3 DYNAPAC F1000 HIGHWAY-CLASS PAVER BUILT FOR PRODUCTION A few years ago, Dynapac representatives came into Columbus Equipment Company and asked technicians and sales people what they would like to see in a new paver. They were doing research for the new F1000 highway-class paver. Chuck Amnah, a paving technician specialist who has 23 years experience with Columbus Equipment, attended that meeting, and is impressed with the result. I think Dynapac has done their homework and come up with a very good product, he said. For one thing, the new Dynapac paver utilizes a number of high-quality, American-made components, which means parts are readily available. DYNAPAC HAS DONE THEIR HOMEWORK AND COME UP WITH A VERY GOOD PRODUCT. Chuck Amnah; Paving Specialist, Columbus Equipment Company With 23 years in the industry, Columbus Equipment specialist Chuck Amnah s knowledge of high-production paving equipment is second to none. I really like that they used the Carlson EZ screed, Amnah said. It's a proven screed, and most contractors are already using the EZ IV screed - some of our customers won't order a paver without one. The Sauer pumps, Cummins engine and Bonfiglioli torque hubs found in the F1000 are other proven components. Amnah noted the majority of electronics on the machine are simple electrical circuits with a few straight CAN-bus electronics, which are less expensive to repair than electronic boards. Design elements make it a better machine as well, he said. The extremely low profile provides better visibility, allowing the operator an excellent view to the auger shaft. Additionally, the machine features an outboard auger drive and conveyor design, which eliminates the drop box on the auger shaft. With this configuration, there is no separation of materials, so the finish is smoother, he added. The auger shaft can be used on the left or right side. Overall, customers who have tried the machine have really liked it, Amnah said. 4 Asphalt Segregation: EIGHT SIMPLE REMEDIES The goal of any paving contractor is to build a quality, long-lasting road. To achieve that goal, the contractor has to avoid asphalt segregation the separation of larger aggregate particles from smaller pieces, leaving an uneven mix. When segregated mixes are laid down, there's a heavy price to pay: Segregation can allow moisture into the asphalt, deteriorating its strength and resulting in premature failure. It can also be an expensive problem for contractors in terms of contractual penalties and cost of replacement. The good news most of these problems can be prevented by a vigilant crew. Keep a Full Hopper; Fold Hopper Between Loads Running the hopper when it's less than 30 to 50 percent full is the cardinal sin of asphalt paving. Keep the hopper full and the head of the material within plus or minus an inch of the middle of the auger shaft. It's also a good idea to fold the hoppers properly between loads. Once the hauling unit leaves the paver, raise the hoppers steadily as the paver moves forward. Continue raising the hoppers until the mix clears the outside corners, leaving plenty of mix covering the conveyor components. Make Sure The Tailgate Is Not Chained Too Loosely Another problem area is the center of the hopper. Since the hauling unit s tailgate acts as a barrier to the flow of material to the paving unit, the mix in this area can drop below the flow gates, separating the particles and creating a segregated stream down the center of the conveyors. Make sure the tailgate is not chained too loosely as that can increase the flow of material from the hauling unit. Watch The Front Outside Corners Of The Hopper Segregation issues can occur when the mix peaks in the center and a sinkhole appears at each outside corner, funneling the separated material down the outside of each conveyor. This is usually a problem when contractors use a pick-up machine or a transfer unit that lacks a hopper insert.

5 Eliminate Material Spillage Material spillage is an issue when the mix overflows the edges of the hopper. This typically happens when the overflow guards are damaged or have been torn off. Once the spilled mix (usually larger particles) is paved over, it's difficult to detect until the longitudinal cracks begin to appear. Monitoring the amount of material in the hopper and maintaining overflow guards can easily solve this issue. Add Reverse Augers And An Extension Plate Center-line streaking segregation that comes from below the auger drive box leaving a three- to five-inch streak down the center of the mat can be an issue. The streak, caused by the drive box preventing the mix from moving around freely, will ultimately have to be repaired. Adding reverse augers on both sides of the drive box, as well as adding an extension plate to confine the material, or the addition of a Dynapac F1000 paver to your fleet should eliminate the problem. Replace Worn Augers Quarter-point segregation occurs when the bearing support pedestal is holding back the mix. The culprit is frequently a worn auger flight and replacing it often eliminates the segregation. Use kick-out augers with a variable width screed, which can spread the mix beyond the bearing support pedestal. An alternative: Flood the augers by raising the flow gates and reducing the conveyor speed. Add Baffle Plates Another potential problem area is in the outer edges of the conveyor chains. As the mix moves down the outside of the conveyor, particles may catch on the chain guard, segregating the material as it passes through the augers and onto the mat. Add baffle plates to keep the mix moving in a single stream. Use Tunnel Confinement and Auger Extensions Another possible cause of segregation is at the outside edge of the screed typically a problem with variable-width screeds or machines with no auger confinement tunnels. The mix breaks and runs along the forward edge of the mix that's being augered out to the ends of the screed. The separated particles accumulate along the edger plates and end up on the edge of the mat. Use tunnel confinement and auger extensions to control the distance the material is allowed to run before it reaches the edger plate.
