2 CARPENTER CO. WEIGHT ESTIMATION GUIDE INTRODUCTION The following pages are Carpenter Co. s updated Weight Estimation Guide. There are many new sizes listed in this book, and many of the weights have been estimated. Please remember this is only an estimation guide for the amount of Rely product needed to fill tires. This estimation was calculated using a mathematical formula which is based on the outside dimen sions of the tire and thus includes tread and sidewall thicknesses. We emphasize again: this is an estimation guide because tire cavities are not identical. There are no standards on cavity size in the industry. This is the reason you can proc ess ten tires of the same size and brand and each tire could have a different filled weight. There are also other reasons tires hold various amounts of Rely product. For example stretch ing the tire casing can lead to a different weight. Any new bias tire can stretch from 5% to 10%. Radial tires will stretch as well, although not as much. Determining which tires will stretch and to what extent depends also on whether the tire is new, used or a retread. Each of these types will have a different amount of stretch, therefore each will take a different amount of Rely product to reach the desired pressure. However, the correct way to determine the exact amount of Rely product a tire requires to be flat proofed is to weigh the mounted wheel and tire before and after it is filled to get the amount of product used. If you have any questions, please call your Carpenter Co. representative. Care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of the weights in Carpenter s Rely Weight Estimation Guide. Carpenter is not responsible for any loss or damage that may result from its use. No allowance has been made for filled weight variations (more or less) which occur between different tire manufacturers. The weights for some tires have been revised to reflect a more accurate amount of fill. Although tires will take various amounts of fill we believe this is the most current listing of new sizes and weights available to the industry today. Assumptions to the accuracy of Carpenter s Rely Weight Estimation Guide: The weights shown in the charts assume the following; 1. Tires are being filled with Rely T-25. The use of other brands and types of product will differ in weights. 2. The tires are mounted on the standard width rims listed. (Use of over or under sized rims will require more or less material respectively.) 3. The tires are pressurized to 100 percent of the maximum recommended pressure for each tire. This can be found on the sidewall of the tire, or the Tire and Rim Associations Inc. yearbook. 4. The diameters and section widths of the tires to be filled are in conformity with those specified by The Tire and Rim Association Inc. Yearbook. (Tires which do not conform to those standards may require significantly more or less material to fill.) 5. Tires being filled are new tires which have been pressurized (pre-stretched) with air to their maximum rated inflation pressure for 24 hours prior to being filled to allow the casing to grow. (It is not recommended to fill used tires.) 1

FORMULA The tire weight charts presented may be used to determine the approximate amount (weight in pounds) of Rely Products that will be needed to fill any of a wide range of standard size tires. For any tire not listed in the chart using the following formula may approximate the fill weight. Approximate Fill Weight = 2.47 x Section Height x Section Width x (Section Height + Rim Diameter) x SH = SECTION HEIGHT (OUTSIDE DIAMETER) RIM DIAMETER 2) The tire weight charts, as well as the above formula, will produce only approximate weights due to normal variances among individual tires with respect to internal volumes and final pressure. The exact weight of the tire fill can only be determined by subtracting the weight of each unfilled tire from the weight of the tire after filling. When using the Lincoln Powerfill 2000 series pump, equipped with pneumatic stroke counter, record the number of strokes shown. The fill weight of each tire can be approximated using the following formula. Fill Weight = Number of strokes x strokes = 9 lbs. For the Lincoln Pumps equipped with the digital counter, simply record the numbers shown. The digital counter reads in pounds not strokes. For the Intelli-Pumps equipped with the digital counter, simply record the numbers shown. The digital counter reads in pounds not strokes. When using Graco Pump, the fill weight of each tire can be approximate using the following formula: Fill Weight = Number of strokes x strokes = 8.4 lbs. Again, keep in mind that these formulas will only give an approximate weight. The most accurate method of determining the fill weight is to weigh the tire both before and after processing.. 24
