2 Tech Talk News & Views from Hi-Tech Seals Vol. 33 September 2013 Expanded Machining Capabilities Live Tooling & Milling Our machining department was founded in 1999 with one lathe and a short list of billets and tube stock. We quickly recognized the benefit our machining service provided to our customers. Over the next 14 years we continued to improve our inventory, expand our machining capabilities, and added in house drafting services. Hi-Tech Seals most robust CNC, the HAAS SL-30, machines components up to an outside diameter of 29-1/2 and offers live tooling capabilities. With the combination of CNC operations and live tooling, the SL-30 allows our team to perform two stage jobs in one streamlined process, saving time and money. Standard CNC components are created by spinning rod or tube stock while running a cutting bit along the surface, accurately removing unwanted material. The SL-30 can incorporate a secondary operation, where it utilizes a set of rotating bits that can work in conjunction with the chuck (base that holds the material). Our machining facility has expanded our machining capabilities even further with the addition of a HAAS Super Mini Mill 2. The mill uses a rotary cutting tool that travels along its cutting path, discarding excess material. The Mini Mill 2 has a working surface area of 20 x 16 x 14. 3 News & Views from Hi-Tech Seals Vol. 33 September 2013 Tech Talk Technically Speaking NORSOK Standard M-710: Sour Gas Aging The quality levels of compounds can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. If a compound fails to perform in harsh conditions it can result in the shutdown of the drilling site. NORSOK standards are developed by the Norwegian petroleum industry to ensure safety, add value to, and improve cost effectiveness of petroleum industry developments and operations. NORSOK standards have been adopted globally, because of their strict and practical test criteria. One notable test procedure is the NORSOK M-710 standard. This standard defines the requirements for critical elastomer and thermoplastic sealing, seat, and back up material for permanent use subsea, well completion, control systems and valves. In addition, standard M-710 Annex A includes testing for sour gas (H 2 S) aging. The tests are conducted at three separate elevated test temperatures over an extended period of time in a hydrocarbon fluid mixture (simulating sour gas). The third party testing organization will determine whether the material meets the following acceptable criteria: Volume change of +5% / -1% Tensile strength, elongation, E-modulus: +/- 50% Visual inspection: no dissolution tendency, cracking, blistering, deformation Ketron 1000 PEEK: Compliant Quadrant EPP Ketron 1000 PEEK was tested and is compliant with NORSOK Standard M-710. The test was performed on machined test samples produced from both extruded and injection molded Ketron 1000 PEEK. Under the criteria of the NORSOK standard, you are unable to certify a resin; the test must be performed on finished components. The results of the test concluded that Ketron 1000 PEEK stock shapes (both extruded and injection molded) comply with the NORSOK standard M-710 for sour gas aging. This means, any finished Ketron 1000 PEEK component, machined by Hi-Tech Seals, is compliant with NORSOK standard M-710. Compliant Elastomer Compounds Hi-Tech Seals offers several advanced compounds from Precision Polymer Engineering (PPE), which are compliant with NORSOK standard M-710. Sour gas compounds include: EnDura A90H Aflas, V91J fluorocarbon, and V91A low temperature fluorocarbon. Performance can be taken to the next level with PPE s newly certified perfluoroelastomer compounds Perlast G92E and low temperature Perlast ICE G90LT. Edmonton, AB (Head Office) 3
4 Tech Talk News & Views from Hi-Tech Seals Vol. 33 September 2013 Highly Saturated Nitrile Carboxylated Nitrile, A Thing Of The Past Highly Saturated Nitrile (HSN) is a commonly used rubber sealing material in the oil and gas industry. HSN has increasingly become the favoured material over Carboxylated Nitrile (CBX) elastomers. HSN possesses similar and/or better wear properties than CBX, improved extrusion resistance, and superior chemical resistance. Selecting a Highly Saturated Nitrile compound over a Carboxylated Nitrile compound will provide you with superior high and low temperature capabilities. The typical temperature range for a CBX elastomer is from -20 C to 135 C, whereas the typical HSN temperature range is from -40 C to 160 C. Hi-Tech Seals offers two new high strength modulus, internally lubricated Highly Saturated Nitrile compounds; H9MG and H9MY. The two compounds, are specifically used in oilfield downhole applications. The internal lubricants offer improved wear and dynamic properties.
