3 INTRODUCTION This guide is intended to provide information to enable qualified technicians to install, operate, and maintain Model 600 Pinch Valves. It contains specific information intended to be used for reference purposes when installing, operating, and maintaining Acro valves. Reference to specific documentation should be made when determining product suitability for an application or system. TERMS & ABBREVIATIONS CE: Conformité Européenne; also known as European Conformity required certification for certain products sold within the European Economic Area. Dual-Acting (D/A): valve without a spring return to default state; requires air pressure Durometer: flexible tubing material hardness; typically referring to Shore-A scale Fail-Safe State: the state valve will return to in the event of a loss of power. I.D.: inner diameter (referring to flexible tubing) MTBF: Mean Time Between Failures Normally-Closed (N/C): valve with a fail-safe state of closed; if power to the valve fails or is turned off, valve will seal the tubing stopping flow. Normally-Open (N/O): valve with a fail-safe state of open; if power to the valve fails or is turned off, valve will release the sealed tube allowing flow. NPT: National Pipe Thread Taper O.D.: outer diameter (referring to flexible tubing) Pinch Force: approximate linear force applied when valve closed. Pinch Gap: distance between opposing pinch surfaces at closed position of valve. Pinch Valve: a device designed to pinch and release flexible tubing. RoHS: European directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances. Stroke: distance valve plunger travels between closed and open states. Total Opening: distance between opposing pinch surfaces at open position of valve. 3

4 PRODUCT LABELING Acro Pneumatic Pinch Valves are labeled with a product code. The first five characters describe the model size, normal state, and sensing options. The second five describe the tube slot configuration, body material of construction, and spring return force. 6 MEET THE PRODUCTS NORMALLY CLOSED NORMALLY CLOSED W/ SWITCH NORMALLY OPEN NORMALLY OPEN W/ SWITCH UNPACKING AND STORAGE Carefully unpack product from shipping container. Before installing the product, ensure all packaging material has been removed from the pinch valve. Inspect the packaging for any signs of potential damage to the product as a result of mishandling during shipment. Visually inspect the product for any damage prior to installing the product in a system. If the valve is to be stored prior to installation and use, re-pack the valve in its original packaging, re-seal box(es) and store in a dry, covered environment. 6

7 SAFETY Fail-Safe Operation Every Acro Pinch Valve is designed to meet the Fail-Safe mode defined by the application. Pneumatic Pinch valves can be configured with Normally-Closed (N/C), Normally-Open (N/O), or Dual-Acting (D/A) air cylinders. Crush Hazard Acro Pinch Valves are designed to pinch and seal flexible tubing. Pneumatic pinch valves are high force clamp devices. During operation keep fingers clear of pinch points. Valve may close unexpectedly. LIMITS OF USE Acro Pneumatic Pinch Valves have been tested and verified to comply with specific operational limits. In order to achieve optimum product performance and maintain safe operation, products must be operated within the operating limits. Operation outside these limits can results in performance degradation, damage to the product, or harm to the user. See Product Drawings/Specifications at the end of this guide for operational limits. Temperature Operating the product in an environment outside the recommended temperature range is not recommended and may result in damage to the product and reduce useful life of the product. Flooding and Water Immersion These products are not designed to operate immersed in water. The product has an IP rating overall and is designed to withstand wash-down on the front end of the panel only. Liquid ingress into the pneumatic cylinder may degrade performance and reduce useful life of the product. Condensation Minor surface condensation may not pose an issue to the product. However, condensation should be limited to the front of the panel and should not be allowed to migrate to the pneumatic cylinder. Fluid ingress into the cylinder may degrade performance and reduce useful life of the product. Corrosive Liquids Corrosive liquids may eventually cause seal failures and reduce the useful life of the product. Any corrosive liquids should be removed from the surface of the product immediately. See the Maintenance section for more information on proper cleaning of product. Tube Set Lifetime These products are designed for use with soft, flexible tubing. Tubing will wear over time and require replacement. The number of useful cycles on any given tube set must be evaluated prior to use in a system. Regular service of the tube set will reduce risk of tube rupture, potential product and/or system damage. 7

8 INSTALLATION & PREPARATION Acro Pinch Valves are designed to be installed in or on an equipment panel. Prior to installation, verify all packaging material has been removed from the product and the mounting surface is clean and free of debris. MOUNTING Each Model 600 pinch valve comes standard with two panel mount screw holes and a panel mount gasket as well as a rod mount hole for off-panel mounting. The Model 600 is intended to be panel mounted using two #6-32 screws or rod mounted with a ¼-20 threaded rod. 2x #6-32 Mounting Holes ¼-20 Rod Mount 8

9 MOUNTING Below is an example of a 1/4 thick panel. Mounting holes on model 600 have at least 1/4 of thread engagement. It is important to take thread engagement and panel thickness into account when sizing mounting screws for your model 600. The chart below displays several standard screw sizes and their corresponding panel thickness for use with the model 600. 10 MOUNTING The panel through hole should be sized appropriately to fully encompass the mounting seal. Gasket I.D. Gasket O.D. The mounting gasket is made from 50 Shore A durometer Silicone VMQ. It is designed to be a compressible seal for panel mounting. It is important not to over-compress the seal when installing the Acro Model 600 pinch valve. When installing the pinch valve on a panel, use 5 in-lbs torque maximum. 10

Allow reasonable space around product for installation and access to mounting screws and fittings. DOC. 12 FITTINGS Model 600 Pinch Valves are designed with a 1/8 NPT air supply port on the front OD portion of the cylinder or rear cap of the cylinder depending on the default state of the product. Each valve is shipped with a plug in the 1/8 NPT port that must be removed prior to fitting installation. Contact Acro for a full list of Model 600 compatible fittings to best suit your application. Fittings are available in straight or elbow configurations and in composite, plated-brass, or stainless steel materials. 12

13 FITTINGS NOTE: Due to the nature of the model 600 s assembly, the alignment of the valve s cylinder to mounting holes will vary from valve to valve. It is important to leave enough room around the cylinder for installation and maintenance. As shown below, fitting orientation will vary within 360 degrees from valve to valve. 13

14 PLUMBING & AIR PREPARATION Acro Pneumatic Pinch Valves require a 3-Way Pressure Venting Control Valve for proper operation. Ensure all fittings and air lines are secure. Air supply should be clean, dry air. Use of a water separator and filter may be required to properly prepare inlet air. For panel mount applications, the valve will need to be installed onto the panel prior to fitting installation and plumbing. NORMALLY CLOSED PLUMBING NORMALLY OPEN PLUMBING 14

15 SWITCH OPERATION & HOOK UP Switches can only be used on certain cylinder configurations. If your Acro pinch valve is configured with a switch track, the valve is prepared to accept a state feedback switch. Switch Track The switch is designed to fit securely in an exterior mounted switch track. The switch is integrated into a 4mm switch package. 15

16 SWITCH OPERATION & HOOK UP The switch is positioned approximately 1/2 inch from the top of the switch track on Normally-Closed valves and 5/8 inch from the top of the track on Normally-Open valves. Our P8925 switch for the model 600 is configured for NPN (sinking) output. See switch technical data sheet for further electrical specifications. See below for the switch hook up and specification information required to properly integrate state feedback into your system. 17 PINCH GAP ADJUSTABLE PINCH GAP The model 600 is Acro s first adjustable gap pinch valve. Using the pinch gap adjustment set screw and jam nut on top of the tube slot cover, the model 600 can be adjusted to accept a wide variety of tubing, ranging in size from 1/8 O.D. to 3/8 O.D. Follow the three steps below to adjust your valve s pinch gap. 1. Loosen jam nut. 2. Adjust set screw to set gap (see chart below). 3. Tighten jam nut. In the event the pinch gap needs to be re-adjusted to factory settings, below is a chart with factory recommended specifications. 19 TUBING & MAINTENANCE Model 600 is designed for safe and easy tube loading and secure tubing retention. Refer to the component table and exploded image shown in Cleaning/Materials of Construction section of this document during the following instructions. For tube loading you will need to remove the front cover. The cover is retained by two button head cap screws. Using a 1/16 Allen wrench (or torque driver) loosen the two screws approximately a ¼ turn. This will free the cover for removal. Using the two finger recesses on main diameter of cover, twist the cover counterclockwise until the screw heads are aligned with clearance holes and pull straight out. Once cover is removed you are ready to install tubing. NOTE: if you are performing a tube replacement, inspect the tube slot area. Make sure it is clean and free of any debris. Extended cycling and pinching of harder tube materials may result in minor shedding of tube surfaces. For cleaning instructions see Cleaning section of this document. Install new tubing into slot by aligning tube length parallel with slot groove. Push tube down to bottom of groove. Next you will install cover. Cover assembly has several components that should be inspected prior to reinstallation. Make sure front jam nut and set screw are securely tightened and not loose. If they are loose see Pinch Gap Adjustment for instructions. Turn cover over and inspect bottom counter bore and moving pinch ridge. Make sure they are clean and free of debris. Moving Pinch Ridge is free to rotate and needs to be aligned (or clocked) with slot in front face of body. Prior to installing cover rotate blade of Pinch Ridge by hand to orient blade with cover screw holes. Slowly install cover assembly onto body by first guiding pinch ridge blade into alignment/clocking slot in body. Pinch Ridge parallel faces must be perpendicular to tube slot. While keeping the pinch ridge engaged in body slot rotate cover until screw clearance holes are aligned with two button head screws. Push cover over screws and rotate clockwise until cover stops on screws. Firmly tighten (3-inch lbs) cover screws with a 1/16 Allen wrench. Take care not to over tighten screws. INSPECTION & MAINTENANCE The Acro Model 600 pinch valve is designed for long life with minimal service requirements. However, it is important to perform regularly scheduled maintenance. It is the responsibility of the OEM or end user to define inspection and maintenance intervals that meet the requirement of the specific application. 19

20 CLEANING The interface end (head) of the Acro Model 600 is designed to be fully cleanable. The valve body, pinch head, and cover can be removed for easy cleaning. It is the responsibility of the OEM or end user to properly define the cleaning process for their system. It is imperative to clean with material compatible solutions and solvents to avoid product performance degradation and potentially product failure. See the MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION section for a list of component materials.
