2 Description The mini-siren is a compact unit designed with built in siren and light control. The touch pad control panel makes it easy to use. The 9 outputs provide flexibility for desired configurations. With its small size and optional remote control, the Mini-siren takes up little space and is easy to install. Unpacking Before beginning any installation, unpack the equipment received. After unpacking, examine all components received for any damage that may have occurred while in transit. If any damage has occurred, file a claim immediately with the courier stating the extent of damage. Check all envelopes, packing slips, shipping labels and tags before removing or destroying them. To ensure your satisfaction, open all cartons and report any shortages within 48 hours of receipt. WARNING The D&R Electronics Mini-siren is an advanced microprocessor based system. Serious malfunctions and/or improper operation will result if the installation procedures are not followed. Refer to any accompanying diagrams and pay particular attention to WARN- INGS and CAUTIONS listed in this document. Follow instructions exactly as shown and where so indicated. Sound Hazards Your hearing and that of others, in or near your emergency vehicle could be affected by the loud sounds generated. Damage could result because of short-term exposure to moderately loud sounds. Each jurisdiction (country, province/state, etc.) can have specific recommendations governing exposure to sound. Your employer is one source to obtain information regarding this subject. Safety Installer Qualifications For proper installation of this product: you must have a good understanding of automotive electrical systems and procedures, as well as proficiency in installation and servicing of emergency vehicle sound, lighting and warning equipment. Installation During Installation DO NOT connect this system to vehicle battery until ALL other electrical connections have been COMPLETED, and you have checked that no short exists. If using non-d&r Electronics components, such as speaker or siren amplifier, be sure that they have compatible wattage ratings. All speakers should be installed in a location that will produce minimum sound levels inside the vehicle, while maximizing the signaling effectiveness. Part#: Aug. 25, 2009

3 Objects in front of the speaker(s) can severely reduce the sound output. To maximize sound output, ensure that there are no obstructions in front of the speaker(s). Position the control unit so that the vehicle, controls and microphone can be operated safely. High current conductors (wiring) short-circuiting to the vehicle frame can cause sparks which could result in electrical fires or flying molten metal. DO NOT route wiring or install any equipment in the deployment path of an air bag. A proper ground connection between the system and the vehicle chassis ground must be made in order for the system to function properly. FOLLOW installation instructions regarding grounding. After installation Test the completely installed system to ensure that it is operating properly. Test normal vehicle functions, including horn and light systems to ensure that they operate as in a normal vehicle. These instructions should be kept in a safe place and referred to when servicing and/or reinstalling the product. Mounting The Mini-siren comes in two (2) standard configurations, as one compact unit with the touchpad mounted on the front of the Mini-siren, the other as a two-piece kit with the touchpad as a separate remote unit from the Mini-siren. If your Mini-siren is configured as one compact unit, the unit must be mounted in a location safe and easy for the user to access while operating the vehicle. If your Mini-siren is configured as a two-piece kit, the touchpad must be mounted in an easily accessible and safe location, but the main unit can be mounted in the trunk or some other safe out-of-the-way location. When mounting, ensure the unit is secure and will not come loose in the case of a collision. The Mini-siren may come with a variety of mounting brackets. Choose the bracket that best secures the Mini-siren in the desired mounting location. Wiring Instructions Plan all cable lengths and routing with care. Ensure that sufficient cable is left on each end to allow for cable slack. This allows for easy removal of components for maintenance and repair. Do not connect power to the Mini-siren until the wiring layout and connections have been verified and checked for possible shorts. Cable routing can be an important factor in radio transmission interference. Radio signal cabling and power cabling should be kept separate. If a cable harness is used, ensure that the harness is handled with care during installation to prevent any damage to the individual wires within the harness. Part# Aug. 25, 2009

4 Figure 1 RDS - Siren Rear Panel wiring connection points GND The ground terminal should be connected to the negative terminal of the battery or vehicle chassis using a black 8 gauge wire. When connecting the ground wire, ensure that it is physically secured to the chassis or battery terminal. Ensure the electrical connection is not obstructed by paint on the chassis. Never run two ground cables for one ground connection, thus creating a ground loop. 12V This is the main power connection and should be connected to the positive terminal of the battery using an 8 gauge wire. A fuse or circuit breaker should be installed on this wire in a location as close to the battery as possible. Outputs 1 to 3 (+12V outputs) These 3 outputs can be used to control light modules or other devices. These outputs are controlled by the slide switch. High power loads can be connected to these outputs as they have a higher output current rating than other outputs (see specifications). Outputs 4 to 8 (+12V outputs) These outputs can be used to control light modules or other devices. These outputs are controlled by the pushbuttons SW7 to SW12 on the touchpad. Output 9 (Relay Contact output) Output 9 has three (3) terminals. The terminals are N.O. (Normally Open), N.C. (Normally Closed), and COM (common)., output 9 is activated via SW12 on the touch pad. MIC Microphone input. Part#: Aug. 25, 2009

5 Volume - On the backside of the Mini-siren unit there are two (2) variable resistors labeled: MICR and RADIO. These are used to adjust the volume of the microphone and the radio respectively. To adjust the volume, use a precision screw driver to rotate the plastic screw-head in the appropriate variable resistor. Clock-wise will decrease volume and counter-clock-wise will increase volume. P. KILL Park Kill input is activated automatically when the vehicle is shifted into park. Park Kill activation immediately disables all siren tones. Connect the P. KILL pin to the vehicle transmission neutral safety switch signal wire. This wire should output 0V when the vehicle is shifted into park. IGN Ignition input should be connected to the vehicle ignition signal that outputs 12V only when the ignition is ON. RADIO Connect the two (2) RADIO pins to either side of the two-way radio speaker in the vehicle. This is for the Radio Rebroadcast feature, any incoming radio signal is sent to the PA system. SPK Speaker output pins to be connected to a DRSC100 or compatible speaker. H. RING Horn Ring input to be connected to the horn ring relay output in the vehicle. Horn ring relay outputs 12V when vehicle horn button in pushed to activate horn. HORN Horn output to be connected to the horn of the vehicle (existing connection in vehicle from horn ring relay to horn must be cut). DATA COMM. - This data connection is for the arrow stick or light bar controller, this sends the control signals for arrow direction and other commands from the touch pad. Figure 2 - RDS Touch Panel without Arrow Stick Remote Touchpad (IF EQUIPPED) The RDS-RK (remote keypad model), allows for the installation of the RDS mini-siren in an alternate location. This is useful when the space in a vehicle s console does not permit the mounting of the whole siren and touch pad combination. The layout and factory defaults are the same for both console and remote mount RDS as shown in Figure 2 this identical to Figure 3 RDS Touch pad with arrow-stick control. Part# Aug. 25, 2009
