The emergency shut-off valve (also called the fire valve, shear valve, or impact valve) must be closed when service or maintenance is performed on this equipment. Failure to do will cause injury or damage equipment or improper operation. Improper grounding voids the warranty. Do not operate the equipment as a dispenser unless it is completely assembled. 5 The SB-100 meter is the standard product for Bennett Dispensers. It can drive mechanical and electronic computers at any flow used in a basic gasoline dispenser. The SB-100 meter is a precision device built to maintain.3% accuracy for flow rates from 1.3 GPM (5 LPM) to 26 GPM (100 LPM). The SB-100 is a volumetric meter employing four pistons with seals and associated chambers. During the first year of use, the SB-100 meter's calibration should be checked upon installation, after 90 days and after 180 days in order to insure accurate measurement. After the break-in period, semi-annual calibration checks are all that is required. The SB-100 meter is a compact, lightweight unit built with the following main objectives: Excellent accuracy over a wide range of flows. Very good durability of performance and life up to 2 million gallons (7,500,000 liters) under laboratory conditions. Flexible mounting capability for layout in the dispenser (several product outlet positions). Minimal numbers of internal components to assemble or repair. Concept takes care of potential requirements for a meter: o o Adaptable to temperature compensation system Compatible with alternate fuels with up to 15% additives. Certain models available for higher fuel blends, contact factory for details. The positive displacement meter uses the general principle of four horizontal, single effect pistons equipped with "cup seals" moving in stainless steel sleeved cylinders and driving a vertical crankshaft. The crankshaft also of stainless steel is fitted with stainless steel connecting rod rollers and self-lubricated bearings throughout for minimum friction and maximum corrosion resistance. The patented SB-100 meter, patent number , is compatible with the Bennett T-75 Pumping Unit and is used in all of our electronic and mechanical dispensers sold worldwide and offers advanced features. At Bennett, we consider the meter the key to accurate product measurement and the fundamental source of information for the marketer s inventory systems. 7 Features and Constructions The meter is a positive displacement, four-piston device featuring a rotary distributor valve and "cup seal" pistons. Because of these features, the meter shows superior accuracy and repeatability by eliminating internal product slippage. The composition of the "cup seal" piston is such as to provide long life and low calibration drift. The SB-100 Meter features improved linearity allowing the calibration to remain within tolerance from 1.3 GPM (5 LPM) flow rate to 27 GPM (100 LPM). Currently the standard SB-100 Meter is compatible with up to 15% ethanol/methanol blends. The SB-100 can be manufactured of materials that are compatible with M85 and 100% methanol. The SB-100 is fully compatible with Methyl tert-butyl Ether (MTBE) additives to 15% concentrations. The SB-100 weighs only 10 pounds (4.7 kg) making service, installation, and handling very easy. 9 Theory of Operation The meter body (1) is cast aluminum with a gasket flange at the base for rigid mounting with other components using four to six screws. The cylinder covers (2, 3) are also cast aluminum with an O-ring seal and each is secured to the body by four screws. The calibrator cover (3) has a threaded shaft extending through it that limits the piston stroke to effect calibration. The shaft is sealed with an O-ring Note: Electronic calibration meters do not have the calibrator cover (3). Fastened to the top of the meter body is a cast aluminum collector housing (4), which can be assembled in several outlet positions. An O-ring and four screws make the seal and connection. Extending through the top of the collector is the output of the crankshaft that is sealed against leakage by a lip seal (5) held in place by a retainer (6) and three screws. 10 Basic Concept 2 The liquid to be measured enters the bottom part of the meter body (1) and pressure seals the rotating distributor (2) down on its mating surface through a diaphragm (3) and a countervalve (3). The pressure differential on the two sides of pistons 1 and 2 pulls the connecting rods (4) and makes the crankshaft (5) turn clockwise (top view). The crankshaft drives the distributor, which changes the distribution of liquid; piston 2 and 3 become active, then 3 and 4 and finally 4 and 1 before the cycle starts again. Each cylinder is closed with cover (6), one of them being fitted with a calibrating device (7-mechanical only) that allows adjustment of the stroke of the corresponding piston to get the exact value of the volume per revolution dispensed by the meter. The crankshaft and connecting rods are supported by self-lubricating bearings to minimize the wear and make the moving parts run smoothly. The crankshaft may drive a mechanical computer or an electronic pulser that can be fixed directly to the collector (8) which forms the upper part of the meter Figure 2 - Flow Diagram 6

11 Calibration Calibration The Bennett SB-100 Meter is built to maintain accurate measurement under normal operating conditions. The meter is a positive displacement device with rods and pistons, which require a break in period. The meter is calibrated at the factory using a solvent for safety purposes, and MUST BE calibrated after it has been installed. We strongly suggest recalibration of the meter after a 90-day break in period. The accompanying Meter Accuracy Curve is typical of the SB-100; 0.3% accuracy from 1.3 gpm (5 lpm) to 27 gpm (100 lpm). 0.3 Tenths of 1% Deviation Based on metering gasoline with an approximate viscosity of 30 SSU Flow Rate (gpm) Typical Meter Accuracy Curve 7

12 Calibration SB-100 Mechanical (M-Cal Option) Calibration Calibration of the SB-100 mechanical meter is achieved by adjustment of the dial and screw assembly on the cover attached to cylinder No.1. A clockwise adjustment decreases delivery while counterclockwise increases delivery. Total adjustment is +/- 15 cubic inches (+/- 240 ml) in minimum increments of 0.05%. Once the meter is adjusted to zero, a pin is inserted through the dial and into the cover and wire sealed through a cross drilled hole in the pin. Mechanical Calibration has been simplified by placing the calibration dial wheel on the piston cover face, out where it is easily accessible as shown in Figure 3. The minimum mechanical calibration adjustment is 0.05%. Each SB-100 meter is provided with the following calibration information: The dial adjusting cover has (+) and (-) arrows to indicate the correct direction to rotate the dial to either increase or decrease delivery. A self-adhesive metal label listing the minimum incremental adjustment is attached to the collector housing immediately above the adjusting dial. Figure 3 - SB-100 Mechanical 8

13 Calibration Calibration The dial cover has two pin hubs, one to the left of the shaft and one to the right. The seal pin may be inserted in either hub as shown in Figure 4. The smallest adjustment (.6 cu. in.) occurs when the pin is pulled from one side and inserted in the other side by moving the dial the least amount or half a hole. A 1.2 cu. in. adjustment is made by pulling the pin and turning the dial until the next adjacent hole aligns with the same hub and reinserting the pin. To calibrate the meter, follow this procedure: 1. Measure the actual delivery of the meter at fast flow in an accurate test measure. Dispense a minimum of 5 gallons (20 liters). 2. Cut and remove the existing seal wires and remove the seal pin. See Figure Turn the dial the necessary amount in the (+) or (-) direction to increase or decrease the quantity of fuel delivered. 4. Re-insert the seal pin in the desired pin hub. Figure 4 - Dial Cover and Seal Pin 5. Dispense 5 gallons (20 liters) of fuel to allow the meter to adjust to the new settings. Do not make any adjustments based on this delivery. 6. Make sure the meter is properly calibrated. Dispense another 5 gallons (20 liters) of fuel into an official test measure to check the calibration. EXAMPLE 1 1. A fast flow test at 11 GPM shows a +3 cu. In. reading in a five-gallon test measure. 2. Remove the existing seal and pin and turn the dial clockwise (-) five minimum adjustments (half holes) and reinsert the pin. 3 cu.in. = 5 half holes (-) CW.6 cu. in./adjustment 3. Test and Reseal. EXAMPLE 2 1. A fast flow test at 11 GPM shows a -2 cu. in. reading in a five-gallon test measure. 2. Remove the existing seal and pin and turn the dial counterclockwise (+) three minimum adjustments (half holes) and reinsert the pin. 2 cu.in. = 3 half holes (+) CCW.6 cu. in./adjustment 3. 14 Calibration SB-100 Electronic (E-Cal Option) Calibration Electronic calibration is a simple method to calibrate the meters in the dispenser. This method uses a mathematical algorithm in the software to account for meter wear rather than mechanical methods to limit the piston throw within the meter. This method also eliminates the parts associated with mechanical calibration in the meter. The result is a more symmetrical meter that will be intrinsically more accurate. Figure 5 - SB-100 Electronic Meter WARNING You must perform the E-Cal prior to dispensing fuel. If the E-Cal is not performed properly, the dispenser will produce a Calibration error. Prior to entering E-Cal Mode, you must slide a switch on the electronics to the right on the CPU Board to gain access. During normal operation, this switch is in Normal Operating Mode. If you attempt to dispense with the switch in E- Cal Mode, the dispenser will give you an Error. Notes: Before performing the calibration gallons of fuel needs to be dispensed from each meter. All programming must be performed including pricing. The E-Cal switch much be in calibrate mode. There are three types of Calibration. Refer to your dispenser operator s manual for electronic calibration instructions. Calibration procedures vary. Refer to the electronic calibration formula located below. Basic Calibration For test cans with a sight glass that is graduated in units of cubic inches or centimeters (milliliters). Operation Calibration For test cans with a sight glass that is graduated in percentage units. Direct Percentage Test can used only to verify calibration or used to zero or overwrite the E-CAL setting. 10

15 Troubleshooting & Repair Troubleshooting & Repair CAUTION: This section provides basic troubleshooting and component replacement procedures. It is not a substitute for technical training. Improper handling of equipment and/or improperly performing the included procedures could damage your DISPENSER. Symptoms The following section provides basic troubleshooting solutions based on the problem encountered with your meter. The troubleshooting procedures are written in progressive steps. As each step is completed, check the operation of the equipment. If the step repaired the problem, discontinue troubleshooting the symptom. Symptom Cause Solution The meter will not run-fuel flows A. Diaphragm is damaged A. Replace the Diaphragm out of the nozzle. B. Broken Rod B. Replace Meter The meter will not run-no fuel flows out of the nozzle. Nozzle is fuel open but delivers only 2 gpm (7 lpm) or less. Meter turns jerky at slow flow. Runs but hesitates. Meter calibrates high at fast flow. 16 Troubleshooting & Repair SB-100 Maintenance Troubleshooting & Repair The Bennett SB-100 is a precision instrument. Flatness tolerance specifications for distributor, valve and counter valve are 5 light bands (50 millionths of an inch). To ensure the continued integrity of the precision parts during the life of the meter, proper filtration before the meter is essential. Filters protect the meter, the pumping unit (if present), flow control solenoids, the nozzle, and ultimately the customer s automobile components. Filters should be replaced or cleaned on a regular basis or anytime the flow rate has dropped by a noticeable amount. Bennett dispensers or any dispensers using Bennett meters should NEVER be operated without proper filtration. Failure to maintain the filtration in the Bennett dispenser voids the warranty protection offered by Bennett. Note: Good filtration practices extends the life of the Bennett hydraulic components. CAUTION: Under no circumstances should the meters be exposed to filtration larger than 70 Micron. Figure 6 - Filter Replacement 12

All rebuilt boards have a part number prefix of RB. Please refer to the Distributor Policy Manual for program terms and details. The part number, description, and quantity required. Serial Number Identification The SB-100 meter can be identified by the date code on an adhesive metallic tag, metal Part Number/Serial Tag, or an adhesive white tag as shown in Figure 7. The serial number #3E shown in Figure xx consists of a number 1 to 12 to designate month of manufacture followed by a letter to designate year. For example 3E is the date code signifying manufacturing in March (month 3), 2003 (E = 2003). Current models use the white adhesive tag as shown below. Note: Letters I, O, and Q are not used.
