4 How To Safely Operate Tester The 12/24 volt trailer, caravan electrical tow plug and light tester is build with the intention to be portable, whether you are at your workshop or on site, just keep the battery charged. The tester battery can be recharged when voltage goes below volts and is in fully charged state when voltage is above volts. For tester protection, 7.5 ampere fuses are recommended. Use the large toggle switch to select the power options of tester. When switching the large toggle switch to the left side, the twelve volt battery of tester and its circuit is then switched on and will supply power. When switching the toggle switch to the right side it activates the circuit to use a DC twelve volt or twenty four volt external battery or any other external DC 12/24 volt supply. When switching the toggle switch to the centre, it will disconnect all circuits and switch off the tester. Tester fuse will burn through when overloading or a short occur. Overloading happens when current races near the rated current of fuse in a short period of time until the fuse overheat and burn through. By switching on all circuits of tester will induce overloading. Short happens when opposite polarities comes to contact with each other. Towing plugs not connected accordance to SABS standards and burned through wires causes shorts. The voltmeter on tester will drop rapidly just before the fuse blow when in a short stage.! When there is a short somewhere, switch off tester and find the origin of the short and fix it, then continue testing. Indicators on the tester: Left Side Of Tester VOLTMETER Indicates tester is powered on and ready. It also show the voltage reading connected to tester. Middle Side Of Tester LARGE LED Indicates toggle activity. Right Side Of Tester SMALL BI-COLOUR LED Indicates if there is a positive or negative source connected on the auxiliary wire. Read more on auxiliary test. CAUTION: The tester is designed to handle a maximum of 15 ampere. Don't insert fuses rated more than 10 ampere, as the tester's electrical components may get damaged. Tester not water proof. Keep away from water, oil, petrol and other liquids!! 4

5 Operating Instructions for charger: 1. This charger is specially designed for charging lead acid batteries. 2. Plug the charger into a standard household AC outlet. The charging starts and indicator will light up GREEN. 3. The indicator will go RED if battery needs charging. 4. When the battery is charged, the charger will switch to trickle charge automatically. The charging indicator will go back to GREEN. 5. When you finish recharging, disconnect the unit from AC outlet. Then disconnect the charger plug / jack from tester. NEVER DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CONNECTOR BY PULLING ON THE WIRES. 6. Once the charger is disconnected from AC outlet or the battery is disconnected from the charger, it will reset automatically and charging can be repeated immediately following the above steps. 7. Charging circuit protection (fuse holder) is located next to the charging jack on the front side of tester box. Do not insert fuses rated more than five ampere!! CAUTION: This charger is intended for use with 12V 7AH lead acid batteries only. Charging other types may cause personal injury and damage to the charger.! Do not use tester while battery is in charging process as it will damage the tester and charger! 5

7 Testing tow plug, wiring circuit and light bulbs of trailer or caravan When using the tester internal battery to test lights Insert the tow plug of trailer/caravan into the tow socket of tester. Switch the large toggle switch of tester to the left side, The voltmeter will indicate that power is available. Start with testing. When using an external twelve volt or twenty four volt supply or battery to test lights Insert male plug of trailer/caravan into the female socket of tester. Switch the large toggle switch of tester to the right side and connect the tester to any external DC 12/24 volt supply. Positive (red) and negative (black). The voltmeter on tester will indicate that power is available. Start with testing. - EARTH TEST N/A Constant earth will be supplied to the trailer or caravan your testing. - STOP LIGHT TEST Switch the stop light toggle switch of tester to the ON position Both left and right hand stop lights of trailer/caravan must work. If stop lights work, then the circuit is OK. Switch toggle switch OFF and continue to next test. If circuit fails test, then check for the following faults Trailer/caravan tow plug and lights not wired in accordance to S A B S standards. Blown globes. Globes wrongly fitted (check all globes). Bad or dirty contact points. Dead/broken positive wire (red) from trailer/caravan tow plug to stop lights. Earth wire (white) from trailer/caravan tow plug to lights is dead/broken or not making full contact at globe holder/s negative side. Use probe tester to diagnose faults. R/H TAIL LIGHT TEST Switch the R/ H tail light toggle switch of tester to the ON position The tail light on the RIGHT hand side must work. If right hand tail light works, then the circuit is OK. Switch toggle switch OFF and continue to next test. If circuit fails test, then check for the following faults Trailer/caravan tow plug and lights not wired in accordance to S A B S standards. Blown globes. Globes wrongly fitted (check all globes). Bad or dirty contact points. Dead/broken positive wire (red) from trailer/caravan tow plug to stop lights. Earth wire (white) from trailer/caravan tow plug to lights is dead/broken or not making full contact at globe holder/s negative side. Use probe tester to diagnose faults. 7

8 L /H TAIL LIGHT TEST Switch the L/ H tail light toggle switch of tester to the ON position The tail light on the LEFT hand side must work. If left hand tail light works, then the circuit is OK. Switch toggle switch OFF and continue to next test. If circuit fails test, then check for the following faults Trailer/caravan tow plug and lights not wired in accordance to S A B S standards. Blown globes. Globes wrongly fitted (check all globes). Bad or dirty contact points. Dead/broken positive wire (red) from trailer/caravan tow plug to stop lights. Earth wire (white) from trailer/caravan tow plug to lights is dead/broken or not making full contact at globe holder/s negative side. 9 - AUXILIARY CONNECTION TEST If any power is connected to the auxiliary wire the LED (auxiliary) on the tester will either go red for positive or green for negative. By standard this wire is not used and LED should not illuminate. If it does, check for what reason.
