We recognize the vast number of performance engine suppliers available in today s market and are very thankful you have chosen TiC as your source for this performance engine build. We strive for perfection in every engine we design and build regardless of its desired horsepower or use. During our time as a performance automotive supplier and builder we have assembled a countless number of engines all being unique and purpose built. Your engine has been built in a climate controlled environment using precision measurement instruments to ensure it meets our standards and the highest standards of the aftermarket automotive performance industry. Below will be information on the following topics: Shipping Installation Start up Maintenance Tuning Warranty It is very important to thoroughly read and understand the information contained within this document. This document will outline the installation, care and maintenance procedures that you MUST follow for the proper operation and warranty of the engine. These procedures have been developed through our experience with building, tuning and racing Subaru powered cars over the last 15 years. They are guidelines that are meant to be followed strictly, but are not a replacement for attention to detail or common sense. 3 SHIPPING Your engine will arrive in a specifically sized and packed heavy duty cardboard box. It will be wrapped in plastic to prevent the intrusion of contaminants. The package will require a signature for delivery and hence will not be left unattended. It is your responsibility to immediately inspect the package for any signs of external intrusion of foreign objects or large scale damage to the exterior of the package. If you see any signs of such damage immediately contact/show the package delivery person and contact us at The package will ship insured in the event it is damaged during shipping. INSTALLATION Professional installation is required in accordance with the warranty information found later in this document. Long block assembly should be performed in a clean, dust/dirt free, climate controlled (72-80*F) facility to ensure proper clearance and tolerances are met. Engine assembly procedures must follow the factory Subaru Service manual precisely unless otherwise stated by TiC. New OEM gaskets (or TiC supplied) gaskets will be used for the entirety of the engine assembly process. The initial start up/engine priming procedure must be followed precisely. DID YOUR LAST ENGINE FAIL?? If your last engine failed it is critical to know how and why the failure occurred. If you do not determine the root cause of failure of your previous engine you may very well suffer a repeat failure. Typical failures of engines will result in the potential for damage to other engine components including, but not limited to: Oil pump Oil cooler Cam journals Turbo bearings AVCS/variable cam gears Cams Valves / valve seats / valve springs / valve guides Page 3

4 Therefore it is essential to perform the following maintenance/replacement of items in accordance to the cause of failure below: If you engine suffered a bearing failure or damage where debris has been scattered throughout the engine you are REQUIRED to replace the engine oil cooler (if equipped), the oil pump, and any filters (engine/avcs) that exist. Any parts of the engine that see engine oil that are not being replaced must be thoroughly cleaned and inspected. This includes engine oil feed lines turbo/avcs), oil pick up tube and any other component that oil touched. AVCS solenoids and AVCS cam gears need to be disassembled and cleaned thoroughly. The cylinder head/heads need to be refreshed by a qualified machine shop. The cylinder head refresh will include a full cleaning (preferably ultrasonically) with a full tear down of all valve train and oiling components. The valves should be pressure/vacuum tested to ensure there is no leakage present. If leakage is present or there are signs of pitting on the valves a valve job is required. It is REQUIRED that all heads be resurfaced to ensure proper sealing of the head to block surfaces. This is a good time to inspect all wear items on the outside of the engine as well and replace as necessary. This includes hoses, clamps, timing belt, timing pulleys, timing guides, fittings, etc INITIAL START UP The initial start up of a new engine is critical to its long term health and longevity. This is the time when brand new materials mate and wear in and when the break in process begins. The step by step procedures listed below should be followed exactly. 1. After assembly and before installation hand turn the motor via the crank snout bolt and double check the timing while doing so. 2. Install engine and prefill all fluids. 3. Prefill the new OEM Subaru oil filter you will be using for start up with a conventional/non synthetic oil of weight 10-15/40. We often use Shell 15w40 for this purpose as it has been proven to promote good oil pressure and protection on our new engines. 4. Disconnect the crank sensor on the engine and remove all spark plugs. Disconnecting the crank sensor will prevent spark when cranking. Removing the spark plugs from the engine will ensure the bearings do not suffer damage before oil pressure is built within the engine. 5. Crank the engine using the starter/key for seconds at a time until oil pressure has been achieved as indicated on an oil pressure gauge or by the act of the factory low oil pressure light deilluminating. 5 6. Check for leaks in and around the engine bay. 7. Install the proper spark plugs and plug in the crank sensor 8. Crank the engine over allowing it to fire and run. Allow the engine to run for seconds while you carefully listen for any odd noises. Then shut the engine off and check in and around the engine bay for any leaks. 9. Start the engine a second time. You will now allow the engine to run long enough to reach operating temperature. While the engine is coming up to temp it is important to continuously check for leaks, verify oil pressure, top up the cooling system and listen for odd noises. If anything seems outside of normal in any of these areas turn off the engine immediately and check through your installation. Once the engine has come up to temp (fans running/thermostat open) shut the engine off. 10. Once cool, drain the oil from the engine and change the engine oil filter using another OEM Subaru oil filter. Refill the engine with the same 10-15w40 conventional oil to the proper level. 11. You can now start up and drive the car. It is important while driving in the first 50 miles to vary engine rpm up to a limit of 4000 and to stay out of boost. Use as much engine braking as possible to promote ring seal and build compression. Continuously be mindful of noises and leaks during this first drive. MAINTENANCE After the initial start up the engine has been completed you have entered the maintenance phase of engine ownership which will persist over the life of the engine. Below are the precise intervals to follow for maintenance and long term health of your engine. It is critical that you check the oil and coolant levels of your engine at every fuel fill. Oil Change Intervals Change oil and filter after the first heat cycle using conventional non synthetic oil (10-15w40) and new Subaru engine oil filter Change oil and filter at 50 miles using conventional non synthetic oil (10-15w40) and new Subaru engine oil filter Change oil and filter at 500 miles using conventional non synthetic oil (10-15w40) and new Subaru engine oil filter Change oil and filter at 1500 miles using synthetic oil (5w40*) and new Subaru engine oil filter. We recommend Motul synthetic 5w40 oil for street driven cars. *Engines built to track or drag tolerances will require a heavier weight oil. Page 5

6 Change oil and filter at 3000 miles using synthetic oil (5w40*) and new Subaru engine oil filter. *Engines built to track or drag tolerances will require a heavier weight oil. From this point forward change the engine oil and filter every miles and make sure you check the engine oil at every fuel fill. Continue to use Motul 5w40* synthetic oil and Subaru OEM oil filters It is possible for built engines to consume oil between oil changes. While normally the amount of oil consumed is small it is possible to see up to 1 quart of consumption per 3000 miles. DO NOT EXCEED 3000 MILES ON ANY OIL CHANGE INTERVAL TUNING Tuning is one of the most critically important aspects to the long term health of your new engine. A proper tune from a qualified tuner will promote smooth operation free of detonation and allow the engine to run at peak efficiency for a longer period of time. TiC offers tuning services in house for customers willing to travel to our location. If you do not know of a tuner in your area that can properly tune your car please contact us so we can assist in finding one. Again, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of using a reputable tuner. WARRANTY We at Turn in Concepts stand behind the quality of our work! We want you to be confident in your performance engine purchase and offer a warranty on every engine built by us. The terms of the TiC Engine Warranty are as follows: Warranty coverage extends to only the portions assembled by Turn in Concepts Warranty coverage on engines/short blocks is offered for 12 months/12k miles (whichever comes first) from the date of purchase Short block warranty is limited to the short block itself and does not cover any incidental items such as heads, turbo, accessories, gaskets, or labor to assemble or install these items. Warranty coverage is offered only on short blocks that are professionally installed as per our installation guidelines Evidence/records of proper maintenance per the maintenance guidelines listed above are required and the responsibility of the owner Warranty coverage extends only to the original purchaser of the engine Page 6

7 Should an engine/ short block need to be returned to Turn in Concepts for investigation of a warranty claim it must retain the original tamperproof seals, and may not be disassembled by anyone other than Turn in Concepts staff Parts not manufactured by Turn in Concepts carries the original manufacturer s warranty Customer is responsible for all costs associated with the warranty process including labor to remove and install engine, parts associated with rebuilding, shipping costs of engine to and from Turn in Concepts and all tear down costs associated with invalid warranty claim Page 7
