7 FRONT MATTER INTRODUCTION Thank you for your decision to purchase a passenger stair / crewstair assembly from WASP Inc. To ensure maximum performance of your equipment, it is mandatory that you thoroughly read and understand the operation & maintenance manual and follow its recommendations. Proper operation and maintenance are essential to prevent injury or damage and to maximize equipment life. Continuous improvement and advancement of WASP Inc. products may result in changes to your equipment that may not be reflected in this publication. WASP Inc. reserves the right to make product improvements at any time. Although great care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of this publication, WASP Inc. does not assume any liability for errors or omissions. Safety Notice Operate and maintain this equipment in a safe manner and in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal codes, regulations and/or laws, and in compliance with on-product labeling and these instructions. Make sure that all personnel have read this operation & maintenance manual and thoroughly understand safe and correct operating and maintenance procedures. Scope FRONT REAR This document outlines the specific design and performance requirements for the use of a WASP passenger stair / crewstair assembly. The word must in this document indicates a mandatory requirement. The use of should indicates a recommendation of that which is advised but not required. Always use the serial number of the equipment when requesting service information or when ordering parts. Early or later models (identification made by serial number) may use different parts, or it may be necessary to use a different procedure in doing a specific service operation. 11 FRONT MATTER SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Safe Operation Is The Operator s Responsibility Safety Alert Symbol This symbol with a warning statement means: Warning, be alert! Your safety is involved! Carefully read the message that follows. WARNING Operator must have instructions before operating the machine. Untrained operators can cause injury or death. W CAUTION This notice identifies procedures which must be followed to avoid damage to the machine. I DANGER The signal word DANGER on the equipment and in the manuals indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. D Safe Operation Needs A Qualified Operator For an operator to be qualified, he or she must not use drugs or alcoholic drinks which impair alertness or coordination while working. An operator who is taking prescription drugs must get medical advice to determine if he or she can safely operate a machine and the equipment. A Qualified Operator Must Do The Following: Understand the Written Instructions, Rules and Regulations The written instructions from WASP Inc. in this Operation & Maintenance Manual and machine signs (decals). Check the rules and regulations at your location. The rules may include an employer s work safety requirements. Have Training with Actual Operation Operator training must consist of a demonstration and verbal instruction. This training is given by your department supervisor before the equipment is operated. The new operator must start in an area without bystanders and use all the controls until he or she can operate the equipment safely under all conditions of the work area. Know the Work Conditions Know the weight of the materials being handled. Avoid exceeding the equipment load capacities. Reduce the size of load if handling heavy material. The operator must know any prohibited uses or work areas. Wear tight fitting clothing. Always wear safety glasses when operating, doing maintenance or service. WARNING The signal word WARNING on the equipment and in the manuals indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. 12 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS (CONT D) FIRE PREVENTION Use Safety Rules Read and follow instructions on the equipment and in the equipment s Operation & Maintenance Manual before operating. In addition to the design and configuration of equipment, hazard control and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, prudence and proper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance and storage of equipment. Check that the equipment is securely fastened to the tow vehicle (if required). Make sure all the equipment controls are in the NEUTRAL position before operating the equipment. Operate the equipment according to the Operation & Maintenance Manual. When learning to operate the equipment, do it at a slow rate in an area clear of bystanders. DO NOT permit personnel to be in the work area when operating the equipment. DO NOT modify equipment. DO NOT make any adjustments or repairs on the equipment while the engine is running. Maintenance The equipment may have components that are at high temperatures under normal operating conditions. The primary source of high temperatures is the engine and exhaust system. The electrical system, if damaged or incorrectly maintained, can be a source of arcs or sparks. Flammable debris must be removed regularly. If flammable debris is allowed to accumulate, it can cause a fire hazard. All fuels, most lubricants and some coolant mixtures are flammable. Flammable fluids that are leaking or spilled onto hot surfaces or onto electrical components can cause a fire. Operation Do not use the equipment where exhaust, arcs, sparks or hot components can contact flammable material, explosive dust or gases. Electrical Keep shields and guards in place. Replace if damaged. Check all electrical wiring and connections for damage. Keep the battery terminals clean and tight. Repair or replace any damaged part or wires that are loose or frayed. Battery gas can explode and cause serious injury. Use the procedure in the Operation & Maintenance Manual for connecting the battery and for jump starting. Do not jump start or charge a frozen or damaged battery. Keep any open flames or sparks away from batteries. Do not smoke in battery charging area. 13 FRONT MATTER FIRE PREVENTION (CONT D) Hydraulic System Check hydraulic tubes, hoses and fittings for damage and leakage. Never use open flame or bare skin to check for leaks. Hydraulic tubes and hoses must be properly routed and have adequate support and secure clamps. Tighten or replace any parts that show leakage. Always clean fluid spills. Do not use gasoline or diesel fuel for cleaning parts. Use commercial nonflammable solvents. Fueling Welding And Grinding Always clean the equipment, disconnect the battery, and disconnect the wiring before welding. Cover rubber hoses, battery and all other flammable parts. Keep a fire extinguisher near the equipment when welding. Have good ventilation when grinding or welding painted parts. Wear dust mask when grinding painted parts. Toxic dust or gas can be produced. Dust generated from repairing nonmetallic parts can be flammable or explosive. Repair such components in a well ventilated area away from open flames or sparks. Fire Extinguishers Stop the engine and let it cool before adding fuel. No smoking! Do not refuel a machine near open flames or sparks. Fill the fuel tank outdoors. Starting Do not use ether or starting fluids on any engine that has glow plugs. These starting aids can cause explosion and injure you or bystanders. Know where fire extinguishers and first aid kits are located and how to use them. Inspect the fire extinguisher and service the fire extinguisher regularly. Obey the recommendations on the instructions plate. Use the procedure in the Operation & Maintenance Manual for connecting the battery and for jump starting. Spark Arrester Exhaust System The spark arrester exhaust system is designed to control the emission of hot particles from the engine and exhaust system, but the muffler and the exhaust gases are still hot. Check the spark arrester exhaust system regularly to make sure it is maintained and working properly. The location and description of the safety signs are detailed in this section. Please become familiarized with all safety signs installed on the machine / equipment. A safety sign may contain more than one hazard panel and more than one avoidance panel. NOTE: See the numbered (See Safety Decals on Page 0.) for the location of each correspondingly numbered decal.. Pinch Point (P2804A) This safety sign is located six places on the passenger stair / crewstair. 2. Towbar / Stabilizer Requirements (P227463A) This caution sign is located two places on the passenger stair / crewstair towbar. CAUTION When the towbar is up - engage the stabilizers. When the towbar is down - disengage the stabilizers. I Maximum Speed Limit (H005627) This safety sign is located on the passenger stair / crewstair towbar. WARNING WARNING OVERSPEED HAZARD Do not exceed 5 mph (8 kph) when moving this equipment. W CRUSHING HAZARD Keep fingers and hands out of pinch points when adjusting and / or moving the equipment. D WARNING WARNING CRUSHING HAZARD Keep fingers and hands out of pinch points when connecting and disconnecting equipment. W WARNING CRUSHING HAZARD Before moving the tow vehicle / equipment, look in all directions and make sure no bystanders are in the work area. Do not allow anyone between the tow vehicle and the equipment when backing up to the equipment for connecting. W WARNING AVOID INJURY OR DEATH Use of an unapproved hitch or tow vehicle can result in loss of control, leading to serious injury or death. Tow vehicle and hitch must have the rated capacity to tow equipment. W WARNING Verify that the equipment is securely fastened to the tow vehicle before moving the tow vehicle and equipment. W WARNING AVOID INJURY OR DEATH DO NOT move equipment with occupants onboard. The distance between the aircraft door and the stair platform. W WARNING WARNING AVOID INJURY OR DEATH Before positioning stairs at the aircraft, confirm the aircraft is properly grounded. W IMPORTANT This Passenger Stair / Crewstair is only approved on the following aircraft models: MD-80, B , A39, A32, 757 I AVOID INJURY OR DEATH DO NOT adjust the stair height with anyone on the stairs. W WARNING AVOID INJURY OR DEATH When external power (0 V) is required, confirm the equipment it is being used for and where the extension cord is being placed is not in water. 31 GENERAL INFORMATION AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS NORMAL OPERATION Pre Operation Checklist WARNING CRUSHING HAZARD When any activities are performed under the stair or platform, the stair must be lowered onto the support tube holders or support tubes installed. W To check the hydraulic fluid level and tire operation, release the stabilizers. (See Stabilizers Setting And Releasing on Page 30.) 2. Check hydraulic fluid level. (See Hydraulic Fluid Level Check on Page 49.) 3. Check the tires and casters for ease of operation. 4. Install support tubes. (See Support Tubes Installation And Removal on Page 44.) 5. Check the battery connections for tightness and no corrosion is found. 6. Turn on the lights and check lights for proper operation. (See Turn Lights On on Page 29.) Check all the lights for proper operation. 7. Check all mounting hardware for all components associated with the passenger stair / crewstair. 8. Check the stair and platform to make sure there are no tripping or slipping hazards. 9. Check the sliding guardrails for proper operation. (See Sliding Guardrail Extension And Retraction on Page 30.) 0. Confirm the rubber pivot bumper operates freely.. Remove support tubes. (See Support Tubes Installation And Removal on Page 44.) 32 NORMAL OPERATION (CONT D) Towbar To Tow Vehicle Connect Towbar To Tow Vehicle: Figure 3 WARNING AVOID INJURY OR DEATH Pay attention to surrounding areas to prevent being crushed between two pieces of equipment. W WARNING P Rotate the towbar (Item ) [Figure 3] forward, to the extended position. 2. Position the tow vehicle hitch in front of the passenger stair / crewstair towbar. CRUSHING HAZARD Keep fingers and hands out of pinch points when connecting and disconnecting equipment. W Attach the towbar to the tow vehicle hitch. 4. Release the stabilizers. (See Stabilizers Setting And Releasing on Page 30.) WARNING AVOID INJURY OR DEATH Always have the stabilizers set when the stairway is not being moved. Disconnect the towbar from the tow vehicle. 2. Set the stabilizers. (See Stabilizers Setting And Releasing on Page 30.) Figure 4 P000 Rotate the light timer (Item ) [Figure 5] to the desired amount of time that lights are required. NOTE: Do not force the timer to zero (0), this may damage the timer. Passenger Stair / Crewstair Components Steps: Sixteen steps allow aircraft entering and exiting of passengers and crew. CRUSHING HAZARD Keep fingers and hands out of pinch points when connecting and disconnecting equipment. W WARNING Hydraulic Lift: Hydraulic lift allows the passenger stair / crewstair to be used on several different aircraft types. Stabilizers: Two stabilizers prevent the passenger stair / crewstair from moving when passengers / crew are using the stair. Electrical System: Battery powered electrical system provides lighting on the steps and lighting below the platform. Tires: CRUSHING HAZARD When any activities are performed under the stair or platform, the stair must be lowered onto the support tube holders or support tubes installed. W Four solid tires allow for ease of transportation of the passenger stair / crewstair. Towbar: The towbar connects the passenger stair / crewstair to a tow vehicle. WARNING AVOID INJURY OR DEATH Use of an unapproved hitch or tow vehicle can result in loss of control, leading to serious injury or death. The stabilizer springs are under heavy tension when the stabilizer is in the released position. D Release the stabilizers. (See Stabilizers Setting And Releasing on Page 30.)
