Page 1 of 5 and Training Briefing Welcome to the ATV Operation and Training Briefing. This document is designed to review the hazards associated with operating an ATV as well as provide detailed controls to keep people, our equipment and the environment safe. Certified Training Requirements Recognized ATV training course. PPE Requirements Summary Image Description Standard Fuel Top up the fuel before leaving for work each day. Take additional fuel to the work site if necessary. Planning and Equipment ATV operators should have a radio and an extra battery. Carrying a map or aerial photo is recommended. ATV operators who will be working alone must read the Working Alone Training Briefing. CSA Approved Steel Toe Boots Helmut with Chin Strap Required Leather Gloves Eye Protection Pre-Trip Inspection Complete your pre-trip inspection before any ride or in the evening of the preceding day. If evening inspections are used, if anybody else has operated the ATV since your inspection, it must be inspected again. Pre-Trip Inspection Running out of Fuel (S) Loss of Contact (S) Exposure to Various Petroleum Products (H) CV Damage (S) Inspection Items Oil level CV boots for condition Tire pressure Brakes (Foot, hand and parking) Rear brakes clear of mud Air coolers / mufflers clear of debris (particularly flammable debris such as peat moss or swamp grass) Basic Operation Like riding a bike, there is a smart and safe way to ride an ATV. These rules are non-negotiable. You cannot skimp on the safety gear or pick and choose which of the road rules you want to follow. Following these rules can be the difference between life and death. Basic Operation Loss of Control (S) Hit Tree, Hole or Visually Obstructed Object (S) Damage to Engine (S) Loss of Cargo (S) Fatigue (S) Personal Injury (S) Burns (S) Do not crank the engine more than 10 seconds on each attempt. Rules All operators should be well rested before operating an ATV. Never operate an ATV under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A helmet with chin strap, and long pants must always be worn.
Page 2 of 5 and Training Briefing Engine Damage If the engine fails to start after a few seconds, release the starter button. Pause a few seconds before the next attempt. Aggressive starting attempts may cause the starter to heat up and be damaged. Do not shift gears without releasing the throttle. Damage to the engine or drive train may occur. Driving Safety Ride at a reasonable speed for your experience, load, and environmental conditions. Do not ride fast in unfamiliar territory. Do not follow closely when traveling on a dry surface or areas with heavy cover. All cargo must be properly fastened to the cargo racks. Park in neutral and set the parking brake. Carrying Passengers Most ATVs can carry only one person safely. "Two-Ups" take the operator plus one passenger. Carrying Passengers Various Bodily Injuries (S) Do not carry passengers unless the machine is designed to do so. There should only be one person per seat on any vehicle. Passengers are not permitted in cargo boxes. Passengers must wear all required PPE. Reduce speed when transporting passengers. Passengers should get off and walk on rough or sloped terrain. Hauling Material Recognize that hauling loads will alter the handling characteristics of the ATV and modify your driving habits accordingly. Hauling Material Loss of Control Due to a Heavy Load (S) Equipment Rollover (S) Loss of Load Fuel Spill (E) Damage to Equipment (S) Heavy Loads Slow down because carrying heavy loads will affect the normal responses of the ATV: Slower stopping time. Increasingly unstable on slopes. May not be able to absorb bumps as well. May be more difficult to steer. Will be more prone to getting stuck in mud. Securing the Load Secure load with bungee straps or ratchet straps. Replace worn or defective straps. It is recommended that you leave your helmet on and wear safety glasses when handling bungee cords as they have a habit of snapping back and hitting you. Hauling Chainsaws and Fuel Make sure jerry cans are completely closed. The saw must have a chain guard in place. Strap saw and jerry can securely to the rack. If taking extra bar oil, transport the fuel and the bar oil in a milk crate on your rack. Bar oil containers are not suitable for strapping to the rack alone. Pulling a Trailer Pulling a trailer requires extra care and attention. A trailer puts extra weight on your vehicle and increases the space you need to drive and stop safely. Trailer safety involves some simple and important rules. Pulling a Trailer Over-stacking (S) Overturning (S) Unexpected Disconnect (S) Personal Injury to Occupants (S) Never transport passengers in the trailer. Keep loads low so that the centre of gravity is minimized and kept low. Travel more slowly. Change route to avoid side slopes when pulling a trailer with an ATV. Adjust the ball and clamp if the trailer attachment appears loose or if the trailer comes off. Keep the hitch socket clear of mud. Back-up slowly ATV trailers jackknife quickly.
Page 3 of 5 and Training Briefing Traversing Slopes Traversing a slope can cause the ATV to slip and/or rollover or make contact with objects around you. Traversing Slopes Traveling Across Slopes Where possible, avoid traveling across slopes. Move your body to the center of the ATV and lean uphill. Maintain your body weight toward the uphill side of the vehicle to maintain balance and stability. On a slippery or loose surface, you may need to steer slightly uphill to maintain a straight course across the slope. Making Turns on Slopes Always keep your body weight shifted uphill when on a slope. Do not make sharp or abrupt turns on a slope as the ATV may overturn. Where possible, avoid making turns on slopes. Losing Forward Speed If you incorrectly estimate the climbing capability or terrain conditions, the ATV may not have enough power or traction to continue uphill. If you are about to lose all forward speed: Use the front and the rear brakes together to bring the ATV to a stop with the vehicle pointed uphill and transfer your weight forward. Get off the ATV and continue to hold the brakes. Set the park brake, shift into neutral and turn the engine off. Assess the situation and radio for assistance. Rolling Backward If the ATV starts to roll backwards before you begin braking, keep your weight transferred forward, carefully apply the front brake first, then slowly apply the rear brake as well. Do not apply either brake abruptly if you are rolling backwards, or the vehicle may overturn. If you are physically capable of doing so and space provides, it is recommended that you turn the ATV around rather than backing down the hill. To do this: Maintain brake control at all times. Physically turn the ATV around from the uphill side of the ATV. Climbing Slopes The riding technique for climbing hills on an ATV involves transferring your weight toward the front of the vehicle, which helps keep the wheels on the ground. Climbing Slopes Limits If the manufacturer has not set limits for operating an ATV on sloping ground, the maximum allowable slope is 5% unless you have written safe operating procedures for steeper slopes (WorksafeBC Reg 16.52). Never climb slopes with excessively slippery or loose surfaces. Never go over the top of a hill at top speed. An obstacle, sharp drop, or another person or vehicle could be on the other side of the hill. Always check the terrain carefully before you start up any hill. Get Your Weight Forward Shift your body slightly forward on the seat and lean forward. For maximum weight shift, stand on the foot pegs and lean over handlebars. Climbing the Hill Climb hills with the ATV pointing straight up hill. Take a running start in an appropriate gear and speed for the conditions. Maintain a steady speed as you ascend the hill without applying sudden power or changing gears to avoid the ATV from overturning. Descending Slopes The riding technique for descending slopes on an ATV involves transferring your weight to the back of the vehicle, which helps keep the wheels on the ground. Descending Slopes
and Training Briefing Page 4 of 5 Always check the terrain carefully before you start down any hill. Shift your body back on the seat and keep your arms fully extended on the handlebars. Try to descend the slope with the ATV pointed directly down hill. Shift the transmission into low gear before descending and leave the throttle closed. Both feet must be kept on the foot pegs at all times. Both hands must be kept on the handlebars at all times. Use the rear brakes more than the front brake to control speed. Driving Over Site-Prep Areas Traveling over rough site-prepared grounds could result in serious bodily strains, capsize or roll-over. Driving Over Site-Prep Areas Various bodily Strains (S) Avoid traveling over site preparation areas at anything other than low speeds because it is very easy to lose control. Loading and Unloading Introduction Many accidents occur when loading and unloading ATVs. You can sustain pinched fingers/hands, or even be crushed by the ATV if it slips off the loading ramp. Loading and Unloading Pinched Fingers (S) Crushed by Vehicle (S) ATV Slips Off Loading Ramp (S) Slippery Ramps (when muddy) (S) Slip / Trip / Fall (S) Gas Spillage (S) Set-Up Prior to loading / unloading, park the vehicle (preferably by an uphill slope so that the slope of the ramps is minimized) and set the parking brake. Vehicle hazard lights and a high visibility vests should be used when loading / unloading an ATV where other traffic may be encountered. Apply loading ramps to the tailgate chains attached (if equipped). If chains are not available, make sure that the ramp is secured to the vehicle by binding a tie down strap around the ramp and the truck bumper. Ensure lugs on ramps are totally inserted in holes or slots provided in tailgate. Ensure ramps are parallel and aligned and spacing is compatible with the ATV being loaded. Ensure feet of ramps are squarely and firmly in contact with the ground. Driving on Ramps Wear your helmet. Keep unnecessary personnel clear of the immediate area. Activate the throttle to make sure it is functioning smoothly; you do not want it getting stuck at all. If the brakes are not fully functional, the ATV should be pushed on the truck, not driven. Use first gear to drive up the ramp. Carry a bit of momentum but not too much that you cannot stop within a couple of feet. Securing the ATV To transport, put on handbrake, put in neutral, turn off engine, and shut off the gas. Ensure the quad is secured at 4 corners in the back of the vehicle with non-stretch fasteners prior to moving. Unloading Wear your helmet. Turn on the gas. Start the engine and allow it to slightly warm up. Put in reverse. Release parking brake on ATV. Keep all ground personnel away from the immediate area. Back down properly secured ramps. Smoking During ATV Operation Smoking During ATV Operation
and Training Briefing Page 5 of 5 Fires (S) Smoke Inhalation (S) Smoke only in designated areas. Never smoke while operating or refueling the machine. All cigarettes must be completely extinguished before leaving unattended. Fire Prevention ATV s have been known to start forest fires. Flammable material on the cooling fins of the cylinder head and exhaust system can dry out quickly and may result in producing a hot ember that may fall off the ATV and start a fire. As you are driving away from the ember drop, you may not even be aware of the fire until it has grown into a serious problem. Fire Prevention Forest Fire (S) Burns (S) Keep the air fins clear of flammable debris, which can dry, turn to a hot ember and fall onto the forest floor starting a fire. Park on exposed soil whenever possible. If the ATV is being worked hard and is getting hot, ensure that flammable material does not accumulate on the engine or exhaust system. In addition, you should park on exposed soil whenever possible to help prevent hot embers from falling on flammable material. exhaust components are hot. Wash hands and face prior to eating, drinking and/or smoking. Tire Pressure Use a low-pressure tire gauge when the tires are cold. Make two measurements of the tire pressure and use second reading. Pressure must be equal on both sides. Uneven pressure can alter the handling characteristics of the ATV and will place undue stress on the rider s muscles. Re-fuelling Turn off the ATV and make sure there are no other sources of ignition in the area. Never refuel within 30 meters of any stream or water body. Make sure you fully close any jerry cans used & restore them properly. Adding Engine Oil Park the machine on a level surface and warm up engine for several minutes. Shut off. Unscrew the dipstick completely and wipe it off with clean rag. Rest the dipstick in hole. Note: let unscrewed dipstick just rest on the case thread. Pull up dipstick, inspect oil. Add oil to maximum level if needed. Do not overfill. Check for leakage visually: gear oil, differential gear oil. Maintenance Basic maintenance on your ATV can increase its performance and reliability. General ATV Maintenance Pinched or Cut Fingers (S) Burns (S) Fires (S) Exposure to Motor Oil or Grease (S) General Safety Avoid conducting maintenance when the engine and
