5 D Range Each model in thé D range, from thé D Spécial to thé DS 21 Pallas Electronic Injection, has its own distinctive personality, yet ail are joined by thé same essential quaities. They ail hâve thé sleek aerodynamic profile which combines beauty with précision engineering. They ail travel at maximum speeds of 100 m.p.h. to 118 m.p.h,, their safe construction and handling are remarkable, their cornfort legendary throughout thé world. They are ail front wheel drive with hydropneumatic suspension and power braking. The principle of front wheel drive is to concentrate thé weight of ail thé mechanical units on thé front wheels which both drive and steer thé car. This, combined with Michelin XAS radial ply tyres which are standard throughout thé range, results in greater adhésion and, because thé vehicle's centre of gravity is moved forward, thé rear axle naturally follows thé heavier front one when cornering. Automatic height correctors ensure a constant ground clearance irrespective of thé load being carried, and an additional manual control enables thé ground clearance to be raised to cope with rough or flooded roads or for changing a wheel. The twin-circuit braking System is full power-operated. A brake effort distributor apportions thé braking effort between thé front dise and thé rear drum brakes to give maximum lock-free retardation, The front dise brakes are inboard mounted and hâve spécial cooling ducts for fade free braking.
