2 Evolution When Pleiad was created the concept was unique; the first downlight family where a broad range of models and functions were united in a common style. Pleiad met the need at a time where the characteristics of buildings design changed there was less space, more technology and demands for lighting which accentuated the architecture. The ability to create lighting designs with extensive variations on method and function became an experience for many. Now is the time for Pleiad Generation 2. This time we have met the market's demands for installation and operational economy, energy efficiency and environmental concern. Staying true to the original principles, Pleiad has been developed and refined to create an extremely effective downlight with optimal control. A new design and new materials have made Pleiad more elegant and lighter. The most striking is the diversity. Today, Pleiad forms a complete family of downlights with variants for all imaginable applications and types of light sources. 6 Create your vision Aesthetical considerations frequently lie behind the reasons for using downlights. The recessed luminaire emphasizes the architecture without intruding while the spots of light create a pleasant star like effect in the room. Pleiad G2 has a discreet design with a reflector ring that blends into the ceiling with a virtually invisible joint. The solid materials and careful finishing combine, giving the effect that the luminaire and ceiling are one. However lighting is visual in more than one way. With the starting point in Pleiad s basic design, then you can build your own vision with light, form and colour. 6

8 Accessorise the light The Pleiad family s accessories give you scope to create with material, colour, aspects and effects. The accessories follow several different design paths: from clean lines in matt glass and metal, to expressionistic colour curves, all are decorative, but usually functional too. Rings with light reflecting properties heighten the contrasts between the luminaire and ceiling while the different louvers increase the cut-off angle. Practical accessories give higher IP-classification with protection against dust and moisture. It is also possible to equip your Pleiad with a micro-prism, a clear plastic disc that diffuses the light equally and effectively. The accessories are developed for Pleiad s two base models, Pleiad SLD G2 and Pleiad Compact G2, and are easily fitted in connection with the installation. The most common is assembly directly on the ring via a bayonet fitting or the accessory is suspended on the reflector. It is also possible to add, or replace accessories at a later date, so when it s time to redecorate, Pleiad can easily be adapted to the new concept. 8

9 Trend, Plane, Ice Trend, Plane and Ice are three decorative options integrated into the luminaire during manufacture. All are based on the Pleiad family's premium alternative, Pleiad SLD G2, and are equipped with SLD reflector technology. Pleiad Trend G2 has a polished, lacquered aluminium ring and is also available with a blasted glass cover that filters the light. Pleiad Plane G2, in brushed aluminium, has a clear spacer against the ceiling, which sets off the luminaire's structure and form. One variant of Plane is equipped with a LED as an illuminated accent a luminaire in a luminaire. Pleiad Ice G2 is a contemporary cut-glass chandelier with a ring of solid glass. 9

11 Make room for a new generation Advanced reflector surfaces for rotational symmetry (SLD) Half the weight New materials and minimal dimensions have produced a downlight that weighs less and is easy-to-handle. Installed in seconds and supplied with fitted light source and plug, the assembly spring permits the luminaire to easily drop into place. Practical dust protection The protective foil is removed after final installation and cleaning, ensuring you start with a clean reflectors that performs with maximum efficiency. Front assembly spring % greater efficiency Pleiad G2 features a refined variant of Fagerhult's SLD reflector technology and is designed for the latest model of A classified compact fluorescent lamp. Its advanced performances allows you to choose a lower output or fewer luminaires to achieve the same lighting quality. The ballast box can be angled or detached offering greater flexibility in areas where space is at a premium. 12 The difference is in the light treatment Not all downlights are the same. The principle of installing a light source in a circular luminaire is not difficult; the art is creating an efficient and comfortable light. Ensuring the light source performs in a limited space, with small light openings in combination with high luminous flux places great demand on mechanical cut off. Pleiad SLD G2 does not compromise. Rotational symmetry Downlights require an advanced reflector in order for the light to be distributed equally. Pleiad SLD G2 has a further developed variant of Pleiad's characteristic SLD, Symmetric Light Distribution, reflector technology. The reflectors design creates a rotational, symmetric light distribution with a directional independent light, helping to simplify the light planning. The new generation of SLD reflectors have a complex surface that helps create a balanced and efficient light; the mechanical cut-off angle is always at least 30 %. Pleiad SLD G2 is the downlight that has successfully combined horizontal light sources with rotational symmetry. Read more about the difference on page 13. Horizontal light sources In SLD G2 and Compact G2 the light source is placed horizontally to create the best possible cut-off, particularly in relation to areas with a low ceiling height. The detachable ballast box makes it possible to position all luminaires with the light source facing in the same direction, producing a consistent pattern of light. 12

13 Light control From adjusting the light levels in the room to automatically switching on and off, lighting control contributes towards both increasing the function of the lighting installation and its energy efficiency. The possibility to adjust the lighting levels depending on the activity in the room is yet another example of Pleiad G2 s flexibility. The luminaires are designed for several different types of basic or advanced light control. Read more about the alternatives on pages Larger light opening In spite of a smaller dimensions, Pleiad G2 has a larger light opening. This gives improved lighting performance with increased efficiency. Matt or specular reflector Pleiad Compact G2 has reflectors in two different designs, specular or matt. The specular reflector guarantees optimal efficiency and light distribution. When you wish to see where the light is coming from, or when using specific Pleiad accessories, the matt reflector is an option. 13

14 Good light in theory and reality SLD, Symmetric Light Distribution, is an advanced reflector technology that utilises the dome-shaped reflector in a downlight, to create superior lighting performance. A large number of decisions are made when planning are based on light distribution, usually presented in the form of the luminaire's polar diagram. A polar diagram is an excellent method of explaining the luminaire's properties, yet when it comes to downlights, there is a problem on account of the luminaire's parabolic qualities. In a traditional polar diagram the luminaire's rotational symmetry is presented with the help of a longitudinal and a lateral curve. However, the diagram says nothing about how the light is distributed at other angles. A light distribution, which in a polar diagram, appears fully symmetrical, in reality can be uneven. Using Fagerhult SLD the problem never occurs. The polar diagram shown here shows an approximate light distribution of about 90. All models of Pleiad SLD G2 have a light distribution of , irrespective of its size and how it's equipped. The mechanical cut-off is generally better than 30. All models of Pleiad SLD G2 with specular reflectors satisfy the general cut-off requirement < 1000 cd/m². 14

15 Real rotational symmetry This is SLD To place the light source horizontal is a preference from an integration point of view. A horizontal light source in a downlight helps provide a significantly better mechanical cut-off and increased visual comfort. The traditional disadvantage of this approach is that the light is not spread equally around the whole light source. SLD is a reflector technology that is based on an advanced combination of surfaces that compensate and redistribute the light around the whole luminaire. The light distribution becomes even and directionally independent, simplifying lighting planning while creating a comfortable visual experience. The SLD reflector gives a light curve with balanced rounding, which results in smooth transitions. This also means that no sharp spots of light appear on the floor or walls. A harmonious light that makes it easy for lighting planners to create light settings. The symmetry of the light distribution gives an unsurpassable even lighting over the lit surfaces. The job of the SLD reflector is to distribute light at all angles, and in doing so produce a symmetrical light pattern. This is how the light distribution appears from a Pleiad SLD G2 when seen from above. 15

16 Economy and environment go hand in hand The cleanest kilowatt-hour is the one that never needs to be produced. That s why we concentrate on developing energy efficient luminaires that can contribute towards reduced consumption of electricity and with that the emission of carbon dioxide. Pleiad G2 is a new generation of energy efficient downlights. To develop an energy efficient downlight is a challenge. The limited space in the luminaire housing easily results in high ambient temperatures that affect the light source's performance. Pleiad is the leader within energy efficiency and with Pleiad G2 an additional step forward has been made. A number of improvements have allowed us to increase energy efficiency by %, depending on the circumstances under which the luminaire must perform. Apart from the obvious advantage that the system consumes less energy, it is also possible to go down in wattage, or reduce the number of luminaires. Increased efficiency Several Pleiad luminaires have been equipped with ventilation holes in the luminaire housing. The resulting airflow cools the light source's outermost tip, also known as the cold point, which causes the fluorescent lamp to perform better. As a direct result fewer luminaires are required which, in turn, helps reduce the cooling requirements in the premises. The lower ambient temperature is not the only change that has an increased efficiency. The luminaires also have a larger light opening and a modified reflector which distributes the light more effectively. As one of the first luminaires on the market, Pleiad G2 has also been developed to optimise the efficiency of the new A classified compact fluorescent lamps, FSM 14 W and 17 W. 16

17 A new generation of compact light sources The A-classified compact light sources have a low mercury content. They are designed to give maximum luminous flux at a higher ambient temperature than traditional compact fluorescent lamps. This makes them an ideal solution for the specific temperature characteristics of a downlight. They also have a shorter ignition time, higher maintenance factor and live longer. Relamping is also easier. Light control Luminaires which operate at full strength when the sun shines or that are switched on despite there being no one in the premises, use a great deal of unnecessary energy. Integrating Pleiad G2 with one of Fagerhult's light control systems means the luminaire usage can be optimised. Daylight and occupancy detectors connected to a control system like DALI or SwitchDim can contribute towards reducing energy consumption by up to 60 %. 18 A good beginning makes a perfect ending Pleiad G2 has been developed from the bottom up, and during the process we have taken the entire life cycle of the luminaire into consideration, minimising the environmental impact at every stage. A luminaire's greatest environmental impact is during operation, a consideration which is key in an energy efficient design (pages 14 15). Other factors, such as selection of materials, recycling and transportation, have played a key part in the holistic view that has charcterised the development of Pleiad G2. Minimal material design Pleiad G2 has been designed to minimise material use; the luminaire is manufactured of a lightweight plastic material, PBT. The reduced weight offers advantages in connection with installation as well as reducing the environmental load in regards to transportation. Easy-to-dismantle when recycling All larger parts of the luminaire are made of the fully recyclable PBT. The luminaire is easy-to-dismantle to facilitate simple sorting and recycling. Long life, fewer luminaires Double, air insulated walls between the light source and ballast create improved margins for the HF-ballast and produces a downlight and light source that lives longer. 18

20 Innovative assembly saves time and money What is the most expensive; the luminaire or the installation? Installation costs as much as the luminaire, sometimes more if space is limited and difficult to work with. With Pleiad G2 you can get the job done in seconds instead of minutes. Pleiad G2 is delivered, as standard, with fitted light sources and optional connection. In combination with our assembly system you get an extremely rapid installation without using tools. The luminaires also comes with a dust protective film fitted in the light opening, which is easy-toremove after final cleaning Installation without tools Pleiad G2 is installed without the use of tools in three stages. The surfaces of the ballast box have been designed for smooth entry, without the risk of damaged edges. When the luminaire is straightened up the rear assembly spring automatically falls into place, followed by the front assembly spring when the luminaire housing is pushed up against the ceiling. The assembly spring adapts automatically to the thickness of the suspended ceiling (1 to 30 mm) and also makes it possible to dismantle the luminaire in an uncomplicated manner. The connection is made horizontally on the short-side of the ballast box and is concealed under a cover with integrated strain relief. 21 4. 5. Opening box with low heights When installing in ceilings with a very low inset depth the ballast box can be opened and the luminaire angled, so making installation easier in confined areas. This can be easily done with one hand. Note the bracket for the safety wire, which also regulates the minimum distance to the ceiling Detach for flexibility The luminaire is usually last to be installed in a ceiling where it has to share space with cable ladders, ventilation, sprinkler systems and other equipment that has already been installed. For this reason Pleiad G2 has a ballast box that can be detached and placed where there is space. Consequently, impossible situations are a thing of the past and the luminaires can always be installed with the light sources in the same direction, which give a balanced and comfortable light

22 Pleiad SLD G2 Pleiad SLD G2 s advanced light properties makes it an ideal solution for light planing with downlights. Equipped with Fagerhult's SLD reflector it combines flexibility with optimal light treatment. The balanced and glare-free light makes SLD G2 a downlight that is well suited to both office and educational environments. The SLD G2 luminaire housing and reflector have been developed to optimise the new generation of effective A-classified compact fluorescent lamps; FSM 14 W and 17 W. These light sources can increase efficiency by approximately 20 40%, offering significant energy savings and the scope to reduce the number of luminaires required. The SLD, Symmetric Light Distribution, reflector technology, is unique to Comfort G2. The design of the reflector creates rotational symmetric light distribution which is even and directionally independent. 28 Pleiad Compact G2 Pleiad Compact G2 is a quick-to-install downlight that combines minimal dimensions with exceptional lighting comfort. Compact G2 is ideal for limited inset depths and has extensive horizontal flexibility. In shopping centres, exhibition halls, production plants or everyday corridors, crowded suspended ceilings are no longer a lighting problem. Cable ladders, ventilation and sprinkler system share space in the ceiling with downlights which are usually the last to be installed; a difficult installation process where there is the opportunity to save a great deal of time and money. Compact G2 is designed to handle the overcrowding and can be installed without the need for tools. The detachable ballast box offers flexibility when installing; if something is in the way, the box can be moved around it. Despite its size, Compact G2 offers first class efficiency and the horizontal position of the light source gives good mechanical cut-off in relation to the low assembly heights. All downlights can be installed with the light source facing in the same direction, providing a consistent light pattern on the ceiling. Room to breathe. 28

Shaped by a range of decorative rings, in glass or aluminium, they are ideally suited to conference areas or receptions. All downlights in this series are based on Pleiad SLD G2. Three models with a circular light opening and equipped with SLD reflector technology for optimal light treatment and energy efficiency. The shape of the light opening gives a good degree of efficiency and excellent light treatment, making Square an imaginative alternative for general lighting in offices, auditoriums and restaurants. When, due to reasons of material or a lack of space, it is not possible to recess a luminaire in the ceiling, Compact is an ideal alternative. Non-existent inset depth or ceiling materials that prevents hole-making, such as concrete, are conditions that can govern the choice of a surface mounted downlight. The batteries have 1 or 3 hours operating time. The box is available in three different styles: A standard version without self-test, a potential free version with self-test and a DALI version with self-test. The self-test is in accordance with EN The boxes are intended to be recessed in unventilated or ventilated ceilings. The diode that indicates the charge/status is connected to the luminaire. The battery has its own space on the side of thebox; protecting all heavy current components against unintentional when changing the batteries. The boxes are designed in class II, IP 20 and are F marked. Connection The box is supplied with a 15-way multi connector installed on 0.25 m wiring, for simple connection to the intended luminaire. All external connections are made in a separate space in the emergency box. The boxes are prepared for the connection of control cables that allow for dimming. The terminal block is equipped with integrated fuses for incoming phases (ignition and charging phases). If there is a fault in the emergency lighting luminaire, or faulty work in the installation, the fuses create greater safety. Boxes with self-test are also equipped with separate terminal blocks for connecting DALI or supervision systems based on the use of potential free contacts. Miscellaneous The emergency boxes require specially prepared luminaires with HF-standard or HF-dim, which are supplied with diodes for charging/status and equipped with the corresponding multi connector as the box. The box can be combined with luminaires with W FSQ-E/ FSM-E light sources. We recommend mercury type light sources, but amalgam light sources may also be used. The 15-way multi-connector is connected to the specially adapted emergency lighting luminaire. This solution can reduce installation time and also guarantees that the connection between the box and luminaire is carried out correctly and safely. 68
