3 1. ABOUT OWEN DEVELOPMENTS AND THE GBT TURBOS Lee Owen, Managing Direct of Owen Developments with the first production GBT turbo. Owen Developments is one of Europe s premier high perfmance fced induction specialists, with a proven track recd of supplying turbochargers to a global customer base covering the motspt, perfmance aftermarket and OEM sects. HISTORY - Founded in 1980, Owen Developments started as a precision engineering company specialising in high perfmance mot vehicle parts f racing and the road. Turbocharger re-manufacturing has been a mainstay of Owen Developments activity f nearly four decades. The precision refurbishment facilities allow the economic retention of key structural turbocharger components, offering a second life f units that are assembled to OEM standards. ABOUT OWEN DEVELOPMENTS - Nowadays, the design, modification and manufacture of turbochargers and turbo components has been brought in-house. The level of quality, perfmance and innovation has resulted in championship and series winning turbochargers in countries around the wld. The combination of experienced staff, sect leading machinery, advanced dynamic turbo balancing and quality control equipment has led to sole turbocharger supplier status in prestigious race series such as: FIA F2, British Touring Car Championship, MINI Challenge, Indy Lights, and China Touring Car Championship. Unique specification and turbo production can be made to suit a wide range of requirements. This includes fast road upgrades; to high specification turbos f motspt racing. In addition to the ce turbo activities, Owen Developments runs a thriving Motspt Division with a high-tech fourwheel drive rolling road dyno and full engine build facilities. With the firm s fmidable experience with cutting edge motspt engine management systems, the Motspt Division offers a full ptfolio of circuit race, drag race and rally car preparation services, plus full track-side suppt if required. THE FUTURE - The next stage in the histy of Owen Developments has been to develop and introduce their first, own line of turbochargers; OD G.B.T. (Great Britain Turbochargers). The newly designed and manufactured Owen Developments GBT Perfmance Turbo range, will cover 250 to 850 BHP engine outputs. The units come fitted as standard with the well proven M-Spec upgrades used in the past. This includes the very successful, HTA billet compress wheels, billet internals, heatshields, motspt spec ball bearing systems, conical compress nuts and billet anodised adapt rings. Extra unique features include a serviceable inline oil filter and the option to install speed senss and boost pressure fitments into the specifically designed compress cover castings. THE PRODUCTS - The range consists of three frame sizes: 54mm, 61mm and 69mm. This figure is the largest diameter (inducer) of the turbine wheel blades. The second two numbers refer to the compress wheel exducer diameter (e.g. GBT5471 would be a 54mm frame with a 71HTA compress wheel). The compress cover sizes have individual model names: Ma3, Ma5 and Ma7. Alongside having the range of perfmance turbochargers, Owen Developments will remain dedicated to suppting our existing relationships with other turbocharger manufactures as well as the product ranges they offer with the open-minded aim of continual business growth. The wide range of compress wheel sizes and turbine housing options available f this unit means it can be customised f many applications and is a popular choice f twin turbocharging. 5 3. OWEN DEVELOPMENTS GBT 61MM TURBINE FRAME TURBOCHARGER. The 61mm frame GBT is the mid-sized option in the range. This unit will typically suit litre engines providing outputs from bhp. With cross over in power figures from the 54mm to the 61mm, the operating compress efficiency can always be high with the crect unit selection. An added advantage to the Ma5 cover is that it has the same fitment as the Ma7 cover. They have been designed to be interchangeable. Turbine: Trim = 81.1 Inducer = 61.0mm Exducer = 55.0mm. 6 4. OWEN DEVELOPMENTS GBT 69MM TURBINE FRAME TURBOCHARGER. The 69mm frame GBT is the largest in the range. This option caters f the larger displacement higher revving engines requiring greater power outputs. The 69mm is capable of producing engine output from bhp using 2.0 to 4.0 litre engine configurations. As with the 61mm frame, there are 5 compress wheel size choices and the Ma7 and Ma5 covers can both be used. OPTIONAL GBT UPGRADES Once the turbocharger sizing has been determined, other options need to be selected: ANODISING - The GBT units come with a red anodised compress wheel and black adapt ring as standard. However, there is an option to select silver anodised wheels and adapt ring if desired. In addition to giving the turbos a unique aesthetic appearance, the anodising creates a protective surface layer on the aluminium that prevents oxidisation and increases wear and scratch resistance. BOOST PRESSURE TAKE-OFF AND SPEED SENSOR FITMENT - Owen Developments have designed their new compress cover castings so that they can be drilled and tapped f boost pressure and speed sens fitment. This gives complete flexibility to what data needs to be extracted from the turbo when in operation. Speed sens kits and boost pressure take-off kits can also be supplied on request. WATER-COOLED OR AIR-COOLED BEARING HOUSINGS - Water cooling is commonly run through O.E.M. and motspt turbochargers, alike. However, those applications where plumbing restrictions, packaging and weight saving is a key focus, then there is an option to upgrade the GBT unit to run an air-cooled housing. Owen Developments specially designed air and oil-cooled casting, has radial air fins, giving it a large surface area. Heat soak from the turbine wheel is dissipated substantially me than just using basic oil-cooling alone. Drawing heat away from the oil, bearing and rotational assembly parts reduces oil breakdown rates and improves component longevity. f PORTED, NON-PORTED AND RESTRICTED COMPRESSOR COVERS - Generally, Owen Developments would suggest choosing a compress cover with anti-surge pts; especially with the larger wheel sizes, as it widens the safe operating zone within the compress map, increases top end flow and protects against low down surge. The advantage to not pting a cover is that it is significantly quieter. Most applications which run air restricts are non-pted. The choice is down to the customer and either option can be provided. Bespoke restrict fitment f specific race series can also be carried out with additional, custom inlet machining. OIL FILTER AND RESTRICTOR WITHIN THE FEED UNION - Many turbochargers fail due to debris contamination in the oil feed which can catastrophically damage the motspt bearing components. This, newly designed, oil feed union houses a stainless steel mesh filter which will capture all, potentially damaging, debris and vastly increase turbo longevity. In-house testing has shown that the oil feed union will supply the bearing with an optimal amount of oil between 3 and 4 bar of oil pressure. When excessive oil is being supplied to the turbo as a result of higher oil pressure, a modified oil restrict can be used. This can be inserted into the union and reduce oil flow by around 23%. 8 6. TURBOCHARGER ACCESSORIES There are many accessies to go with the GBT turbochargers. Once the unit specification has been chosen, it is wth considering what extra components will be needed to suit the application in hand. COVER CLAMPS, TURBINE FLANGES AND V-BAND CLAMPS - High quality, stainless steel V-Band clamps and billet flanges are available with some specific turbine housings options. They are a popular option f many perfmance engines due to the reliable exhaust seal and how straightfward it is to install, remove and replace turbos. Other standard fittings such as T3 and T25 are available with the other housings. WATER AND OIL LINE FITTING KITS F installation convenience, there is a choice of different water and oil drain fittings. Oil drain unions can be supplied in different lengths and connection types. Water fittings can either be a union piece with -4AN connect banjo fitment (single piece 90 degree elbow piece) f hose connection. SILICON HOSE KITS Owen Developments are now offering a large selection of high quality, universal silicon hose section in various grades and sizes. These will come as a kit with clamps f easy installation. As standard, the silicon will be red black but other colours may be purchased on special der. CONSTANT TENSION HOSE CLAMPS Ranging in diameter from mm, the Constant Tension clamps, made by Murray Cp, are definitely wth considering f any turbocharger inlet system. The Dual Bead Shield concentrates clamping pressure by up to 30% in comparison with standard, wm-drive clamps. Thermal cycling is not an issue f these as the crinkled sprung band supplies a constant fce during expansion and contraction. These facts will help to prevent boost pipe blow off and the resulting damage this can cause by instantaneous shaft over-spinning.
