell lined on the inside with a generous layer of highgrade babbitt bearing material. The babbitt provides a softer, lower friction surface. The relative softness of the babbitt will allow any hard particles to become embedded in the babbitt and minimize wear and friction generated at the shaft. The babbitt material has lubricating grooves to allow proper distribution of the bearing lubricant. The bearing is carefully finished to exact tolerances and surface finish for the optimal shaft running clearance and the proper press fit into the bearing housing. The recommended lubricant for this bearing type is grease or oil supplied through one of the listed lubrication systems. The recommended shaft material is steel. Option A Solid Bronze ASTM B6 (SAE 40/6) An optional bearing material is sleeve bearing grade solid bronze. This material is normally only used where hard, gritty materials are not present. Abrasives in the pumpage would typically act to score the inside of the bearing and the running surface of the shaft, affecting the life of both components. The inside of this bearing has lubricating grooves to allow proper distribution of the bearing lubricant. The bearing is carefully finished to exact tolerances and surface finish for the optimal shaft running clearance and the proper press fit into the bearing housing. The recommended lubricant for this bearing type is grease or oil supplied through one of the listed lubrication systems. The recommended shaft material is steel. Option B Solid Block (Carbon/Graphite) This optional bearing material is a solid block of graphite. Graphite is a very low friction surface and does exhibit some selflubricating qualities, which allow the bearing to operate with minimal lubrication for short time periods. Graphite is also impervious to most chemicals and will withstand relatively high temperatures. Graphite bearings are brittle and care in application is necessary to prevent shaft and suspension column misalignment, or shock loading, which can cause premature failure of this bearing type. Graphite is also subject to failure from thermal shock (rapid changes in the temperature of the lubricating liquid). This bearing type is recommended for elevated temperature service (above 40 F) operating in a clear liquid. The bearing is lubricated with the liquid being pumped, or can be lubricated from an outside source of fresh, clear liquid. The bearing is carefully finished to exact tolerances and surface finish for the optimal shaft running clearance and the proper press fit into the bearing housing. The inside of the bearing has lubricating grooves to allow proper distribution of the bearing lubricant. The recommended shaft material is stainless steel. Option C Bronze / Graphite Plugged ASTM B6 (SAE 40/6) w/ Graphite This optional bearing type is a thick bronze shell with graphite cylinders or plugs pressed into holes drilled through the shell. The plugs provide a partial surface of graphite as the bearing material. The graphite provides an excellent low friction surface, while the bronze backing provides a stable surface for the press fit into the bearing housing. The most common application for this bearing type is in elevated temperature (above 40 F), clear liquid applications such as condensate service. The bearing is lubricated with the liquid being pumped, or can be lubricated from an outside source of fresh water. The recommended shaft material is stainless steel. Continued on following page... 6 SUSPENDED SOLIDSHANDLING WETPIT PUMPS Continued from previous page Option D Impregnated Teflon (PTFE) This optional bearing material is a glass filled (impregnated) solid PTFE sleeve. This material is inert to most chemicals, has very low friction characteristics, and is suitable for a wide temperature range (up to 50 F). These properties make this an ideal bearing material for clear hot liquids, chemicals and solvents, and where the pumpage is unknown or attacks other bearing types. The bearing is lubricated with the liquid being pumped, or can be lubricated from an outside source of fresh, clear liquid. The bearing is carefully finished to exact tolerances and surface finish for the optimal shaft running clearance and the proper press fit into the bearing housing. The inside of the bearing has lubricating flutes to allow proper distribution of the bearing lubricant and to flush out any abrasives. The recommended shaft material is stainless steel. Option E Bronze Backed Rubber Lined (BBRL) ASTM B6 (SAE 40/6) w/buna N Option F Stainless Steel Backed Rubber Lined (SSBRL) ASTM A76 (04/6) w/ Buna N This optional bearing type is a thick metal shell with an elastomeric lining. The standard metal is bronze. Various grades of stainless steel, 6 SS being most common, are available for corrosive applications. The standard elastomer is BunaN, alternate elastomers are available dependent on the nature of the liquid. The elastomer has vertical flutes molded into the inside diameter to allow a flushing action to take place as the shaft rotates inside the bearing. This bearing is recommended for applications where abrasives exist in the pumpage. For heavy abrasive applications the bearing is lubricated by the introduction of fresh water into the suspension column at a pressure greater than the pump discharge pressure (recommended GPM per bearing at 50 PSI above discharge pressure). The fresh water acts to flush any abrasives into the pump volute to be pumped from the sump. Alternatively, this bearing type can be supplied with flushing connections from the discharge pipe to the suspension column for light abrasive applications. A stainless steel shaft is recommended for this bearing. Option G Modified Graphite This optional bearing material is graphite dispersed in a matrix composed of some other material, typically bronze, copper, babbitt, or nickel. The bearing is designed for clear liquids utilizing the low friction characteristics of the graphite. The matrix material is chosen to address any corrosives present in the pumped fluid. The matrix design is utilized to compensate for the brittleness and thermal sensitivity of solid carbon graphite. The bearing is lubricated with the liquid being pumped, or can be lubricated from an outside source of fresh, clear liquid. The bearing is carefully finished to exact tolerances and surface finish for the optimal shaft running clearance and the proper press fit into the bearing housing. The inside of the bearing has lubricating grooves to allow proper distribution of the bearing lubricant. The recommended shaft material is stainless steel. PAGE E004B ISSUE /05

7 SUSPENDED SOLIDSHANDLING WETPIT PUMPS MATERIAL SELECTION Useful operating life of pumping equipment is affected by a wide variety of conditions. Some, such as abrasion, corrosion and cavitation can be well managed with study of the individual pump application to properly identify the pump system process. By understanding the major process components, significant operating life can be added to the equipment reducing operating and overall maintenance costs for extended life of the equipment. Major wear considerations in properly applying pump equipment are: Sequence of operation Fluid (pumped) characteristics Corrosive Abrasive Temperature Hydraulic design or duty point NPSH available versus required of the pump hydraulic design Sequence of operation is dependent upon the work demanded of the equipment and is important in considering equipment designed for intermittent or continuous duty. Typically, wastewater pumps are assumed to be used in intermittent service which in itself can challenge the mechanical durability of the design due to numerous starts and stops. Properly sizing a pump for peak and normal hydraulic demands is critical. Corrosive characteristics of fluids must be identified for proper material selection of pump components. Sump drainage or sewage wastewater typically are neutral and standard ASTM A48 Class 0 cast iron is more than adequate. However, should any corrosive components be identified, even for very short periods of time such as cleaning or washdown activities, serious consideration must be given to material selection. The following material selection chart can be used for a general guide to material selection of wastewater pumps based on the fluid ph. The extreme ph value of the fluid to be pumped should be used. Abrasive particles such as grit, sand, metals, rock, coal dust or slag can cut or grind soft metals to prematurely wear major components. Combined with corrosive liquids, abrasives in fluids demand higher cost metallurgy solutions. Most applications can be satisfied with the use of harder materials than the standard cast iron such as a hardenable closed grained iron or NiHard ( BHN). Some martensitic stainless steels are used as they can be hardened from their natural as cast state and are suitable for resistance to corrosion. CD4MCu (ASTM A744/A744M) is another excellent material for corrosion and abrasion resistance and should be considered for the most difficult of pump applications. High temperature (above 0 F) is of particular concern especially in the application of lubricants to the operating equipment. When pumping warm or hot fluids, check with your Yeomans Application specialist and review the effects of temperature on the hydraulic performance and lubrication systems. Duty point and NPSHR for the pump chosen is always critical in the final pump application. Appropriate selection directly affects equipment mechanical life and balance of loads imposed on the rotating elements and should always be pursued in the goal of good pump application.
