MICHAEL S FIRE HALL NOVEMBER 12, 2011 It has been quite a few year s that we didn t have to contend with bad weather, so the turn out for the pizza party was spectacular! Over sixty FCCC members, friends and family attended the annual pizza party held at St. Michael s Fire Hall on Saturday, November 12, Plenty of pizza was ordered and salad and soda supplied to accompany the pizza was provided by the club. Not to be outdone, the club members brought so many desserts and snacks, one table was not large enough. There was even a cake to celebrant the club members with November birthdays! We all had a great time catching up with all our friends. Thanks to all the organizers of this event! 4 DECEMBER, 2011 FCCC NEWSLETTER PAGE 4 Winterize Your Ride Source: acdelco.com You can feel the chill in the air. Winter is on the way. You may have already broken out your sweaters, but you need to make sure your car is ready for the cold weather. Even in climates that don t see subfreezing temperatures or regular snow, the change in season is a great time for an inspection of basic maintenance items that affect performance. Have your AC Delco affiliated service center inspect or check the five following areas: Antifreeze A quick and simple check of the coolant will tell immediately how much protection it will deliver in cold temperatures. Antifreeze that is good to 0º F or -10º F might be fine for Arizona drivers, but not so for those in Minnesota. Make sure your antifreeze will do its job for your area s typical winter temperatures. Battery Very cold weather saps the cranking capability of a battery, and a marginal one that did the trick in the summer may not start your car when the thermometer drops. Have the battery inspected and replace it if the cold-cranking amps aren t sufficient it ll be easier in the long run than a couple of jump-starts on a freezing January morning. Belts and hoses Extremely cold temperatures can increase the chance of failure for worn or cracked belts and hoses. Use the change in season to have them inspected and replaced as necessary. Tires Cold temperatures can reduce the air pressure in tires, so making sure the tires are properly inflated can enhance fuel economy and prolong the life of the tires. Also, be sure to have the tread wear inspected. For drivers in areas that see ice and snow in the winter, adequate tire tread is often the difference between an easy commute and a tire-spinning ordeal or getting stuck. Wipers Winter brings precipitation, be it rain, snow, sleet or all of the above. Have your car s wipers inspected for normal operation and have the wiper blades replaced if they smear, streak or chatter. You ll also want a full reservoir of washer fluid for the winter. One more thing: If you live in a snowy area where the roads are routinely salted, have your car washed often throughout the winter. It will ward off rust and protect the finish of the exterior paint and wheels. What s that Sound? We ve all experienced that annoying squealing sound when stepping on the brakes (and sometimes without even touching them), but do you know what that sound really means? In most cases, it s an intentional warning that the disc brake pads are nearing the end of their useful life. Manufacturers, including AC Delco, build metallic indicators into the pads that contact the disc brake rotor when the pads material wears down, causing the squealing sound. When you hear it, it s time to have the brakes checked. Doing it soon after the sound begins can save a more costly repair later, as severely worn pads can damage the brake rotors. Struts and shock absorbers Most of us know that struts and shock absorbers are part of the suspension and seemingly do the same thing dampen the impact of bumps to help provide a smoother ride. Technically, they reduce excessive motion of the springs. Shocks can be found in the front and rear of the vehicle, while struts are typically only used on the front suspension. Typically, struts also serve as the pivot point for steering. Most modern cars and crossovers use a strut-type suspension, while most trucks and SUVs use shocks on the front suspension. An inspection of the shocks or struts should be carried out if: Your vehicle rolls more going around corners Your vehicle seems to dip excessively during braking Your vehicle seems to sway or bounce excessively on bumpy surfaces It s been more than 50,000 miles since their last inspection Ethanol Explained: The Facts of E85 Fuel Ethanol-based fuel, or E85, is an increasingly common alternative fuel that more vehicles can use instead of gasoline. The E85 name comes from the ethanol content, which is 85 percent (the remaining 15 percent is gasoline). An E85-compatible vehicle can run on a full tank of the E85 fuel, a full tank of gasoline or any mixture of the two. Ethanol is a domestically produced fuel derived from biomass. In the United States, that s mostly corn today, but technologies are being developed that allow ethanol to be made from a variety of plant sources, including grasses and other biomass by-products that don t impact food sources. Although you may see more E85 pumps at your local gas stations, your car can use it only if it was designed for it. A yellow gas cap indicates E85 compatibility and it s important to never fill up with ethanol if your car wasn t designed for it. Ethanol delivers about 70 percent of the energy of an equivalent gallon of gasoline, so the miles-per gallon performance when using E85 is somewhat lower than with gas. DID YOU KNOW T-Top does not refer to the shape of the roof, but rather it is short for Targa Top. The original design was a pure Targa but body flex demanded the center bar, discovered late in the design.
