3 1. WARNING & SAFETY INFORMATION WARNING Failure to read this manual carefully before operation of equipment may result in personal injury, death and/or damage to equipment. SAFETY INFORMATION Various WARNING, CAUTION and NOTE procedures appear in the Operating and Maintenance Manual text which must be observed for personnel safety and proper equipment operation. The following explains each type of safety paragraph. Personnel operating and maintaining equipment must familiarize themselves with each particular paragraph s intent. WARNING paragraphs must be observed to prevent serious injury or death to the operator. CAUTION paragraphs must be observed to prevent damage or destruction of equipment or loss of operating effectiveness. NOTE paragraphs must be observed for essential and effective operating procedures, conditions, and as a statement to be highlighted. It is the responsibility and duty of all personnel involved in the operation and maintenance of this equipment to fully understand the WARNING, CAUTION and NOTE procedures by which hazards are to be reduced or eliminated. Personnel must become thoroughly familiar with all aspects of safety and equipment prior to operation or maintenance of the equipment. Operating and Maintenance Instructions and layouts shall be posted at control equipment with a second copy on file. All persons who may be expected to inspect, test, maintain or operate foam equipment shall be properly trained in accordance with latest industry standards in the functions they are expected to perform. Williams Fire & Hazard Control, Inc. recommends the equipment be inspected and tested after installation by qualified personnel to meet the approval of the authority having jurisdiction. These tests shall be adequate to determine the system has been properly installed and will function as intended. Where conditions permit, flow test shall be conducted to ensure that the hazard is fully protected in conformance with the design specification. The services of a qualified field engineer are available to perform this testing and inspection. If initial start-up inspection and tests are carried out by persons not employed or contracted by Williams Fire & Hazard Control, Inc., copies of the inspection test reports should be forwarded to Williams Fire & Hazard Control, Inc. 2
4 NOTE: ALL INSTALLATION, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL SHOULD READ ALL MANUALS AND INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE INSTALLING AND/OR ATTEMPTING TO USE THIS FOAM EQUIPMENT. 3
5 2. INTRODUCTION Williams BTM monitor nozzles combine proven performance and reliability with a simplified design that provides ease of operation/maintenance for fire protection personnel. The fundamental and field-proven design maximizes reliability during operation. This proven technology is currently used throughout the world to protect fleet aircraft for government and industry as well as tank farm and process facilities for the hydrocarbon and petrochemical industries. A. This manual has been prepared as a reference guide for the new as well as experienced fire protection personnel. Read this manual and all other equipment manuals before attempting to operate the system. B. Williams BTM monitor nozzles are engineered for dependability under specific operating conditions. The principles presented in this manual are limited to the facts related directly to the operation of this appliance, while the responsibility for the proper application of these principles belongs to the operator. C. Fire Protection personnel efficiency can be maintained by periodically reviewing the manual information, and by holding regular operational practice drills. D. Operator safety, and safety of all personnel around the unit depends on the operators care and judgment when operating or maintaining the unit. NOTE: All information and specifications contained in this manual are based on the latest information available at the time of printing. Illustrations are intended for reference use only. 4
6 3. EQUIPMENT OVERVIEW / DESCRIPTION Williams BTM monitor nozzles incorporate the following design features: 1. Medium volume, industrial grade master stream nozzle 2. Fully adjustable from straight stream to full fog pattern 3. Standard flow rates from 350 to PSI or Optional customer specified flow rates and pressures 4. Abbreviated style cast nozzle pattern control handles 5. Pattern adjustment lock bolt 6. 2½" (F)NST swivel inlet 7. Cast brass construction with satin finish NOTE: Williams BTM monitor nozzles are designed for mounting on portable or stationary monitors and to accommodate discharge flow rates from 350 to PSI. NOTE: Discharge flow is controlled by customer supplied valve located at the monitor inlet or within the fire water supply/foam solution piping. 5
7 4. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Instillation of Williams BTM monitor nozzles consists of the following: A. Apply a light coating of standard grade grease to nozzle inlet threads and rubber gasket or customer supplied monitor outlet threads. Secure the Williams BTM monitor nozzle to any customer supplied monitor capable of supporting the specified nozzle flow rate by threading the 2½" (F)NST inlet nut onto matching (M)NST monitor outlet threads. This may be accomplished through use of proper adapters if required. B. Apply an appropriate amount of standard grade grease to the nozzle outer sleeve through the grease fitting provided and distribute grease by working nozzle sleeve from full fog to straight stream pattern and back several times (loosen pattern lock bolt prior to attempting pattern adjustment if required). C. Adjust nozzle outer sleeve to desired pre-set pattern and tighten pattern lock bolt just enough to hold sleeve as required. NOTE: A pressurized water/foam solution source capable of supporting the design discharge flow design inlet pressure of the Williams BTM monitor nozzle is required to produce the appropriate nozzle performance and discharge range. 6
8 5. START UP Start up procedures for Williams BTM monitor nozzles consists of the following: A. Assure proper mounting of the Williams BTM monitor nozzle monitor outlet threads as outlined in the INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS elsewhere in this manual. B. Assure pressurized water/foam solution source is available capable of supporting the design discharge flow design inlet pressure of the Williams BTM nozzle to produce the appropriate nozzle performance and discharge range. C. Water/foam solution flow testing of the Williams BTM monitor nozzle is recommended to assure proper nozzle performance and discharge range. WARNING: Care must be taken to assure test discharge flow is directed away from occupied areas and equipment to prevent serious injury to personnel and/or damage to equipment. 7
9 6. MAINTENANCE Williams BTM monitor nozzle maintenance typically consists of the following: A. Periodic inspection to assure nozzle inlet connection is tight. B. Periodic inspection and operation of the nozzle pattern adjustment to assure free travel of the nozzle outer sleeve. C. Periodic lubrication of the nozzle outer sleeve. Lubrication is recommended at least twice a year and more often as operation and environmental conditions dictates. WARNING: Care must be taken to assure test discharge flow is directed away from occupied areas and equipment to prevent serious injury to personnel and/or damage to equipment. 8
10 7. TROUBLESHOOTING A. WATER LEAKAGE AT NOZZLE INLET CONNECTION 1. Loose nozzle inlet connection at monitor discharge outlet. 2. Defective inlet gasket. B. INSUFFICIENT DISCHARGE RANGE 1. Supply water/foam solution inlet pressure below design requirement. 2. Supply water/foam solution control valve not completely open. 3. Nozzle K factor set too high. 4. Monitor/nozzle elevation too low (optimum range elevation ). C. INSUFFICIENT DISCHARGE FLOW 1. Supply water/foam solution inlet pressure below design requirement. 2. Supply water/foam solution control valve not completely open. 3. Nozzle K factor set too low.
