3 Page 4 Page 5 TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PORSCHE SUPERCUP Happy Birthday The Porsche Supercup is celebrating its anniversary. Even though it has not aged a bit. On the contrary its thrilling races in the exclusive framework of Formula remain as fresh as ever during each event. April 25, 993 was a beautiful spring day in Imola. It marked the start of one of international racing s great success stories at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. The Porsche Supercup was celebrating its premiere, delighting the tifosi in the stands with an exciting race. Uwe Alzen came out ahead. It was his first of a total of fourteen wins with the Porsche 9 in a series which enjoyed an impressive development right from the start within the framework of the Formula. In the premiere season, he had to concede the title to Altfrid Heger. But it was his turn the following year. Uwe Alzen is one of the drivers to whom the Porsche Supercup owes its popularity.

4 Page 6 Page 7 He is a fighter by nature, but also a wily fox and one of the best racing drivers to enter the world s fastest one-make race series. He was, however, not the most successful. That honor goes to Patrick Huisman, who posted almost twice as many wins. Mr. Supercup, as he was known, took four championship titles in a row from 997 to He opened the door for himself to other high-caliber racing series on the basis of this successful record. Success in the Supercup, he says, catapulted my career. The Dutchman drove in the Porsche Supercup for thirteen years. When he returned to the Supercup family in 2003, following a detour with the DTM, he A man for the record books: Patrick Huisman was determined to win his fifth championship title. But he missed it by a hair s breadth in He won four races that season, but at the end was edged out by teammate Alessandro Zampedri. A 25th Supercup victory has also eluded Huisman, who popped the victory champagne cork most recently in Spa-Francorchamps in The performance density has only increased over the years, with just tenths of a second separating the lap times of the leading drivers, says Huisman, citing two important reasons for the continuing appeal of Porsche s top one-mark race series. Although he is not entering the series this season, he doesn t exclude the possibility of a second return. The prospect of celebrating my 25th Supercup win some day definitely has a big appeal, he says. The teams have played a huge role in the Porsche Supercup s success story In addition to Uwe Alzen and Patrick Huisman, many other well-known racing drivers have helped write the success story of the Porsche Supercup. These include current Porsche factory drivers Jörg Bergmeister, Wolf Henzler, Marc Lieb, and Timo Bernhard, for example, as well as many prominent guest starters such as subsequent Formula world champion Mika Häkkinen, the winner of the Paris Dakar Ari Vatanen, and rally legend Walter Röhrl. But drivers like Richard Westbrook, Jeroen Bleekemolen, and René Rast have also left their mark on the Supercup asphalt. Besides Patrick Huisman, they are the only drivers to have successfully defended their Supercup titles. This season, René Rast will even have the chance to take home his third championship title in a row. The rapid development of the Porsche Supercup is not only due to its drivers. The teams have also played a huge role, as have Supercup old hands, like Walter Lechner and Franz Konrad, who serve as team bosses. They have spent years dedicating themselves to the series with steadfast commitment. The Porsche Supercup is the fastest and highest grade one-make race series worldwide, says Walter Lechner. It captivates audiences with its high power density and perfect positioning within the framework of the Formula. A contributing factor has also been its ongoing expansion into new countries. Its trip to Australia, which the Supercup caravan undertook from Stuttgart to Melbourne in 999 with 26 racing cars and 40 tons of luggage, was just the logical consequence of the series ever growing popularity. At its premiere in Abu Dhabi, the Supercup enjoyed a tale from the,00 Nights This successful premiere overseas whetted the appetites of all concerned. From 2000 to 2006, the world s fastest one-make race series followed Formula to Indianapolis and the legendary racing circuit on which Wolf Henzler left an especially lasting impression with his four victories. In 2007, the Supercup then moved on to Bahrain. Its 2009 schedule included the futuristic Marina Bay Circuit in Abu Dhabi for the first time a tale from the,00 Nights. But it is not only the Supercup that has undergone further development. Over the course of the years, the Porsche 9 has also become a sophisticated racing car which only the best drivers can hope to push to its limits. Based on the Porsche Carrera 2, the 9, which Uwe Alzen drove to victory in Imola in 993, was comparatively easy to control with its barely 275 horsepower. The current season s Porsche 9 GT3 Cup car, however, has a good 450 horsepower for drivers to master. That can get intense, especially on the labyrinth of curves comprising the street circuit of Monaco. The one constant over the years has been the huge fascination with the Porsche Supercup. And one thing is certain the success story will continue. In an interview with Inside, the head of Porsche Motorsport, Hartmut Kristen, explains what lies behind this success story and what talented young drivers need to have if they want to use the Supercup to launch their careers. The Supercup is an opportunity and a challenge: Hartmut Kristen Mr. Kristen, does the name Kévin Estre mean anything to you? Of course. A young Frenchman who won the rookie competition in the Porsche Mobil Supercup last year and who suddenly appeared this year in Daytona, Sebring, and Le Mans. How is that possible? It s very simple. He won us over with his skills and his performance. That s why we mentioned his name when customer teams asked us for tips on who should pilot their vehicles in these classic races. But Kévin Estre is not the first talented driver who is well on his way to using the Supercup to catapult his career. Nick Tandy did it, and our factory drivers Jörg Bergmeister, Wolf Henzler, Timo Bernhard, and Marc Lieb, who have numbered among the world s best sports car drivers for years, also had their start with the Supercup. Why is the Supercup such a reliable pool for new talent? It s a racing series in which success depends in large part on the driver, assuming that the conditions are right. The series is not about taking the vehicles apart and deliberately altering them. The regulations don t allow for that. So if I, as a driver, want to perform better, I have to hone my skills, and ideally my team as well. There is an important focus gained from knowing that there aren t any more excuses. Porsche has always stood behind the Supercup, even in tough times Hartmut Kristen What do young drivers need to have in order to be successful in the Supercup? In addition to talent and assertiveness, a willingness to learn is very important. After practices and races, they have to sit down with the engineers and analyze the data to see where they lost time and where they made it up. They can learn a lot in the process. And they can of course also learn how to compete fairly with the other drivers, who are on the race course with the same vehicles, and how to succeed in a tough competition on fair terms. Those are the things that they will need at some point down the line. What status does the Supercup have for Porsche Motorsport? The Supercup is the pinnacle of our onemake race series. These series play a key role in our motor sports pyramid, because they represent the transition from club sports to professional racing. Drivers and teams from around the world enter the races. And since they are held within the framework of Formula, they enjoy ample publicity. The Supercup has everything one would expect of an international race in a manageable format. It is also especially important that we run the series because that allows us to adapt it quickly to meet the demands of changes in the world of racing. That sounds exciting Because it is. It s one big, exciting challenge. On the other hand, it is also a unique opportunity we ve been presented with. It is namely a chance to become well-situated in the ever more diverse and expansive world of racing. And it is also an opportunity to ensure that teams and customers develop a long-lasting loyalty to Porsche so that we can offer them interesting opportunities to advance forwards. What do you think are the main reasons for the Supercup s staying power? The Supercup has developed so well and has attained this high degree of professionalism and recognition because Porsche has always stood behind it. When we started back in 993 things were not going terribly well for Porsche as a company. In fact, that period in time was marked by major upheaval. Despite it all, management continuously made a clear show of support for the

This message got across to the teams and partners, creating a sustained foundation of trust. Nor should one forget the strong cooperation over all the years with the FIA and the Formula organization. Which drivers immediately come to mind when you look back over the 20 years? Lilian Bryner, for example, who was the only woman to drive in the Supercup for many years and was also reasonably successful. Then old soldiers like Olaf Manthey and Wolfgang Land. But youngsters, like Marc Lieb and Timo Bernhard, whom we discovered and promoted in our one-make race series, also come to mind. The Supercup has always covered the whole gambit: from typical gentlemen drivers to high-caliber professionals. That is surely also one of its secrets of success. But you also have to realize that the starting fields were somewhat more diverse in the mid-90s than they are today. A high level of professionalism has taken root in the field of GT sports. We re trying to expand downwards, which is why it s very important that the Supercup is a fixed part of the Junior program that we started this season. It will also be exciting next year if our two junior drivers manage to make the leap into the Supercup. What chances for advancement can you offer young drivers who do well in the Supercup? For one thing we ourselves need up-andcoming drivers in the GT sector because our factory drivers are getting older too. At the same time, international GT racing is so varied and diverse that there is a great need for good young drivers outside our factory cadre as well. But to achieve international success, you need more than just talent and speed. The right attitude and appropriate conduct are just as important. The Porsche Supercup offers solid schooling in all those regards.
