Four Brave members of our region took their vintage rockets to the SVRA Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio to see how they d do up against some of the best. Looking at the results, they did great! Mike Spence drove his 1972 Crossle to 2nd place in his class. David Bachman was right behind in his 1971 Royale, taking third in the same class. Cliff Von Hoene from Georgetown Indiana won his class in a 1972 Royale. Drivng David Baughman s Argo JM 19C, David and Bruce Domeck drove to a third in class finish in the enduro. An Audi R8 ALM and a Lola T-70 were in their class. Mike told me that the KYR guys were doing very well in their sprint race. At one point Mike and David were 1, 2. Going down the long straight, Mike July / 2011 was able to use a slower Lotus 23 as a pick to pass the leader. He and Dave zoomed by as the frustrated rival could only watch and wave. However on the very next lap the same guy pulled the same move on them to take the lead back. Now that s rac in! Ron Riffle Mike Spence and Geoff Hale head into thunder valley nose to tail. We have brought on a new sponsor for our autocross series, Ken Towery s Tire & Auto Care. At each of our events we ll be handing out VIP cards that offer you an assortment of discounts if you go by one of their stores. You will also start to eventually see their logo on our trophies, hats given out to winners of the street tire classes and awards sponsored at our annual awards banquet..including the illustrious Driver of the Year trophy. Points are being posted after each event on the website, so keep an eye on those points battles. On a different note, who knew how fun karting has become. However, I am a biased person due to owning/driving/tuning a shifter kart. After participating in this sport for enough years that would embarrass my Mom (extraordinaire glass artist that she is Ann Klem) I would have to say that karts are a blast. In years past it s safe to say that our membership meetings were about as lively as a turtle moving in the heat of day. Participation was low and pretty low on the fun index scale. Al Murrell said in a nutshell that we had to put the fun back into our meetings if we wanted participation to increase. At the beginning of this month we had our membership meeting at the brand new Bluegrass Indoor Karting track. I lost count, but I think we have about 13 or 14 folks show up. Wow! was one of my reoccurring of comments that night and we hadn t even started racing. Needless to say.we came, ownage (as Alex would say) was garnered and we established our own set of skid marks. We filled 1 ½ races, the smiles were abundant and passing never felt so good. Talks are underway to establish a league with the facility and to possibly tie in our autocross series with league for an overall champion.
