At Scania, we understand the importance of keeping your truck, bus or coach on the road and minimising the time it spends in the workshop. Therefore we always review our preventative maintenance recommendations to achieve the best outcome for you. This includes capitalising on the product improvements that Scania continually introduces. Scania understands that unscheduled maintenance and repairs add unwanted costs to operators. When a truck, bus or coach is off the road, there are not only the continuing overheads of repayments and wages, but there are also the on-costs of replacement vehicles, call-outs and towing. And, of course, there is the cost to your goodwill and the potential damage to your relationship with your customer when the freight can t be delivered on time. Which items need attention? Scania has produced a list of some of the items we suggest be replaced or serviced as part of a preventative maintenance program that will maximise your fleet availability. These recommendations are based on the experience of Scania s after sales organisation the people who make up Australia s only nationwide manufacturer owned service network. Scania technicians are trained specifically on Scania so there s a wealth of knowledge that s gone into producing these suggestions. If you regularly have your vehicle serviced by your local Scania dealer, preventative maintenance can be part of the service. You will be advised if an item is worn and needs replacement, repair or a rebuild as part of your servicing regime. If you are not a regular customer, feel free to discuss the effect your application may have on the suggested schedule. And remember, in some cases a component may fail sooner than the suggested interval, no matter what your application. Some parts may well last longer it all depends on the component load cycle and the vehicle s application. How Scania has come up with its preventative maintenance suggestions. All Scania s preventative maintenance recommendations are based on Scania vehicles operating in a cross-section of environments, from short-haul buses to long-haul road train prime movers. Preventative service intervals are affected by a range of factors. These include: Gross weights. The higher your gross weight, the harder your vehicle works. Speed. Vehicles operating at highway speeds will often experience higher wear on engine and driveline components. Temperatures. Vehicles operating in higher temperatures may suffer higher wear rates, particularly when operating at high gross weights. Road surface. Vehicles operating offroad or on sub-standard bitumen may see greater wear of cab and axle air suspension components. Duty cycle. Vehicles operating in stopstart applications or heavy traffic may experience higher clutch, starter motor, turbocharger and transmission wear. 44

Examples include urban container cartage. Vehicles doing many trips in urban environments but also regularly doing country deliveries with annual kilometres over 120,000km per year. These vehicles have a maximum GCM of 45 tonnes. Examples include supermarket distribution. Vehicles doing over 120,000km per year where normal trip distances are over 200km. These vehicles generally travel interstate or between major centres within the state. They have a load factor less than 25 per cent of operating time at greater than 70 per cent of full load. Examples include linehaul operations with a single trailer, light B-double operations. Vehicles doing over 120,000km per year where normal trip distances are over 200km. Increased Profitability Maximise your Uptime Tailored plan via Operating data Servicing when required A truly tailored maintenance programme, Scania truck maintenance intervals and service requirements are now determined by using real-time operating data from each truck. This means that instead of service intervals based on set kilometres, and standard predefined service sheets, vehicles are called in for service when the operating data indicates that maintenance is needed. This means the vehicle receives exactly the maintenance it needs and, in most cases, delivers increased uptime by spending less time at the workshop. Scania Flexible Plans will take maintenance to an entirely new level. This new technology continuously monitors the vehicle s operating data which makes it possible to determine with a great deal of precision when various maintenance operations need to be carried out. A Scania service agreement means that the operator does not have to keep track of when the vehicle needs to be serviced; instead he or she is contacted by Scania when it is time for a tailored service and informed how long the vehicle will be needed. Scania Australia has approximately 2000 vehicles connected via the Scania Communicator that can potentially begin using flexible maintenance plans. Many more vehicles are prepared and can be retrofitted with the required hardware to take advantage of this leap forward in tailored vehicle maintenance plans.
