4 Precision Pressure & Flow Controllers Kelly Pneumatics, Inc. offers reduced cost, proportional valve design Precision Pressure and Flow Controllers with PID control circuitry. Using either an externally supplied dynamic/static input signal or an onboard adjustable set-point value, these products provide exceptional closed-loop, proportional, output pressure control characteristics. By utilizing precision, proportional valve technology, each Precision Pressure and Flow Controller performs with excellent resolution and consistency. The Precision Pressure and Flow Controller product line consists of two catagories: pressure regulators and a pressure relief valve. Kelly Pneumatics offers three distinct Electronic Precision Regulators for high, medium, and low flow pressure control applications. All versions can replace manual regulators or discreet component systems when more precise regulation is required, offering significant improvements over traditional dual on/off valve electronic regulators that cause substantial shock waves in the regulated pressure signal. Kelly Pneumatics also offers an Electronic Relief Valve for high volume relief flow for precise chamber pressure control. All Kelly Pneumatics Precision Pressure and Flow Controllers can be used with the RS232 Converter Board for high resolution pressure control via a computer or micro-processor. (Reference the Accessories section for more details on page 30) Proportional Regulator Design Meets Control System Challenges. Kelly Pneumatics Inc. has developed a electronically controlled proportional pressure regulator using patented proportional valve technology. The proportional pressure regulator is a closed loop control unit that incorporates two proportional valves, a manifold, and control circuitry including a pressure sensor and electronic circuit. Traditional electronic pressure regulators typically employ a dual on/off valve design, with both an inlet and exhaust valve: changes in pressure are controlled by cycling the on/off valves to open and close via Pulse Width Modulation, which can be problematic. Problems associated with the Pulse Width Modulation of on/off valves include: a much shorter life of the product due to frequent valve cycling, product noise, control circuitry dead-band, pressure output oscillation, as well as less consistent performance during steady states. 5 Precision Pressure & Flow Controllers Other pressure regulator units available on the market incorporate an inlet proportional valve to compensate for these performance issues. However, these units typically incorporate a single on/off solenoid exhaust valve to vent excess pressure and compensate for changing flow rates to the system. Typically, this is achieved with rapid valve cycling, so applications with dynamic performance rates will suffer most, as the exhaust valve must continually cycle at a particular hertz to compensate for the dynamic changes in performance. regulation. Outlet flow is acquired by proportionally moving the single valve armature away from the valve inlet orifice (Fig 1.1). The total travel distance of the valve armature is inches. One valve controls the inlet and the other the exhaust; both valves proportionally increase or decrease the output pressure, respectively. A product cross sectional is shown below in Diagram 1.1. Diagram 1.1 Conversely, On/Off valves do not typically offer variable flow rates and use a armature with a singular calibrated travel distance - the valve armature during Off states is completely closed against the valve seat, while during On states is completely opened against the valve housing (Fig 1.2). Therefore, the total travel distance of the armature for one complete On-to-Off cycle is double that of the maximum allowable travel distance of the valve armature. This is mostly due to the inherent design of the proportional valves that control the pressure (949)

6 Precision Pressure & Flow Controllers Life Cycle Comparison - Graph 1.1 On/Off valve cycling can be problematic when considering the aforementioned use of pulse width modulation in other pressure control units that must cycle the On/Off valves at a particular hertz, which can substantially lessen the life of the solenoid valves being cycled and subsequently the product itself. This is especially true of applications with consistent outlet flow and/or frequently changing output pressures to the system, when valve cycling is more consistent. Therefore, in many applications valve cycling can be constant for these products, severely limiting product life. In contrast, the Kelly Pneumatics pressure regulator design ensures greater product life: during use, the internal proportional valves need only change their respective armature distance to effectively change the output pressure and flow of the pressure controller. For example, when an increase of flow occurs downstream into the system, both valves are immediately controlled to proportionally compensate by adjusting their respective valve armature distance in a single movement. Additionally, during steady states the proportional valves maintain the valve armature distance, with no wear to the valves themselves. (See Graph 1.1). Another advantage to the dual proportional design is a linear pressure output during either constant or dynamic flow output to the system. In such instances pulse width modulation would be a constant within dual on/off valve regulators designs, which results in oscillation of the output pressure. For example, with a constant outlet flow to the system downstream the traditional two-valve I/P s must modulate both the inlet and exhaust valves, with the inlet valve continually compensating for the exhaust valve fluctuation, and vice-versa, which can result in oscillating outlet pressure and flow rates. However, the Kelly Pneumatics dual proportional design avoids this by slightly adjusting both valves proportionally, which maintains the desired flow output and linear pressure output (Graph 1.2). 13 Pressure Regulator Applications Automated Pressure Control Liquid Height Control Applications Steady State Changing State Precision Flow Control Leak Testing The linear performance of the pressure regulator can be converted to near linear flow rates. The incorporation of an adjustable precision orifice on the downstream side of the accurately controlled pressure results in highly repeatable, accurate performance characteristics. The precision flow becomes a function of the controlled pressure and orifice size, thereby adjusting the orifice quickly creates varying flow rates. This design is a cost effective alternative to mass flow controller systems. Accurate leakage testing is accomplished using a non-relieving pressure regulator. First, the regulator pressurizes the article under test until the desired pressure is reached. Next, the input voltage to the regulator is set to zero volts; due to the non -relieving design, the regulator holds the desired pressure within the system. Now, an accurate reading of the pressure within the system is sentas a voltage via the regulator s feedback signal. This feedback signal allows an immediate, accurate reading of the drop in pressure within the system since the time when the input voltage was set to zero. (949)
