7 Cross-drilled or Slotted; which is better? The age-old question and like most questions of the same nature, the answer is it depends. When deciding on a rotor, its use has a great impact on the final decision. Will the rotors be used on the streets, around canyons, or on the track? Will they be used in towing applications? The first step to answering the question of which rotor would be best, is to understand what each design is meant to do: Plain Rotors: the simplest and most economical rotor design. These are meant to provide enough stopping power for street use; mostly suitable for commuting. Slotted Rotors: these rotors are designed with grooves in the face meant to help clear debris and gasses away from the brake pad face Cross-drilled Rotors: these rotors are designed with holes drilled axially from one face to the next. They are meant to allow gasses formed by the brake pads to escape. They also provide an added benefit by allowing more air to circulate through the rotor Slotted & Cross-drilled: these rotors were initially designed to provide benefits of both slotted and crossdrilled rotors. They keep the pad surface clean, allow gasses to escape, and allow a slightly higher flow rate of air which helps in cooling ONE- vs TWO- PIECE ROTORS In general, two-piece rotors outperform one-piece rotors in most aspects. They are lighter, allow for more airflow, and can manage heat much better than one-piece rotors. The downside: they re usually louder and cost about three to four times more than one-piece rotors. For this reason, they are mostly used where a higher level of performance is needed in demanding applications such as racing. All of Remmen Single-piece rotors are heat treated for a homogenous metallic structure ensuring minimal warping and consistent performance through countless heat cycles. Slotted & Cross-drilled, Series 130: Combining features of both Cross-drilled and Slotted designs, this rotor takes advantage of the high cooling rates of the cross-drilled design and the sweeping properties of the slotted design. 12 HAT RING Not all two-piece rotors are made the same. While they all provide improvements in weight savings over one-piece rotors, they typically come in assemblies called direct-bolt rotors or fully-floating rotors Fully-floating: A two-piece rotor assembly where the ring and hat are fixed together by bobbins. The bobbin connects but does not tighten down on the hat and ring such that it allows for movement in the radial and axial directions. This allows the rotor to expand freely under thermal stresses and also to adjust to small changes in the suspensions geometry during high-g turns and extreme braking (pad knockoff and run-off). The adjustment ensures flat and even contact with the brake pads on both faces of the rotor, improving the performance of the brakes. The downside is that these rotors typically make noise and they ll tend to wear out the hats out faster. Direct-bolt: A two piece rotor assembly where the ring and the hat are fixed together by bolts. Movements are restricted axially and radially such that the rotor essentially acts as a onepiece rotor. The benefit over One-piece rotors is the weight savings and cooling rate. Not an ideal option that allows for uniform thermal expansion of the rotor. Acceptable for light track use.
