1 AMRA/MAP TECHNICAL COMMITTEE SPRING MEETING AGENDA DePaul University O Hare Campus 8770 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue, Room 206 Chicago, IL May 14 15, 2014 Wednesday, May 14, PRESENTATION Service Repair Tips TPMS Sensors and Systems Common TPMS Repair Issues explained! Tyson Boyer, DILL Air Controls; Scot Holloway, Bartec; Jim Chen, ATEQ 113 million vehicles in operation with TPMS x 4 5 sensors Industry trending to rubber valve stems and lighter sensor bodies: easier to balance wheels TPMS, Seat Belts and Air bags only government MANDATED safety devices for vehicles Direct and indirect TPMS systems still in use Three types of direct system sensors Direct = Vehicle specific Multi application= Multiple vehicle programs pre loaded Programmable = (clone able) to most vehicles Service issues: Test Before You Touch! (TBYT) Check before ANY tire/wheel service; maybe ANY service Mounting/Balancing most common auto service job in most shops Lots of TPMS service opportunities available Always determine and mark physical location of sensor Use tool to print TPMS report whenever available ALWAYS perform a relearn after any TPMS service including tire rotation Use tool to print TPMS report Relearn processes moving toward OBD resets; Tools will need frequent updates Cloning / copying sensors may not clear any DTCs No room for improper parts tools service procedures in this safety system Simplicity and consistency are best practices for a shop s TPMS program Pick (1) TPMS program and TRAIN to it (singular parts line/source) Non OEM spec wheels/tires WILL require consideration of applicable TPMS components Once valve stem corrosion begins; TPMS functionality will never be the same Proper torque and calibrated torque tools are critical to TPMS service NEVER alter TPMS components to fit an application Shops should warn customers about consequences of using tire sealants or OE Mobility Kits
2 1. PRESENTATION Service Repair Tips TPMS Sensors and Systems(cont.) New NSF Protocol for TPMS Sensors Tyson Boyer, DILL Air Controls; Scot Holloway, Bartec; Jim Chen, ATEQ The National Sanitary Foundation (NSF) has recently developed a protocol for voluntary certification of TPMS sensor replacement parts NSF aims to help ensure that various auto parts form, fit & function match OE quality NSF website offers certified parts lookup tool S TPMS Taskforce commissioned to: Develop DRAFT MAP Inspection Checksheet criteria for evaluating TPMS indicators Develop DRAFT MAP Inspection Checksheet for evaluating TPMS system & components Develop DRAFT UICS conditions re: Valve stem corrosion AMRA to develop e UICS glossary definitions for: COPY; RE LEARN; RESET 2. PRESENTATION Completing the Repair Is a scan tool required to initialize, code or even program the component after installation? You may not be ready to complete the repair in your shop! George Lesniak, CARQUEST Technical Institute (CTI) Various simple components require electronic tools/equipment/information to return to full/proper operation after replacement Scan tools may be required: o After an oil change service to reset a service reminder indicator o After decarbonization services to restore driveability Not all scan tools are capable of performing/completing procedures OE terminology may be interchangeable e.g. reset/relearn/initialize Programming/re flashing analogy = (blank hard drive requiring software install) Initialization/registration analogy = (handshake/introduction of new component to vehicle s module) Coding (Euro prolific concern) = (Many codes embedded in universal part; must match proper code to car s module) Relearn; reset = (Tell car s module a new part is installed; car must un learn changes in adaptive strategies relative to worn component) Reprogram/Re flash analogy = ( Windows software update) If non exact OE part# battery is installed, some vehicles may require battery registration and coding to vehicle to prevent damaging other charging system components Techs MUST READ all service info, wiring diagrams, TSBs, etc. to determine if other procedures are required to complete the repair(s)
3 3. UICS COMPONENT ADDITIONS/EDITS Inner Socket Assemblies Socket Assemblies, Steering now cross referenced to Tie Rod Ends in e UICS Low Friction Steering and Suspension Components Topic sent to Steering & Suspension; Tires & Wheels Sub Committee for review and UICS recommendations at next meeting 4.
