FUEL SAFETY Always use a fuel container with an anti-spill valve. Never refuel the machine while the engine is running. Always stop the engine and let it cool for a few minutes before refilling with mixed fuel. Make sure there is plenty of ventilation when refilling or mixing fuel (petrol and 2--stroke oil). Move the machine at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the refueling point before starting it. Never start the machine: If you have spilt fuel on it. Wipe off the spillage and allow remaining fuel to evaporate. If you have spilt fuel on yourself or your clothes, change your clothes. Wash any part of your body that has come in contact with fuel. Use soap and water. If the machine is leaking fuel. Check regularly for leaks from the fuel cap and fuel lines. Avoid all skin contact with fuel. Fuel is a skin irritant. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 20
MIXING THE OIL AND FUEL HOW TO MIX FUEL WARNING Petrol is flammable. Avoid smoking or bringing any flame or sparks near fuel. Make sure to stop the engine and allow it cool before refilling the unit. Select outdoor bare ground for filling with fuel and move at least 3 m (10 ft) away from the fuel filling point before starting the engine. Your strimmer runs off a mix of semi-synthetic 2-stroke oil and unleaded petrol (40:1). Our petrol tools come with a measuring jug with guide lines. Find the side marked 40:1, add your petrol to the first line and your 2-stroke oil to the second. Replace the jugs lid and shake the mixture for around a minute. PAGE 21
FILLING WITH OIL AND FUEL FILLING THE UNIT Untwist and remove the fuel cap. Rest the cap on a dustless place. Put mixed fuel into the fuel tank to 80% of the full capacity. Fasten the fuel cap securely and wipe up any fuel spillage around the unit. WARNING 1. Select bare ground for filling with fuel. 2. Move at least 10 feet (3 metres) away from the fuel filling point before starting the engine. 3. Stop the engine before refilling the unit with fuel. At that time, be sure to sufficiently agitate the mixed fuel in the container. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 22
FILLING WITH OIL AND FUEL FOR YOUR ENGINE LIFE, AVOID: 1. FUEL WITH NO OIL (RAW PETROL) It will cause severe damage to the internal engine parts very quickly. 2. GASOHOL It can cause deterioration of rubber and/orplastic parts and disruption of engine lubrication. 3. OIL FOR 4-STROKE ENGINE USE It can cause spark plug fouling, exhaust port blocking, or piston ring sticking. 4. Mixed fuels which have been left unused for a period of one month or more may clog the carburetor and result in the engine failing to operate properly. 5. In the case of storing the product for a long period of time, clean the fuel tank after rendering it empty. Next, start the engine and empty the carburettor of the composite fuel. 6. In the case of scrapping the used mixed oil container, scrap it only at an authorized repository site. PAGE 23
PRIME THE STRIMMER Press the priming bulb 5 to 8 times. This will help the strimmer start with less pulls of the starter cord. If you can t see fuel entering the priming bulb please contact SGS. Move the strimmers switch to the On (I) position. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 24
SET THE CHOKE For a cold engine, move the choke to the Start position (closed). Squeeze the throttle lever once. When re-starting the strimmer (warm engine) you can move the choke straight into the Run position (open). PAGE 25
START THE STRIMMER Place the strimmer on the ground so the pull start is facing up towards you. Make sure the cutting attachment is not touching the ground or might catch on any other object. Firmly hold the neck of the strimmer with your left hand and the pull start assembly with your right. The strimmer should start within 3-5 pulls on a new or cold engine. Slowly pull the starting rope with your right hand until you feel the resistance of the rope. Now, pull the pull start hard several times until the engine fires and starts. Pull the rope up as vertically as you can. Don t let the rope drag on the casing of the strimmer. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 26
OPEN THE CHOKE Once the machine is running, move the choke to the Run position (open)/ Squeeze the throttle to rev the strimmer and then let your machine idle for a seconds. Your strimmer should now be ready to use. PAGE 27
TROUBLESHOOTING If your strimmer hasn't started using the standard starting procedure, there's a a couple of things you can quickly check and try. Checking the Fuel Mix The most common problem with a strimmer not starting is that there's a problem with the fuel mix. Double check that you've used 40 parts fresh unleaded petrol to 1 part 2-stroke oil (40:1). Check the petrol you've used isn't stale. Adjusting the Carburetor Your strimmer needs a balanced combination of air and fuel reaching the carburetor. This balance needs to be consistent at all times otherwise your chainsaw will bog down when trying to start, and then die. If you hear the engine bog when you pull the trigger, the carburetor needs adjusting via the carb adjustment screw. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 28
ADJUSTING THE CARBURETOR Locate the adjustment screw on your machine Wind the carb screw all the way in (clockwise). Wind the carb screw turns anti-clockwise. Restart the starting procedure This is the most common set up for the carburetor, however you can fine tune it depending on how your strimmer is running: Erratic idling behaviour or poor acceleration - the engine needs more fuel so turn the adjustment screw anticlockwise until the engine runs and accelerates smoothly. Excessive exhaust smoke when idling - the engine is running too rich, so you need more air reaching the carburetor. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise until the engine speed drops. Now check that the engine still accelerates smoothly when you apply the throttle. PAGE 29
CHECK FOR ENGINE FLOODING There's a chance that if you've over used the pull start mechanism, you may have flooded the two-stroke engine. This is very simple to check and fix. Open up the casing and remove the black lead that covers the plug. If the spark plug is damp with fuel then the engine is flooded. Remove the plug, and allow the excess fuel to evaporate. Replace the plug and follow the usual starting procedure. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 30
CHECKING FOR A SPARK To find out whether the sparkplug of your strimmer is producing a spark, expose and remove the sparkplug as per the previous page. Pull the spark plug wire off the plug and remove the spark plug with the wrench included in your toolkit. Place the sparkplug back into the spark plug wire. Hold the boot end of the sparkplug wire with your hand and place the electrode tip against a metal surface. Make sure your tool is switched on. Using your other hand (or with the help of another person) pull the starter cord quickly. If the ignition is working correctly you should see blue sparks where the plug is touching the metal surface. If you don t see a spark you can contact our customer service team PAGE 31
CHECKING THE FUEL TANK FILTER Check the Tank Filter If you can t see fuel in the priming bulb, there s a good chance your tank filter is blocking the fuel mix from moving to the engine. Open up the fuel tank Dislodge the fuel filter from the neck of the tank (you might find this easier if you drain the fuel and remove the blue lid) Restart the starting procedure If you're still struggling to start your SGS strimmer after following the troubleshooting please contact us/ If you are still having trouble with your strimmer, then contact us using these methods: Call: (+44) support@sgs-engineering.com SGS Engineering UK Ltd 2 West Side Park, Belmore Way, Raynesway, Derby, DE21 7AZ. Readjust with the cable adjuster as required. 1-2mm 1) Cable adjuster ADJUSTING IDLING SPEED 1. If the engine stops frequently at idling mode, turn the adjusting screw clockwise. 2. When the cutting head keeps rotating after releasing the trigger, turn the adjusting screw counter-clockwise. (1) Idle adjusting screw Z NOTE Warm up the engine before adjusting the idling speed. PAGE 33
OPERATION Choose the blade or choose a suitable recommended cutting attachment, according to the object to be cut. WORKING WITH THE EDGE TRIMMER (WITH THE NYLON LINE) WARNING 1. Always wear eye protection such as safety goggles. Never lean over the rotating cutting head. Rocks or other debris could be thrown into eyes and face and cause serious personal injury. 2. Keep the cutting attachment guard in place at all times while the unit is operated. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 34
OPERATION ADJUSTING THE LINE LENGTH Your brush cutters are equipped with a semi-auto type nylon line head, that allows the operator to advance the line without stopping the engine. When the line becomes short, lightly tap the head on the ground while running the engine at full throttle. Each time the head is bumped, the line advances about 1 inch (25.4 mm). For better effect, tap the head on bare ground or hard soil. PAGE 35
OPERATION OPERATION 1. Check the bolt to fasten the blade and be sure the bolt has no fault, and no abrasion. 2. Be sure that the blade and the holder have been fastened according to the instructions and that the blade turns smoothly without abnormal noise. The rotating parts fastened incorrectly may cause serious accident to the operator. Make sure that the blade is not bent, warped, cracked, broken or damaged. If you find any damage to the blade, discard it and replace with a new one. By using the shoulder strap, hang the unit on your right side. Adjust the strap length so that the cutting head is parallel to the ground. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 36
OPERATION PERIODICAL BOLT ATTACHER SAFETY CHECK 1. Check the bolt every so often that fastens the blade and be sure the bolt has no fault, and no abrasion. 2. Be sure that the blade and the holder have been fastened secureley and that the blade turns smoothly without abnormal noise. WARNING Rotating parts fastened incorrectly may cause serious accident to the operator. Make sure that the blade is not bent, warped, cracked, broken or damaged. If you find any error to the blade, discard it and replace with a new one. PAGE 37
OPERATION WARNING Make sure to use shoulder strap and cutting attachment guard. CONTROLLING BLADE BOUNCE Blade thrust can cause serious personal injury. Carefully study this section. It is important that you understand what causes blade thrust, how you can reduce the chance of blade thrust and how you can remain in control of the unit if blade thrust does occur. 1. What causes blade thrust: Blade thrust can occur when the moving blade contacts an object that it cannot cut. This contact causes the blade to stop for an instant and then suddenly move or bounce away from the object that was hit. The operator can lose control of the unit and the blade can cause serious personal injury to the operator or any person nearby if the blade contacts any part of the body. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 38
OPERATION 2. How you can reduce the chance of blade thrust: a. Recognize that blade thrust can happen. By understanding and knowing about bounce, you can help eliminate the element of surprise. b. Cut fibrous weeds and grass only. Do not let the blade contact materials it cannot cut such as hard, woody vines and bushes or rocks, fences, metal, etc. c. Be extra prepared for bounce if you must cut where you cannot see the blade making contact such as in areas of dense growth. d. Keep the blade sharp. A dull blade increases the chance of bounce. e. Avoid feeding the blade too rapidly. The blade can bounce away from material being cut if the blade is fed faster than its cutting capability. f. Cut only from your right to your left. g. Keep your path of advance clear of material that has been cut and other debris. PAGE 39
OPERATION 3. How you can maintain the best control: a. Keep a good, firm grip on the unit with both hands. A firm grip can help neutralize bounce. Keep your right and left hands completely around the respective handles. b. Keep both feet spread apart in a comfortable stance and yet braced for the possibility that the unit could bounce. Do not overreach. Keep firm footing and balance. MAINTENANCE OF BLADE Check the blade and the fasteners for looseness, cracking, or bending. 1. Keep the end corner sharp. 2. Round the root of the edge, using a round file. 3. Do not use water when using a grinder. WARNING It is recommended that filing should be done by professionals. TRANSPORTING THE UNIT When you finish cutting in one location and wish to continue work in another spot, turn off the engine, lift up the unit and carry it, paying attention to the blade. Never forget to place the protective cover over the blades. When transporting the unit over long distances, detach the blade and fasten the unit by ropes. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 40
OPERATION WARNING This product is equipped with extremely sharp blades, and when used improperly these blades can be extremely dangerous, and improper handling can cause accidents, which may in turn lead to serious injury or death. For this reason, you should always be careful to follow the following instructions when using your trimmer. Never hold the trimmer in a way in which the blades are pointed towards someone else. Never allow the blades to come into proximity with your body while the engine of the trimmer is in operation. Always be sure to turn off the engine before changing the angle of the blades, removing branches which have become stuck in the blades, or at any other time when coming into close proximity with the blades. Always wear work gloves made of leather or sturdy material when using the trimmer. Always place the blade cover provided with the trimmer over the blades when not in use. Falling branches may fall onto the face or into the eyes, resulting in injuries, scratches, and cuts, and for this reason you should always be sure to wear a helmet and face protector when using your trimmer. PAGE 41
OPERATION Z NOTE The thickness of branches, which may be cut using this trimmer, is limited to up to approximately 3/16" (5 mm). Never try to cut branches thicker than this, as doing so may result in damage to the trimmer. WORKING WITH THE HEDGE TRIMMER 2) 1) 2) (1) Safety Rod (2) Adjustment mechanism 1. Stop the engine 2. Fit the protective cover on the blades 3. Pull out the safety rod (1). 4. Turn the adjustment mechanism to adjust the angle of the hedge trimmer head. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 42
OPERATION WORKING WITH THE POLE PRUNER CHECKING OIL SUPPLY After starting the engine, run the chain at medium speed and see if chain oil has scattered off, as shown in the figure. 1) Chain oil Z NOTE The oil reservoir has a capacity sufficient to provide about 40 minutes of cutting time (when set to deliver the minimum flow rate, or about as long as you ll get from a tank of fuel). Be sure to refill the oil tank every time when refuelling the saw. PAGE 43
OPERATION ADJUSTING OIL FLOW RATE WARNING Never fill the oil reservoir nor adjust the oiler with the engine running. Z NOTE An increase in bar oil flow rate will speed oil consumption, requiring more frequent checks on the oil reservoir. To ensure sufficient lubrication, it may be necessary to check the oil level more frequently than at fuel tank refills. The guide bar and chain are lubricated automatically by a pump that operates whenever the chain rotates. The pump is set at the factory to deliver a minimum flow rate, but it can be adjusted in the field. A temporary increase in oil flow is often desirable when cutting things like hardwood or wood with a lot of pitch. WORKING WITH THE POLE PRUNER Adjust the pump: 1. Stop the engine and make sure the stop switch is in the OFF position. 2. Place the unit on its side with the oil reservoir up. (1) Oil tank (2) Chain cover CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 44
OPERATION WARNING The oil flow adjusting screw must be pressed in slightly in order to turn. Failure to do so could damage the pump and screw. 3. With a screwdriver, push in the oil flow rate adjusting screw and turn in the desired direction (there are three incremental settings): (a) Clockwise-decrease lubrication (b) Counter clockwise-increase lubrication (c ) Middle WARNING Always wear work gloves made of leather or sturdy material when using the polesaw. Falling branches may fall onto the face or into the eyes, resulting in injuries, scratches, and cuts, and for this reason you should always be sure to wear a helmet and face protector when using your polesaw. PAGE 45
TRANSPORTING THE STRIMMER When you finish using the strimmer in one location and wish to continue work in another spot, turn off the engine, lift up the unit and carry it, paying attention to the hot engine. Be careful not to tip any fuels during moving to another spot. When transporting the unit over long distances, ensure the engine is cool to the touch, and that any fluids cannot spill out. 49 MAINTENANCE BLADES When refilling the tank or resting, it is often a good idea to use the time to oil the cutting blades. If a gap exists between the upper and lower blades, follow the procedure below to adjust them so that they fit more closely together. (1) Upper blade (2) Lower blade 1. Loosen lock nut (A) as shown in the diagram. 2. Tighten screw (B) fully, and then turn one-third to one-half of a rotation backward. 3. While holding onto the screw to keep it in position, tighten the lock nut. 4. Check to make sure that the flat washer (C) is loose enough so that it may be turned by pressing on it with a finger. PAGE 49
MAINTENANCE Z NOTE Screwing in the screw too tightly may make it impossible for the blades to move. Conversely, not screwing in the screw tightly enough may make the blades of the trimmer feel dull and cause leaves and branches to become caught in the blades of the trimmer. TRANSMISSION The reduction gears are lubricated by multipurpose, lithiumbased grease in the transmission. Supply new grease every 25 hours of use or more often depending on the job condition. When adding lubricant, use a grease gun to insert lubricant into the three grease nipples located on the transmission. 1) Grease fitting CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 50
MAINTENANCE Make sure to maintain the machine in good working condition, carry out regular maintenance of the machine after each use and before storage. Any breach in adequate maintenance reduces the life of the machine and increases the risk of breakdowns and accidents. To preserve the security system throughout the life of the machine, it is important to perform maintenance and proper cleaning, DO NOT use non-compliant replacement parts and DO NOT dismantle the machine yourself or change the security features. Make sure that the engine has stopped and is cool before performing any service to the machine. Contact with moving cutting head or hot muffler may result in a personal injury. AIR FILTER The air filter, if clogged, will reduce the engine performance. Check and clean the filter element in warm, soapy water as required. Dry completely before installing. If the element is broken or shrunk, replace with a new one. Air filter PAGE 51
MAINTENANCE FUEL FILTER If the engine runs short of fuel, check the fuel cap and the fuel filter for blockage. Fuel filter SPARK PLUG Starting failure and misfiring are often caused by a fouled spark plug. Clean the spark plug and check that the plug gap is in the correct range. For a replacement spark plug, use the correct type. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE: PAGE 52
MAINTENANCE CLEARING BLOCKAGES If waste gets stuck and causes blockage around the intake air cooling vent or between the cylinder fins, it may cause the engine to overheat, and that in turn may cause mechanical failure. Make sure it is cleaned regularly. Intake air cooling vent (back) Cylinder AFTER EVERY 100 HOURS OF USE MUFFLER CLEANING 1. Remove the muffler, insert a screwdriver into the vent, and wipe away any carbon buildup. Wipe away any carbon buildup on the muffler exhaust vent and cylinder exhaust port at the same time. 2. Tighten all screws, bolts, and fittings. 3. Check to see if any oil or grease has worked its way in between the clutch lining and drum, and if it has, wipe it away using spirits. PAGE 53
