4 STATE OF PLAY Flashback. Swede Joel Eriksson (pictured) was the dominant driver during the season s penultimate weekend at Spielberg. The campaigner had his strongest weekend this season at Austria, having clinched two pole positions, two victories and a second place. An absolutely fantastic feeling, and I m so thrilled to finally be back on top, said Eriksson who had not won a single race since the middle of June. We ve been working so hard to turn this around. In round one Callum Ilott won in front of Eriksson and Maxi Günther, but in race two the Swede was the measure of all things. Eriksson defended his lead from lights to flag in both Sunday races, but only after fending off British championship leader Lando Norris in two dramatic scraps over victory with the duo putting on a particularly electrifying show as they fought wheel to wheel at well over 220 km/h in the final race of the weekend. Russian Nikita Mazepin, who came second once and third once, celebrated two podiums in Austria. Japanese Tadasuke Makino, having finished race three in third place, clinched his first podium this season. Status quo. After 27 of 30 races Carlin campaigner Norris (pictured) has 311 points to his tally. With that, the McLaren-Honda Junior is 72 points ahead of Günther, his closest rival. However, with 75 points yet to be awarded at Hockenheim, the German s chances of still intercepting Norris are small. As long as it s still mathematically possible I m going to give my all, says the 20-year-old. But I m realistic enough to know that it s going to be tough because it s not only up to me to win the title. Günther, though, is only six points ahead of Spielberg star Eriksson who is aiming to secure position two in the standings. Norris is the front runner in the classification as well. Here his advantage over his only remaining rival for the title, Indian Jehan Deruvala, is 74 points. The teams table is headed by Prema Powerteam. With 129 points yet to be awarded Carlin still has chances of winning the championship as well. Looking ahead. As in the previous seasons, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship is again holding its season finale at Hockenheim. In 2016 all three race wins went to the current champion and Williams Formula 1 driver Lance Stroll. Three other subsequent drivers in racing s top category -- Antonio Giovinazzi, Esteban Ocon and Max Verstappen clinched F3 victories at the Motodrom in Germany s Baden region. The kilometre track should particularly suit Maximilian Günther (pictured) and Joel Erik sson, who finished second here trailing Stroll last year. s Joey Mawson and Mick Schumacher have fond memories of Hockenheim as well. Both won in Formula 4 at Hockenheim in FACTS AND FIGURES +++ Neither the teams nor the drivers championships have been decided before the Hockenheimring round. Prema Powerteam is leading the team championship standings, however Carlin is still in the running for the title. Lando Norris (Carlin) finds himself in the best position to win the title of FIA F3 European Champion, but Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam) still has a small chance to beat him. +++ The battle for the 2017 rookie championship remains thrilling. With three races to go, Lando Norris and Jehan Daruvala (Carlin) can still claim this year s title. +++ Due to Hockenheim also hosting the DTM season finale, the usual weekend timetable had to be adjusted for this event. Free practice and both qualifying sessions take place on Friday, race 1 and race 2 on Saturday and race 3 on Sunday morning. +++ There are no penalties carrying over from the previous event. +++ Eurosport magazine s FIA Formula 3 European Championship episode on Spielberg: Wednesday, 18 October, 01:30 a. m.
