2 was started in 1976 by a young engineer who had a better idea in tank gauge electronics. His employer at the time,, did not want to invest in state-of-the-art technology, so he started L&J. Ten years later L&J bought GPE. Needless to say, he reorganized GPE s management and its new product development philosophy. Along with GPE, L&J bought, a GPE affiliate that manufactures fittings and valves for the same type of tanks that used the gauging equipment. A short time later, all 3 companies were reorganized under one corporate entity called. In 1994, a brand new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility was built to bring all of the L&J Technologies manufacturing efforts under one roof. In 1996, L&J bought, a manufacturer of liquid level controls and Hi/Low level switches for the boiler, process, and liquid storage industries. On February 28, 2000, L&J purchased Durlam Associates, (now Durlam Inc.). is located in Houston, Texas and is the leading manufacturer of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) Derakane 470 conservation vents and fittings. On March 31, 2000, L&J purchased Delavan Process Instrumentation in Naugatuck, CT. is a well-established name in ultrasonic, capacitance and microwave point level and continuous level measurement for liquids and solids. Delavan was relocated to L&J Technologies corporate headquarters in Hillside, Illinois. Today, the L&J family of companies is the world s largest manufacturer specializing in the monitoring, management, and control of bulk liquids. L&J provides quality products for the Petroleum, Petrochemical, Chemical, Food, Pharmaceutical, Pipeline, Steel, Water Treatment and Biogas ( ) Industries. Visit L&J Technologies on the internet at 2

4 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Description The CAP-ANALOG/4100 system consists of an electronic transmitter mounted in a Cast Aluminum Explosion Proof Housing. This housing normally is integrally mounted on the rear of the sensor probe. Probes are manufactured in a variety of insulating materials and metals. The active length of the probe will vary subject to the specific application of that system. The probe usually is mounted in a vertical position. Normally the probe is threaded into the process with a ¾ or 1" NPT connection. 1.2 Principle of Operation The CAP-ANALOG/4100 along with its probe sensor operates as a capacitance sensitive system that converts changes in level to changes in capacitance. After calibration any change in level is recognized and converted to an analog output signal 4-20 ma. The CAP-ANALOG.4100 is supplied with three 15 turn, ZERO, SPAN and CAL adjust potentiometers. These controls are independent and non-interacting. In addition, four DIP Switches are provided to extend the range of the ZERO and SPAN potentiometers. 1.3 Specifications Supply Voltage: Nominal Absolute Limits 24 VDC VDC Output 4-20mAD.C. 600 Ohms Max. at 24 VDC Housing Integral Explosion Proof & Weather Tight Span Range 1 Range 2 (SPAN SW #1 CLOSED) (SPAN SW#2 CLOSED) Delta C Min Max Min Max 10pF 70pF 35pf 320pF Range 3 Range 4 (SPAN SW #3 CLOSED) (SPAN Switches OPEN) Min: Max: Min: Max: 270pF 2700pF 2600pF 30,000pF Zero or Terminal Capacitance Low Range High Range (SW #4 OPEN) (SW #4 CLOSED) 2.0 INSTALLATION 2.1 Unpacking Normally the transmitter and the sensing probe are packed in separated cartons. Remove the contents of the shipping carton and check each item against the packing list before destroying any packing material. 2.2 Mechanical Installation Depending on the size and type of probe selected for use with this device, it may be preferable to mount the transmitter before installing the probe in the process vessel Unscrew and remove the Flat Cover Loosen the two captive flat head screws that secure the mounting bracket to the enclosure Remove the control unit from the enclosure Apply anti-seize type pipe sealant to the upper thread of the probe Thread the probe into the enclosure by hand To AVOID damage, screw a two-foot length of 1" threaded pipe to the side hub of the enclosure to grip while making up this connection. IMPORTANT: FOR HAZARDOUS AREA SERVICE, THE THREAD ENGAGEMENT OF THE PROBE MUST BE A MINIMUM OF FIVE (5) FULL THREADS. CONFIRM THE ENGAGEMENT IS ADEQUATE Insert the RED Banana Plug from the transmitter into the FEMALE Connection on the top of the probe Replace the transmitter in the enclosure and tighten the two (2) captive screws. Fine adj: Subtracts 100pf max Stability +.01 % / ºF Coarse adj: 700pf max 2.3 Non-Metallic Tanks When a non-metallic tank is used, a ground return should be installed to provide greater stability. This may be a metal rod installed in the tank or a ground strap fastened to the exterior of the tank. This ground should be fastened to the same earth ground as the instrument. 4

6 3.0 OPERATIONS 3.1 General This section contains the calibration and operation information for the CAP-ANALOG/4100 Transmitter. 3.2 Controls The location of the adjustable controls are shown in Fig. #1. Their description and function are as follows: ZERO Adjustment This 15-turn potentiometer matches the ZERO point of the instrument to the desired process ZERO level CAL Adjustment This 15-turn potentiometer matches the low level (probe low level) to the zero setting SPAN Adjustment This 15-turn potentiometer matches the Full Scale SPAN (upper limit) to the desired upper limit of the process level RANGE Switches These switches match the instrument to the specific process. ZERO Range - Switch (4) Range Dip Switch Position Low OPEN SW #4 High CLOSED SW #4 Span Range - Switch (#1,#2,#3) Range Dip Switch Position RANGE 1 CLOSE #1 OPEN #2 AND #3 RANGE 2 CLOSE #2 OPEN #1 AND #3 RANGE 3 CLOSED #3 OPEN #1 AND #2 RANGE 4 OPEN #1, #2 AND # CAL Switch This is a switch that is in the Operation mode when placed away from CAL pot connecting the probe to the electronics. When switched to the CAL mode this disconnects the probe and connects an adjustable capacitance instead of the probe to the circuit Invert Switch This is a switch to invert output from 4mA to 20mA to 20mA to 4mA. If 4mA (zero) and 20mA (full span) is desired place switch towards potted module. If 4mA (full span) and 20mA (zero) is desired then place switch away from potted module. Calibration should be done in normal mode Invert Switch. This pot is factory set for 4mA when inverted output is desired. 3.3 Indicators The CAP-ANALOG/4100 without a voltmeter or current meter is a "BLIND" device. An analog or digital indicator that requires a 4-20 ma DC input signal may be connected as shown in section connect voltmeter capable of reading millivolts (.04 to.2 volts) to TP1 (+) and TP2 (-). 3.4 Adjustment Procedures INFORMATION COMMON TO ALL CONDITIONS -Zero Adjust, SPAN Adjust and CAL Adjust are 15 turn potentiometers with slip clutches at both ends Process material must be a minimum of 1" up from probe tip for proper zero setting Place the Invert switch towards the potted module Place Cal switch away from Cal pot Set SPAN Switch "#2" closed, Switch "#1,#3 and #4" to OPEN position Turn Span Pot and Zero Pot more than 15 turns CCW then back 7 turns CW Raise material to low level (1" inch up from tip of probe) Turn Zero pot CW or CCW until 4 ma (.04 volts) is achieved. If Zero pot is full CCW and reading is still above 4 ma, then close switch #4 and adjust for 4mA. 6
7 Place the Cal switch towards Cal pot and adjust Cal pot until 4 ma (.04 volts) is achieved. Note: Once the Cal pot is set, be careful not to turn it later since this setting represents the probe's low level. A drop of pot seal would be good practice, to maintain this setting. Place the Cal Switch away from the Cal pot Raise the level to the desired highest level. If reading is more than 22 ma open Span Switch "#2" and close Span switch "#3" and go to step If reading is less than 22 ma adjust Span pot for 20 ma and go to step Place the Cal switch towards the Cal pot and adjust Zero pot for 4 ma 4.0 MAINTENANCE & SERVICE 4.1 One-Year Product Warranty DELAVAN PROCESS INSTRUMENTATION, control products will be replaced, put in good operating condition, or the purchase price refunded, at the option of DELAVAN, free of charges except transportation, if defective in their manufacture, labeling, packaging, or shipping, and if notice of said defect is received by DELAVAN within one year from the date of shipment. The cost of such replacement, repair or refund of purchase price shall be the exclusive remedy for any breach of any warranty, and DELAVAN shall not be liable to any person for consequential damages for injury or commercial loss resulting from any breach of any warranty. DELAVAN makes no warranty of fitness for a particular purpose, and makes no other warranty, express or implied, including implied warranty arising from course of dealing or usage of trade Place the Cal Switch away from the Cal pot. If reading is more than 22 ma, open all span switches and adjust Span pot for 20 ma and go to step If reading is less than 22 ma adjust Span pot for 20 ma and go to step Once the correct ranges is found, adjust the zero pot for 4 ma while the Cal Switch is towards the Cal pot. Adjust the span pot (while the Cal switch is away from the Cal pot) with material at full level. Repeat this sequence until reading are precisely 4 ma (low) and 20 ma (high). If Span pot is adjusted full CW and still cannot reach 20 ma go back one Span range. (Example - If in Range 2 proceed to Range 1) Adjustment for inverted output operation Follow procedure as stated in then switch the inverting switch towards block. Now the output will be inverted. 7
