Based upon the highly established Slimline range, Slimline Part M wiring accessories are supplied with grey front plates and white rockers, providing optimum contrast to both locate the accessory and determine its setting. Slimline Part M offers a comprehensive range of accessories including sockets, switches, connection units and shaver sockets. As well as meeting the general requirements for residential properties, range options including grey data and grey gridplates, providing additional power, telecom, data and audio visual solutions. Plate Switches offer the option of a wide rocker switch which can be easily operated by those with limited dexterity. Switch rockers on multi-gang plate switches are separated, preventing inadvertent operation. Socket Outlets offer the option of a two gang switched socket outlet with outboard rockers, preventing inadvertent operation. The range also includes switches with neon indicators, making it easier for the user to determine if the switch is on or off. 146 Carbon Monoxide Alarms Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous gas created when fossil fuels go through a combustion process. It is tasteless and odourless and if you are exposed to it in unvented areas, it can have very serious health effects. There are various appliances around the home that can create carbon monoxide. These fossil burning appliances can include boilers, gas fires or portable heaters, your fireplace and even gas cookers. These appliances should be vented correctly to allow any carbon monoxide to be exhausted into the open atmosphere, taking it safely away. Carbon monoxide is created when the combustion of these fossil fuels is incomplete. To ensure that appliances are working correctly, they should be maintained regularly, preferably annually. The level of carbon monoxide is measured in parts per million (ppm). The maximum allowable concentration for continuous exposure is 35ppm in an 8 hour period. Know the danger signs Staining, sooting or discolouration around the appliance A yellow or orange flame where normally blue Condensation on walls and windows once the appliance is lit Rusting or water streaking on appliance cabinet/vent/chimney Loose or disconnected vent/chimney connections or guards What the regulations say The Building Regulations Approved Document J, 2010 edition, calls for carbon monoxide alarms to be provided in the room where a solid fuel appliance is installed, whether it is a new or replacement appliance being installed (clause 2.34). Where properties have flues that are concealed and in voids, inspection hatches need to be fitted, but until this happens CO alarms should be installed in the interim (TB008 Edition 2). Positioning of Alarms Alarms should be placed in the same room as the fuel burning appliance, between 1-3m away horizontally. The alarm should also be placed in any room that has a flue running through it. Alarms should not be positioned in enclosed spaces, for example behind curtains or cupboards, and not next to doorways or windows. 4 Technical Hotline

164 Technical Lampholder T Rating Bayonet (B22) lampholders without a T marking or marked T1 are suitable for temperatures on the cap up to and including 165ºC. Bayonet (B22) lampholders with a T2 marking are suitable for temperatures on the cap up to and including 210ºC. Alternatively T ratings may state the operating temperature, e.g. T190 would equate to 190ºC. Lamp cap temperatures will depend on the lampholder orientation, lampshade or enclosure used and lamp rating. Refer to the I.E.E. Wiring Regulation (BS7671) for the use of T2 rated lampholders. Engraving An engraving service is available for a limited range of white wiring accessories. Products can be engraved in an upper and lower case standard font, with either red or black in fill. Engraved products must be ordered in multiples of 10, and are available with a 14 day lead time for stock items, with delivery subject to normal terms. 165 Technical LED Dimmers The dimmer switches in all of Deta s ranges are suitable for controlling LED, incandescent and inductive loads. LED Dimmers Deta s LED Dimmers can operate up to 100W of Dimmable LED lamps and they are optimised to control our dimmable LED Fire Rated Downlights. They can also be configured to control other brands of LED lamps. The number of lamps these dimmers can control make them suitable for all environments as they control as few as a single lamp, right up to 14 lamps if using our 7W LED downlights. The LED dimmer can be reprogrammed from Leading Edge (LE) to Trailing Edge (TE) mode if compatibility issues are found when dimming LED lamps. In addition to this the minimum dimming can be set see instruction leaflet. Deta s LED dimmers can be used in 2 way circuits, with a dimmer in one position and a retractive push to make switch in the other. The retractive switch will allow dimming from the second position as well as switching the light on and off. Additionally, more than one push to make switch can be used to dim the light up and down from different positions. For optimum performance, all the LED lamps connected to the dimmer must be of the same brand and wattage. They can also control mains voltage and low voltage lamps, as well as other leading brands of LED lamps, with minimal re-programming. They are available in Deta s Slimline, Slimline Décor, Ultra Flatplate and Ultra Screwless ranges in both 1g and 2g, and as a Gridswitch Module. 167 Technical Dimmers Installation Gridswitch dimmers Dimmer switch modules in the Gridswitch range need to be de-rated need when installed in multiple gang frontplates. Also, the dimmer switches must be installed in the lower rows of the frontplate. It is recommended that back boxes for dimmer switches are at least 40mm deep. Dimmers in the bottom row should be de-rated to 75% of the their maximum load. Dimmers in the second from bottom row should be de-rated to 50% of the their maximum load, and dimmers in the third from bottom row should be de-rated to 150W. It is not advisable to install dimmers in the top row. The 400W dimmer, G3521, consists of two separate modules that are linked together, allowing to be installed in all sizes of frontplate from 2g up to 24g and where the control module to be installed above, below or beside the coil module. The 700W dimmer, G3524, takes up two module spaces, and a blank is needed with it. The 1 10V control, G3604, is suitable for controlling up to 60 dimmable ballasts. A separate switch module is needed to switch the ballasts which must be rated to control the load. It is recommended that 1.00mm 2 cable is used for the ELV control signal, which should not be run in the same cable containment system as the mains voltage cables, as per the IEE Wiring Regulations. 168 Technical PART M Engraving Building Regulation Approved Document M (commonly referred to as Part M) covers access to and use of buildings and facilities by disabled people. Part M involves the provision of wide doorways, ramped access for wheelchairs, design of hand rails, stairwells and so on. With respect to switches, outlets and controls there are design considerations that should be taken into consideration where the key factors are easy of operation, visibility, height and freedom of obstruction. Users of switches, outlets and controls should be able to locate a control and know what setting it is on without inadvertently changing its setting. Controls which visually contrast with their surroundings are more convenient for visually impaired people, as are light switches that have large or wide rockers. It is preferable for switches on panels and multiple socket outlets to be well separated to avoid inadvertent operation. Apart from the design of the switch, outlet or control, its position is important. The switches will satisfy requirement M1 where they are position between 400 and 1200mm from the floor, and between 900 and 1100mm for general public use. Whereas sockets should be mounted between 400 and 1000mm. 169 Technical TV Systems TV outlets or modules must not be installed in the same enclosure as mains voltage systems TV Outlets There are various types of TV systems and therefore a suitable system will be subject to the requirements of the installation. A basic system may have one satellite dish or aerial feeding a single TV connection point. However, where multiple TV outlets are required, the signal will need to be distributed accordingly, and may involve the use of splitters or amplifiers. Isolated sockets are intended for use where safety isolation (rated at 2kV) is required to provide protection against faults within any mains powered product used on different parts of the distribution system. Therefore, isolated sockets are to be installed where multiple co-axial socket outlets are required. Diplexer outlets are intended for use where both TV and FM/DAB signals are combined on a single downlead. The filter within the diplexer separates the appropriate signal and feeds them to the relevant output connection. Triplexer outlets are intended for use where TV, FM/DAB and satellite signals are combined on a single downlead. The filter within the triplexer separates the appropriate signal and feeds them to the relevant output connection. The triplexer provides a DC control path in the SAT signal path. Quadplexer outlets contain TV, FM/DAB and two satellite outlets and are intended for use with Sky+, or more complex installations. A range of data plates and modules are also available in all Deta ranges, which allow the use of additional modules such as co-axial return sockets and telephone outlets for interactive TV applications. 171 Technical IP Ratings The IP (international protection) rating given to an enclosure states the degree of protection it offers by means of two digits. A summary of these is shown below; for a more detailed definition, see IEC 529: 1989, BS EN 60529: First Digit Protection against solid foreign objects and access to hazardous parts The first digit covers protection against penetration by solid objects, which includes hands and tools such as screwdrivers. At the lowest of seven levels, 0, no protection is offered, either of the equipment itself from damage by intrusion or of a person contacting live or moving parts. At the highest, 6, there shall be no entry of dust. Second Digit Protection against ingress of water The second digit covers the degree of protection against the entry of water, on a progressive scale. For example, number 1 indicates that dripping water shall have no harmful effect, and number 6, that water projected in powerful jets against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects. IEC 529, BS EN does not apply to protection against the risk of explosion or conditions such as humidity, corrosive gases, fungi or vermin. In certain cases equipment designed to be mounted in an enclosure will contribute towards the stated IP rating (eg pushbuttons mounted in an enclosure).
