The ratchet is driven, the two-piece locking pawl engages the ratchet teeth and thus holds the crank and the load when the crank is no longer turned. Lowering the load: When the crank is turned back (counter-clockwise), the thread is released via the crank eye and lateral pressure on the ratchet is reduced. The ratchet is fixed by the locking pawl at the same time. The pressing load creates a back torque which results in the ratchet never being completely free under load. This is also the reason why for turning back a lower pressure needs to be exerted.
