2 History A ship s logbook is essential to its navigation and is used to record a variety of information. While very early logbooks recorded only navigational information, they eventually evolved to document a wide variety of data. Operational data for a ship, such as weather conditions, times of routine and significant events (including the ship s docking), and records of mechanical and crew operations can all be found in a ships log. As a result, logbooks provide an incredibly detailed glimpse into what life at sea was like during a variety of different sailing ages. Scope and Content Notes The logbook collection consists of approximately 60 logbooks, including both traditional logbooks and books that document the business workings of a ship, including pay and account books. Tugboats, passenger liners and yachts are amongst the ships represented in this collection. As a result, one can see the evolution of ships and shipping and the emergence of sea travel as leisure. This collection contains both rough (unofficial) and smooth (official) logs for various ships. Some of the logbooks in this collection are from ships owned, or at one point owned, by the museum. These include the Aqua, Major General William H. Hart, W.O. Decker, Don Ariano N. (Wavertree) and the TS Arethusa (Peking). Arrangement Series 1: Ships This series is comprised of logbooks for a variety of different ships, including Army ships, yachts, and passenger liners. A wide range of dates is represented, including the log of two ships Friendship and Repulse from Ships from Grace Line, the Black Ball Line, and Red Ball Line can be found in the series. Account books and crew payment books for specific ships are also included in this series. Series 2: Museum Ships This series consists of logbooks related to ships the museum currently or formerly owned. They are stored with this collection, rather than the museum s institutional archive, because they document periods of time when the ships were not owned by the museum. Primarily, these logbooks date from the mid-20 th century.
