8 Introduction 2.2 Appropriate Use The Martin SQC#2 Secondary Cleaner can only be used for cleaning a conveyor belt in the lower run of a conveyor belt system. For this, the scraper must be installed directly behind a head drum or a counter-pressure roller. It can be used on conveyor belts with a maximum belt width of 2400 mm and a maximum conveying speed of 5 m/s. Any other use of this product is deemed to be inappropriate. If you would like to use the MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner for any other purpose, please contact the Customer Service at Martin Engineering. We shall be pleased to assist you with the product configuration Conveyor belt systems with open transfer systems This installation manual describes the installation on a conveyor belt system with an encapsulated delivery system. For the installation on an open delivery systems different MARTIN installation consoles can be used. If installation conditions prove to be difficult, as is the case with impassable static components, or using the head drum as the tension point; Martin Engineering or a representative can help with the positioning or find customized solutions Use in EX-protection areas Under certain circumstance the MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner can also be used in potentially explosive areas. Contact Martin Engineering for more information on use in potentially explosive areas. The use of the scraper in a device protection category that is higher than that specified or under operating conditions other than those specified by Martin Engineering is not permissible or may be done only if Martin Engineering has granted its approval Operating limits of this product The use of the product mentioned here is only allowed within the specified specifications. Using it in a higher than specified equipment category or under operating conditions other than those named and previously specified by Martin Engineering is considered to be inappropriate use and can only be carried out if approved by Martin Engineering. 9 2.3 Safety at work Safety instructions, safety at work This installation manual should be read through completely before beginning work on the product or the customer's conveyor belt system. The operator has to make sure that all installation, inspections, and maintenance tasks are carried out exclusively by authorised experts. Introduction Basically, all work on conveyor belt systems and their accessories has to be done when the system is at a standstill. The instructions in the relevant installation manual, which describes how to shut-down the conveyor belt, must be adhered to. Upon completion of work, all safety equipment and protective guards should be reinstalled and put back into operation. Before commissioning the installation should be completed. Before the conveyor belt system can be used again, the flawless execution of all steps should be checked. All notes on installation and commissioning of the product should be observed Obligations of the operator The operator of this product should ensure that the personnel allowed to install, maintain and use this product are only those who Authorised personnel know the rules for safety and accident prevention, are instructed in the product s use, and have read and understood this installation manual. Personnel are considered to be authorised, that have necessary training, technical experience, knowledge on the relevant standards and guidelines and are also in a position to assess any task to recognise critical situation at an early phase. 10 Description of this product 3 Description of this product 3.1 Construction and function With its individually spring-loaded carbide blades, the MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner provides effective cleaning without damage to itself, the conveyor belt or any possible splices. The rubber dampers of the carbide blades act as dampers, but they also provide the necessary contact pressure for the MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner. NOTE A poorly or incorrectly installed product can disturb the conveyor process or to contamination of the conveyed bulk material. The operator is therefore responsible for implementing the necessary counter measures. When used with contaminants, Martin Engineering or a representative can help with the positioning or with customised solutions. 3.2 Spring tensioners The MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner and the Martin Engineering spring tensioners specifically developed for it give excellent results and conform to the general state of technology. 11 3.3 Type explanation The Martin SQC#2 Secondary Cleaner is available in three different versions: With aluminium cartridge for general use: Without aluminium cartridge for additional use in potentially explosive atmospheres where aluminium is not allowed, A mini version for cramped installation conditions. 12 Installation preparation 4 Installation preparation 4.1 Before installation Materials and tools required In addition to the standard tools, the following special instruments for may be needed for the installation and maintenance of the MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner. Lifting equipment with a capacity greater than the weight of the secondary cleaner (note the weight on the delivery note) Preparatory measures NOTE Pay attention to the following checks and carry them out completely. The freight forwarder is responsible for any transport damage! For any damage claims, please contact the freight forwarder. NOTE A poorly or incorrectly installed product can disturb the conveyor process or to contamination of the conveyed bulk material. The operator is therefore responsible for implementing the necessary counter measures. For applications involving dirt or impurities, please contact Martin Engineering or one of its representatives for advice. 1. At delivery check the following points: Is the delivery complete? Is the number of palettes / cases / containers the same as the number on the delivery note? Does all the transport packaging appear to be undamaged? Is there damage which may indicate that the contained products may be damaged? 2. If the delivery is not complete or there appears to be some transport damage, document and have the freight forwarder confirm. All damaged products should be saved for inspection. 13 3. Depending on the scope of the order, the delivery should contain the following parts: MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner. Two MARTIN SQC2 spring tensioning devices. Installation manual, plus warning and safety labels. 4. Missing or damaged parts should be reported to Martin Engineering or the authorised dealer. 14 Installation 5 Installation 5.1 Safety instructions NOTE Before beginning any work completely read this section! WARNING! DANGER OF INJURY! Body parts and/or clothing can be caught by rotating parts or by the moving conveyor belt. Before any installation or maintenance work is carried out, ensure that all power sources to the conveyor belt system and its accessories are switched off and secured against inadvertent reactivation. Use warning signs! WARNING! EXPLOSION HAZARD! In enclosed areas there is an increased risk of explosion when using a cutting torch or welding equipment! 15 5.2 Installation of the MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner Determining the installation position Determining the position of the shaft and the spring tensioner of the MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner must be done on both sides of the chute wall. The position is determined where the shaft of the MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner passes through the chute wall or where the spring tensioner is installed on the chute wall. Installation The MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner is delivered along with a spring tensioner. This is disassembled at the factory before delivery and is reassembled during the installation along with the Secondary Cleaner. The installation of the MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner and the spring tensioner is described in this installation manual. Following is an overview of the installation steps: No. Installation step Instruction 1 Determining the installation position M Installation of the scraper M Installation of the spring tensioner M Installation of the scraper M3682 Tab. 1: Installation steps It is possible to have different local conditions that require different working steps, which are shown below: Installation on an encapsulated delivery system Carry out the instructions according to Installation on an encapsulated delivery system with installation opening and support for the conveyor belt blade is already present. Carry out the instructions in Installation on an open delivery system Use the local resources to ensure that the dimensions for the installation are correctly maintained. 1. Prior to commencing installation, switch off and de-energise the conveyor belt and all accessories and secure them against being switched on inadvertently. The MARTIN SQC2 Secondary Cleaner should ideally be installed near a head drum or counter-pressure roller. The distance should not be more than 100 mm. 2. Determine the midpoint position of the blade shaft as describe below for the secondary cleaner. Martin Engineering GmbH 15 M3682UK-09/14

Mark the vertical and horizontal centre line of the driving drum to determine the midpoint (A) of the driving drum. The vertical line must run at right angles to the conveyor line. 4. Mark one position at a distance of 51 to 102 mm in the conveying direction from the point where the conveyor belt leaves the head drum (B). 5. At this position (C) draw a vertical line at right angles to the conveyor belt. 6. Take the measurements in Fig. 1 and mark the installation holes of the spring tensioning device (D). The secondary cleaner is heavy and can cause serious injury if it falls when being lifted or moved. Only lift the secondary cleaner using suitable lifting equipment or with several persons. Do not stand under suspended loads. 7. Make the cut-out and drill the installation holes as shown in Fig If the conveyor belt is not adequately supported at the contact point between scraper blade and conveyor belt, a conveyor belt support must be installed (see step 6 of After the installation ). 9. 18 Installation Installation of the spring tensioner 1. To install the bracket, it must first be dismantled from the spring tensioner and installed on the installation holes shown in Fig. 2. It is important to pay attention to the alignment of the bracket as shown in Fig Reinsert the spring tensioner in the bracket as shown. 19 4. Remove the shaft bracket clamp screw. Installation Fig. 5: Installation of the spring tensioner (3) Installing the scraper NOTE The following steps 1 and 2 are only necessary if it is a scraper with an aluminium cartridge. In scrapers without a cartridge, simply insert the blade shaft in the spring tensioner as described in step 3 and shown in Fig Remove the locking pin of the blade cartridge. 20 Installation 2. Then remove the blade cartridge. Fig. 7: Remove blade cartridge 3. Insert the blade shaft in the installation opening and in the spring tensioning device. NOTE Points 4 to 7 are only necessary if it is a scraper with an aluminium cartridge. For scrapers without an aluminum cartridge, proceed as shown in Fig. 13 with the alignment of the scraper blade. 4. 21 5. Tighten the locking screws on both sides of the spring tensioning device for the blade shaft by hand. Installation Fig. 9: Lock the blade shaft NOTE Tighten the locking screws so tight that the blade shaft does not twist when the blade cartridge is installed. CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE! Secure the safety bolts of the blade cartridge with the cable for scrapers with an aluminium cartridge. The blade cartridge must be secured before the shaft is inserted into the spring tensioning device. 24 Installation CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE! Damage to the belt edge and/or the cleaner blades can be caused by conveyor belt drift. Align the secondary cleaner by following the instructions below. NOTE The following illustrations are examples only and may differ from the actual secondary cleaner being used Centre the secondary cleaner below the conveyor belt Measure on both sides the distance (A) to (B) between the edge of the cleaner blades and the conveyor belt edge. The conveyor belt should protrude about 50 to 100 mm on both the left and the right sides. The cleaner blades should be positioned in the middle under the conveyor belt. 26 Installation Fig. 17: Tighten the locking screws Once all the measurements are correct and the secondary cleaner is adjusted, it can then be fixed in position; if not, it should be reinstalled or re-positioned Tensioning the secondary cleaner CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE! Damage can occur if the tension of conveyor belt blade on the conveyor belt is too high or uneven. Only tension the conveyor belt blade according to the guidelines and with dual spring tensioners, ensure even tension. 1. Before tightening, turn both threaded rods until the blades touch both sides of the belt. 2. When all blades touch the belt, tension the scraper against the conveyor belt by a half to full turn on both sides. Martin Engineering GmbH 26 M3682UK-09/14

28 Installation 5.3 Test run NOTE Read through this section thoroughly before starting any work on the conveyor belt scraper or the customer's conveyor belt system. 1. If the secondary cleaner lifts the conveyor belt, a pressure roller needs to be installed over the point of contact between the scraper blade and the conveyor belt at a distance of 50 mm against the travel direction to support the conveyor belt.. Carefully clean the outside chute wall on the operator side above the tensioning device. Attach the precautionary labels for conveyor products (Part no ) on the chute wall visible for the machine operator. Martin Engineering GmbH 28 M3682UK-09/14

29 CAUTION! FLYING PIECES! Tools or installation parts that are left behind can fall from a moving conveyor belt and cause slight injuries and property damage. After the installation first remove tools from the installation point and from the conveyor belt before turning the power on. Installation WARNING! DANGER OF INJURY! Body parts and/or clothing can be caught by rotating parts or by the moving conveyor belt. Before any installation or maintenance work is carried out, ensure that all power sources to the conveyor belt system and its accessories are switched off and secured against inadvertent reactivation. Use warning signs! 3. Remove all tools and fire protection covers from the installation area and conveyor belt. 4. Carry a one hour test run of the conveyor belt system. CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE! Never operate the conveyor belt scraper for more than 14 minutes on the running and unloaded conveyor belt when it is fully tensioned. There is the risk of the conveyor belt scraper getting damaged and/or the conveyor belt getting damaged by overheating. Operate the conveyor belt scraper with full tension against the conveyor belt only when it is running and fully loaded. 5. After the test run for an hour, shut down the conveyor belt system, switch off the power supply and secure it against being switched on again inadvertently. 6. Make sure that all securing parts are tightened. Tighten any loose connections. 7. Check the conveyor belt scraper for the following points: Wear and tear: a little wear and tear is normal, as soon as the wiper blades have got adjusted to the contour of the conveyor belt, this stops happening. Material accumulation: No material should have accumulated between the cleaner blades and on the return side. Martin Engineering GmbH 29 M3682UK-09/14

If the wear and tear or bulk material accumulation is excessive or other problems occur, refer to the information in section 4.7 Installation checklist or chapter 6 Troubleshooting. 5.4 Installations - Check-list If the test run of the conveyor belt scraper was not as expected, then the Installation checklist table could help to find and solve the problem. If there are still problems, refer to chapter 6 Troubleshooting : Installation checklist The secondary cleaner should be installed on both sides according to the measurements in section 4.2 et seq. The tip of the secondary cleaner scraper blade must touch the conveyor belt in an area between 51 and 102 mm after the vertical head drum centre line. The secondary cleaner may not lift up the conveyor belt (see Fig. 20). The scraper blades must be installed in the centre of the conveyor belt and/or head drum. 31 5.5 Placing the warning label or the warning pendant!! DANGER WARNING Installation Lock out and/or tag out all energy sources to conveyor system and loading system before performing any work on conveyor or conveyor accessories. Failure to do so could result in severe injury or death. Before starting work on conveyor systems and their accessories, switch off all power to the conveyor or loading system, and secure against unauthorised reactivation. Part no G MARTIN SQC2 Primary Cleaner For scraper with rubber damper: Turn the nut of the threaded rod until all blades touch the conveyor belt evenly. For tensioning, turn another half or full rotation. For scrapers with urethane dampers: Turn the nut of the threaded rod until all blades touch the conveyor belt evenly. 32 Maintenance 6 Maintenance 6.1 Safety instructions NOTE Maintenance inspections should take place at least once a week. Depending on operational conditions shorter maintenance intervals may be necessary. NOTE Read this section thoroughly before beginning any work. WARNING! DANGER OF INJURY! Body parts and/or clothing can be caught by rotating parts or by the moving conveyor belt. Before maintenance work is carried out, ensure that all power sources to the conveyor belt system and its accessories are switched off and secured against inadvertent reactivation. Use warning signs! 6.2 Weekly maintenance 1. Switch off the power supply of the conveyor belt and any other equipment and secure them against being switched on inadvertently. 2. Remove all material deposits from the cleaner blade and the main axle. 3. Check that all securing parts are tightened. Tighten loose connections, if any. 4. Check the tension of the scraper and tighten it if necessary. 5. If there are any signs of degrading operation, turn off the relevant part of the equipment. To receive support, contact Martin Engineering or a representative. DO NOT operate the equipment until the reason for the problem is known and a solution is found. 6. Check if the scraper blades are worn, damaged and parts missing. Martin Engineering GmbH 32 M3682UK-09/14

33 7. If the carbide inserts are worn, replace the blade according to the instructions in section 6.2. NOTE Check for wear at least once a month and adjust. The scraper blades should always have sufficient contact to the conveyor belt. Maintenance NOTE If there are any signs of degrading operation, turn off the relevant part of the conveyor belt system. To receive support, contact Martin Engineering or a representative. DO NOT operate the conveyor belt until the reason for the problem is known and a solution is found.. CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE! Do not let the scraper blades wear out beyond the wear line, it can cause serious damage to property. Inspect scraper blades regularly and replace in time! 8. Clean all warning labels. Replace any warning labels that cannot be read. Warning labels can be obtained from Martin Engineering or an authorised dealer. CAUTION! FLYING PIECES! Tools or installation parts that are left behind can fall from a moving conveyor belt and cause slight injuries and property damage. After the installation first remove tools and installation parts from the conveyor belt before applying power. 9. Remove all tools from the working area. 10. Switch on the conveyor belt. WARNING! DANGER OF INJURY! Body parts and/or clothing can be caught by rotating parts or by the moving conveyor belt. 34 Maintenance CAUTION! DANGER OF DAMAGE! Never operate the secondary cleaner for more than 15 minutes on the running and unloaded conveyor belt. 39 7 Troubleshooting 7.1 Safety instructions NOTE The secondary cleaner is subject to many different types of bulk materials and is often used in extreme working and environmental conditions. Therefore faults can occur in addition to those listed here. In this case, Martin Engineering or a representative can help with the positioning or customized solutions. Use the conveyor belt system only after the fault has been identified and rectified. Troubleshooting 7.2 Troubleshooting If, after the installation, there is an abnormally high wear and tear on the cleaner blade and/or the cleaning efficiency is too low, check the following points: Symptom Cause Corrective action High wear and tear on the cleaner blade. Inadequate cleaning efficiency or material accumulation. Damage or unusual wear pattern on the scraper blade. Noises or vibrations. The tension of the scraper against the conveyor belt is too tight. The scraper is fixed either too loosely or too tightly on the conveyor belt. The scraper blades are worn. Damaged conveyor belt or joints. Scraper is installed in the material flow. Different tension specifications of the spring tensioner. The scraper is fixed either too loosely or too tightly to the conveyor belt. Scraper blade not aligned at right angles to the conveyor belt. Decrease the tension. Please refer to the appropriate operating instructions for the spring tensioner for the values of tension. Increase or decrease the tension accordingly. Check scraper blades and replace where necessary. (See Weekly maintenance ). Check the conveyor belt joint(s) and repair or replace if necessary. Install primary cleaner in another position. 40 Storage, De-installation, Disposal 8 Storage, De-installation, Disposal 8.1 Storage 8.2 De-installation To maintain optimal functionality, Martin Engineering recommends storing the cleaners and the cleaner replacement blades made of urethane or with rubber components at room temperature and protected from direct sunlight. Depending on the type of urethane and the storage conditions, storage of between 6 and 12 months or longer under unfavourable conditions can degrade the functionality of the cleaner or cleaner blades. The best conditions for storage are at a temperature of +0 C to +30 C and 60% relative humidity. 8.3 Disposal De-installation is the reverse of the installation (refer to section , page 16). Assemblies and/or component parts of the Martin Engineering brush cleaner should be disposed of properly after use. Complete assemblies should be de-installed and separated according to material and disposed of. When disposing, all national and international waste disposal regulations have to be observed.
