2 TM Entering The Age of Design Based Repairs When a vehicle frame was damaged in the not-too-distant past, the repair plan was somewhat elementary you simply pulled it back into the correct position. It s no longer quite that easy. Vehicles designed and manufactured today are technologically light-years ahead of vehicles that rolled off the assembly line just a few short years ago, and this fundamental shift in how vehicles are conceived and built has placed the collision repair industry in a state of flux. While many body shops continue to earn a good living painting and pulling on sheet metal, those days are rapidly drawing to a close. The streets are now filled with vehicles that bristle with sophisticated materials and systems. The use of complex crush zones, high-strength composites and safety systems uniquely calibrated to the vehicle frame are now as commonplace as lug nuts. And these advanced systems are no longer limited to just the high-end luxury vehicle category. They can now be found on vehicles in virtually every make, model and price range. As a result, most vehicles today as well as all those that follow them can no longer be repaired using traditional techniques and equipment. 3 TM are often unique to that vehicle in order to return them to their proper pre-collision state. Otherwise, the crush caps, crush zones, accelerometers, air bags and other such high-tech systems may not respond as designed in the event that vehicle is involved in another collision or worse yet may not respond at all! That places a tremendous responsibility not to mention liability squarely on the shoulders of the collision repair provider. Of course there will be shops that continue to repair vehicles the way they always have. However, we re not going to concern ourselves with those folks because, quite frankly, they will in all likelihood be pursuing other career options within a very short period of time. The shops that will not only survive, but thrive, in the coming years will be those that stay abreast of vehicle design shifts as they occur, and understand that these shifts will not only require new repair processes and procedures, but also new ways to validate that the repairs they make have returned the vehicle to its original condition and that all related systems function as originally designed. The technique successful shops use in this process is becoming known as Design Based Repairs, and will require collision repair professionals to constantly reinvent themselves and the way they do business. Simply put, Design Based Repairs is the process by which shops must know how the vehicle was constructed and be aware of any special materials or systems that might impact not only how the vehicle is repaired, but estimated repair costs as well. Most OEM s do a good job of providing information on their vehicle designs and suggested repair methods. The problem most shops are running into now is educating their technicians and estimators to include this step as part of the initial repair plan process, knowing where to go to find the vehicle data they need and having the correct tools and equipment available to make the recommended repairs. As more and more of these newer vehicles are involved in collisions, smart shops will address and resolve these issues. The key point for shops to understand when accessing and using OEM data is that the final decision on how best to repair a vehicle still rests with them. The data they collect is only a tool that assists in preparing a plan that assures the vehicle will be repaired correctly. But a tremendous side benefit to this procedure is that this data is extremely effective in justifying repair plans and associated costs to the insurance provider. Typically, once an adjuster sees a plan that is based on recommended OEM repair procedures, the debate is over.
