ADVANCED FIRE SUPPRESSION TECHNOLOGIES STORED AFFF BULK SYSTEM 150/250/350 S REV(30/09/2015) Page 1 of 25
Introduction The Advanced 150/250/350 AFFF Bulk fire suppression system is a pre-engineered, fixed nozzle system for protection of off-highway and equipment, power packs, lubrication rooms and oil storage area s. Each system application will need to be designed specifically for equipment intended for protection. Typical applications include surface mining equipment, underground mining service bays, forest harvesting equipment, land fill equipment, and construction equipment. The Advanced 150/250/350 AFFF bulk system consists of three major components; a container to store the AFFF extinguishing agent; an actuation system operated manually or automatically and an agent distribution system which delivers the agent from the tank through the hydraulic hose and fixed nozzles to the hazard area. The system described in this manual is a fire suppression system and is not designed or intended to extinguish all fires, particularly when unusual amounts of combustible materials and ample oxygen supply are present. It is extremely important that supplement firefighting equipment be available in case the system does not totally extinguish a fire. If an automatic fire detection and actuation system has not been supplied or has been disconnected, the system actuation and discharge will not occur unless the fire suppression system is manually operated. Reliance on a manual release system usually results in a slower reaction to fire. Means to automatically shut down the vehicle must be added to manual or disconnected automatic system. 3 How The System Operates Discharge of the Advanced Bulk system manually is initiated from an automatic or manual actuator. Automatic operation or manually depressing the actuator plunger punctures the seal on the cartridge. The released pressure is transmitted through the actuation line. A safety relief valve in the actuation line prevents too high an actuation pressure build up. When pressure from the actuator manual/automatic, reaches the valve head, it opens the piston situated in the valve. This in essence will allow the pre-pressurized system to discharge through the separate pipe network situated through the equipment. In Case Of Fire When a fire starts, the way the operator reacts is very important. As soon as the operator is aware of a fire, he should do the four following things: 1. Once the machine is safely stopped, Turn the machine off and set the brake. 2. Quickly actuate the AFFF 150/250/350 Bulk tank system by pulling the safety ring pin on the manual/automatic actuator and strike the red knob. 3. Evacuate the Vehicle 4. Stand by at a safe distance with a fire extinguisher. CAUTION! The system described in this manual is a fire suppression system and is not designed or intended to extinguish all fires, particularly when unusual amounts of combustible materials and ample oxygen supply are present. It is extremely important that supplement firefighting equipment be available in case the system does not totally extinguish a fire. S REV(30/09/2015) Page 3 of 25
Actuation Gas Cartridge( P/N:ASEX - V20) The Actuation gas cartridge, ASEX Nitrogen Cylinder - Part No. ASEX - V20 is used in the Advanced Bulk remote actuators, either manual or automatic. The cartridge is a sealed pressure vessel containing nitrogen gas under pressure. When the pin in the remote manual or pneumatic actuator punctures the cartridge seal, the gas flows to the actuator, the gas will follow the actuation line to the pneumatic control head situated on top of the cylinder, when desired pressure is met the piston will open allowing the agent to discharge through a separate discharge hydraulic hose network. Included on the cartridge is a gauge for visual inspections. Part Number:ASEX - V20 Manual Actuators(P/N: ASEX - V21) 2000PSI Nitrogen Bracket - Part No. ASEX - V21 is available for use with the right hand cartridge. Manual actuator(s) should be mounted near the vehicle operator and at a point on the vehicle that can be reached from ground level. Part Number: ASEX - V21 S REV(30/09/2015) Page 4 of 25
Manual Actuator Continued.. The manual actuator is designed with a red palm button (P/N: ASEX - V10) which is attached to a cartridge seal piercing pin (P/N:ASEX - V13) and a ring pin (P/N: ASEX - V08) to guard against accidentally piercing the cartridge seal. To initiate agent release, the operator must pull out the ring pin and strike the red palm button. The manual actuator must be located near the operators control station. P/N: ASEX - V13 P/N: ASEX - V08 P/N: ASEX - V10 Safety Relief Valve(P/N: ASEX - V40) A spring loaded pressure valve is used to prevent excessive pressure from building up in the actuation line. The valve is set to relieve at 290PSI(20bar). P/N: ASEX - V40 S REV(30/09/2015) Page 5 of 25
Nozzle(P/N: KIDDE-55211) The nozzle is a non-aspirating full cone agent discharge nozzle. A 45º barstock (P/N:KIDDE-55211) allows for a maximum area coverage of 1.5ft(0.5m) per nozzle at a range of 2ft(0.6m) or a diameter of 3ft(0.9m) per nozzle at a range of 4ft(1.2m). Nozzle(s) are available as a single nozzle with blow off cap. Blow off cap P/N: Part Number: KIDDE Nozzle Bracket(P/N: KIDDE-55210) Bracket is constructed of unpainted 1/4 (6.4mm) steel. They contain pre-punctured holes for the nozzle and pre-drilled holes for mounting.(p/n: KIDDE-55210) Part Number: KIDDE S REV(30/09/2015) Page 6 of 25
Check Valve(P/N: 53051) The 1/4 check valve (P/N: 53051) is installed in the actuation line between the manual/ automatic actuator and the pneumatic actuator on the connected fire suppression system. This check valve allows actuation pressure to flow to the fire suppression system, but does not allow pressure from other actuation devices to back up into the manual automatic actuator. P/N: S REV(30/09/2015) Page 7 of 25
Control Head The operating pressure is set between 150PSI and 2000PSI. The control head works on pressure, when pressure is applied it pushes up the piston inside the control head. Once this piston has reached the desired height, it will allow the pressure from the cylinder to make its way up the dip tube into the discharge line. After a discharge push puncture pin on pneumatic actuator(p/n:asex- V06) to maximum upward position and replace cartridge. CAUTION: Actuator may be under pressure following extinguisher discharge. Always bleed residual pressure through the vent check prior to disassembly. Control Head Continued.. 9 Design Parameters When used in conjunction with a dry chemical system (twin agent concept), the dry chemical system can be designed as either a standard discharge system or an extended system. An automatic detection system will be required. The twin agent fire suppression system should automatically perform the following functions- Engine shutdown, pressurized hydraulic tank and fuel tank if possible and a fuel shut off. As part of the total fire suppression system package, training for the personal and machine(s) operators must be conducted and documented. A maintenance contract allowing periodic service and maintenance at scheduled intervals should be included. Distribution Hose And Nozzles The distribution piping network is designed to properly distribute the AFFF agent to the foam nozzles. To survive the vibration found on mobile equipment, hose is used to distribute the agent. In the Advanced stored pressure system, hose sizes, maximum and minimum lengths, number of nozzles are all predetermined in the calculation phase. Blow off caps are supplied to be placed over the nozzle to prevent any grease and dirt that may block the nozzle or affect the nozzle spray pattern. 16 Recharge Procedure for Stored Pressure 150lt, 250lt & 350lt In the event of a system discharge, please follow the following steps to ensure that a complete and correct recharge is done. NOTE: After recharge make certain all fittings are secure and tight. Check all all hydraulic hoses for any defects, any defects found be sure to replace hydraulic hose, make sure to note hose replaced. Make sure the old service label is removed and a new label installed with correct information shown on label. In this procedure it will be explained how to do a recharge on a general system, when doing your own service you will need to adapt this procedure to the system you currently have installed on site(s). NOTE: These are pressurized vessels, Please take care when recharging the cylinder. Make sure head and fittings are tightly screwed in. Do not over pressure the cylinder. Only trained competent person(s) should be allowed to preform this procedure. Have the correct tools for the job, make sure the tools are in good working order and risk assessments for the current task are up to date, and are relevant for the task you are about to undertake. Be sure to inform people on or around equipment of your current task at hand, be sure to advise them on the risks involved with the task at hand. Under no circumstances are you to: A. Deviate from the recharge Procedure. B. Leave the machine unprotected (unless written permission from senior site personal has been given) C. Alter/Change the system, without any permission or change management documentation. The first priority in recharging is to determine the cause of the system discharge and to have the problem corrected before recharging the fire suppression system. In the event of system discharge, the vehicle must not be returned to service until the system has been recharged. The system must be recharged immediately after use. A fire condition can result in damage to fire suppression system and detection system components, as well as hose, nozzles and possibly other mounting hardware and support. Check all components for possible damage, including hose supports, hose, nozzles and all fitting connections. Remove the nozzles and inspect for damage, corrosion or obstructions. Clean and re-install, making certain they are aimed correctly. All blow off caps must be replaced after a discharge. S REV(30/09/2015) Page 16 of 25
Recharge Procedure 1. Remove all additional pressure in the system, this can be achieved by opening the cap on the schrader valve, once cap removed press the schrader valve in to remove all residual pressure. When all pressure is relieved, Continue with recharge procedure. Also once enough pressure is released, SLOWLY open the valve through the pressure vent on side of valve thread. See Image Inspect all hydraulic hoses, make sure all hoses are not damaged, if hoses are damaged, replace the hose. Make sure to note the replaced hose. 3. Check that all hydraulic hoses are secured and not obstructing any other system on equipment. 4. Remove valve head and down tube, check to see if there was a total discharge. 5. Check and clean valve head, Be sure to push the piston head in the valve down. Lubricate all O rings. 6. Open all manual actuators, lubricate all O-rings. Assembly manual actuators, remove safety pin. Strike Knob, if puncture pin drops, insert safety pin and place a lock wire seal. If puncture pin does not drop, replace manual actuator and make note on report on component replaced. Test new manual Actuator, remove safety pin, strike knob. Insert safety pin and place lock wire seal, if found in working order. 7. If the system discharged, the system will need to be blown out. The system can be achieved by connecting the discharge 1/2 hose to an air supply. Before blowing the system out, Make sure all blow off caps are on. After blowing, make sure all blow off caps are off. This will make certain there is no obstruction stuck in the distribution network. 8. Once the blowing procedure is complete, Continue with filling the tank with the required water and foam levels. See table at end. 9. Once desired tank is full to specifications, close the valve hand tight. 10. SET THE NITROGEN REGULATOR TO 1620Kpa. 11. Connect regulator supply hose to Schrader valve situated on the side of the cylinder using the correct hydraulic hose and fittings. 12. Charge the tank to 1620Kpa. 13. Close the the valve on the nitrogen regulator, remove charge line hose from tank. 14. Connect all hoses to the control head. 15. Your system is now Live. 16. Remove all tools and equipment. 17. Make sure all tools and equipment are counted for. 18. Inform operator/control room machine is ready for production. 19. Get service report signed off by competent person. 20. Any additional work done needs to be charged for, information to be supplied to supervisor. 21.
