When Hornby announced, at the start of the year, that they were planning to add a sound fitted wagon to the TTS range there were many people who were sceptical. Some suggested that it may be a gimmick. Now the sceptics may just have to swallow those words. The first samples have started to appear via the Hornby media channels and the model is looking very impressive indeed. The TTS van takes the form of a normal bauxite liveried, ventilated van with labels depicting it as a condemned vehicle. This will make it perfect for placing at the end of a siding. The sound chip is loaded with a wide collection of sounds to suit a station, staton yard, workshop and signal box. Some of these can be played as a continuous loop or in a random selection. From bird song to a random wheel tapper there really is a wide selection that will add real atmosphere to any DCC layout. The model is due out in late December and is sure to be popular. Vintage Tea Rooms and Cycle Shop closes Weathering in the Peak! We are sad to announce that our neighbours, the Vintage Tea Room and Cycle Shop, has closed down during September.

2 Vintage Tea Rooms and Cycle Shop closes Weathering in the Peak! We are sad to announce that our neighbours, the Vintage Tea Room and Cycle Shop, has closed down during September. The tea room, which stocked a delicious range of home made cakes, unexpectedly closed its doors for good just as the illuminations season began. After remaining open for the first day of the illuminations, the cafe was closed on the first Sunday in September and had been emptied by the Monday morning. There are still plenty of places to eat when you come to visit us. Another tearoom The Clock Strikes 3 is just around the corner and is also well worth a visit. The Class 44 class were the first of the Peak series of diesel electrics. They first appeared in 1959, working passenger trains on the West Coast Main Line eventually being allocated to Toton depot in Nottinghamshire. The class were all named after British mountains and number Whernside is the subject of Bachmann s latest release. It uses the brand new chassis which includes room for a 21 pin DCC decoder and space to incorporate sound fitting. The model is in the prototype s final livery of BR blue with yellow bonnet fronts and has a factory weathering effect. The weathering extends to the detailing pack which include various route indicator disks. The model is weighty and runs well straight from the box. It has a good pulling power, even at slow speed and looks perfectly at home at the head of a long freight train. Matlock Bath Club Membership Drive Our neighbouring model railway club enjoyed a successful open weekend during September.

They are working hard to develop their premises to include a workshop as well as space to display a variety of layouts in different scales.

The group s youngest member, Jacob, has just completed a shunting layout based on a RAF base. He is hoping to be able to attend some exhibitions soon.

3 Matlock Bath Club Membership Drive Our neighbouring model railway club enjoyed a successful open weekend during September. They welcomed a large number of people to their club rooms, raising over 100 for club funds. In the long term the club would like to open their club rooms every weekend through the season. They are working hard to develop their premises to include a workshop as well as space to display a variety of layouts in different scales. Currently the group are preparing a 00 gauge layout, Slade for an exhibition outing in November. An N gauge layout, built in a coffee table, is also progressing well. RAILWAYS FEATURE STRONGLY IN MATLOCK BATH ILLUMINATIONS The annual Matlock Bath illuminations kicked off earlier in September with the regular parade of decorated boats. Two of the exhibits had a real railway theme with two famous locomotives depicted. The Thomas the Tank Engine boat won second prize in the prize giving. The standard of boats were so high that the Mallard boat failed to land a prize. The group are looking for more members to help them achieve their aims. The illuminations and decorated boat parade continues each weekend until the end of of October with fireworks each Saturday at 9pm. The boat parade takes place at 7.45pm and 9.15pm each Saturday and 7.30pm on a Sunday. A2B Model Railways will remain open until 8.45pm every Saturday during the illuminations. 3

4 A2B ISSUE 8 SEPTEMBER 2018 LOCOMOTIVE PROFILE A4 WOODCOCK ATLANTIC STORM DUE TO HIT The new Bachmann model of the Brighton Atlantic seems to have been a long time in the making, but it is due to arrive in store in early October. Woodcock was a member of the streamlined A4 class, a sister loco of the record breaking Mallard. In total, thirty five A4 s were built between 1935 and They mainly spent their working lives hauling express passenger services from King s Cross to Edinburgh. They survived in service until the mid-1960s, latterly being allocated to the Aberdeen-Glasgow service Woodcock entered traffic on July 26, 1937, allocated to Gateshead, where for six months the locomotive was used on mundane duties, unless an engine failed on one of the LNER 'glamour' trains. A brief allocation to Doncaster in January 1938 was followed by a move to Kings Cross on February 25th, from where Woodcock was to operate until June 1963 when it moved to New England; being withdrawn from there in October. The model of the was announced four years ago but it looks set to be worth the wait. We will be receiving a supply of Atlantic Beachy Head in BR black. A replica of this loco is being built at the Bluebell Railway so it is sure to prove popular. Early magazine reviews have suggested we will be in for a treat with first class detail and performance being reported. Train sets are always very popular at this time of year. Many modellers first sparked their interest thanks to a festive Hornby train set. This year s starter set is entitled the Highland Rambler and includes an saddle tank in blue livery, a matching four wheel coach and a four wheel wagon carrying the name Inverness. The box also contains the traditional starter oval and controller. The pack is available for This year also sees Hornby say farewell to Thomas the Tank Engine. Their license arrangement comes to an end at the end of December. There are still plenty of models of the little blue tank engine available including some of the starter sets. A2B has the starter set in stock, priced at SHOW REMINDER The Mickleover Model Railway Club are holding their annual show on 6th / 7th October. It takes place at the Mickleover Community Centre. 5

The show will feature a variety of layouts in different scales. These include Jim Read s 0 gauge layout, Muckton.

6 Skaleby West heads to Sheffield Our shop layout, Skaleby West, is heading out on exhibition duties on Saturday 6th October. It is due to make its second visit to the Sheffield Model Railway Exhibition. This takes place at the Davy Sporting Club, Prince of Wales Road, Sheffield (see advert opposite). The show will feature a variety of layouts in different scales. These include Jim Read s 0 gauge layout, Muckton. 00 gauge layouts include Skaleby West, Bridge End, Witham Grove and a depiction of the Longmoor Military Railway. There are also layouts in 009, Z and N gauges. If you are visiting you may wish to take advantage of the free parking, refreshments and fully licensed bar. It is sure to be a very enjoyable day. Skaleby West attended last year s show and debuted the shunting card system. Despite running with DCC Sound in the shop it is set to revert to analogue control for its latest show outing. MATLOCK BATH STEAM PUNK FESTIVAL The busy Autumn period continues in Matlock Bath with the new Steam Punk Weekend announced for the 17th and 18th November. There will be a Steam Punk parade from 3pm on both days, a Treasure Hunt, Face painting and an array of trade support. It is sure to be an impressive weekend. 6

More Bachmann Arrivals There has also been a large number of Bachmann new arrivals at A2B Model Railways recently. Leading the way are a pair of class 66 diesels.

Diesel fans may also be interested in the newly arrived class 47/4 which carries Network South East livery as 47576 KIngs Lynn. The steam era fans have not been forgotten.

The British Railways era is covered by the recently released Ivatt 2 tank depicting number 41243 with early emblem and the Robinson 04 in weathered BR livery as number 63762.

7 More Bachmann Arrivals There has also been a large number of Bachmann new arrivals at A2B Model Railways recently. Leading the way are a pair of class 66 diesels carries EWS livery with DB Schenker branding whilst is depicted in DRS Plain Blue. Diesel fans may also be interested in the newly arrived class 47/4 which carries Network South East livery as KIngs Lynn. The steam era fans have not been forgotten. After a flurry of interest in the LMS liveried Midland 1F, number 1739, we are pleased to have replenished our stocks. The British Railways era is covered by the recently released Ivatt 2 tank depicting number with early emblem and the Robinson 04 in weathered BR livery as number Soon to arrive, alongside the long awaited Brighton Atlantic and class 44 Whernside will be the brand new Mark 1 car flat wagons in Motorail livery. These are already receiving excellent reviews in the modelling press and we are looking forward to getting our hands on them. HORNBY J36 SET TO SELL OUT Hornby s soon to be released first model of the Scottish based J36 is close to selling out. The manufacturer has only a few models left to sell to the trade. The first release will be in LNER livery as number 722. It is due to arrive by the end of the year, priced at We are taking pre-orders at A2B. 7

Malcolm runs fairs at Burton on Trent, Alfreton, Kirkby in Ashfield and Nottingham. All the fairs attract a range of die cast and railway dealers providing plenty of choice for the visitor.

8 Townsend Toy Fairs In the days before the internet and ebay, evening swap meets or toy fairs were very popular events. They became great social occasions and a chance to purchase the latest models or find a second hand bargain. Malcolm Townsend s selection of fairs are a great way to recapture those days. Malcolm runs fairs at Burton on Trent, Alfreton, Kirkby in Ashfield and Nottingham. All the fairs attract a range of die cast and railway dealers providing plenty of choice for the visitor. Most fairs also provide light refreshments. A2B attended the latest Burton Swapmeet which took place on the evening of Wednesday 26th September at the Burton Town Hall. This long running event opens 6.30pm pm and usually features a wide range of model railway stockists. The latest fair did not disappoint with a good mix of new and second hand stock available. Sadly the crowd was much reduced and the show seems to have suffered following the closure of the Burton Town Hall car park a few years ago. This has stopped a number of people from attending. Happily it appears the replacement car park is now offering free parking for evening events without the need to collect a permit. Perhaps it is worth another visit for those who have left it behind. The next Burton on Trent event takes place on Wednesday 5th December - just in time for some festive shopping. Prior to Burton, the next Townsend Fair takes place at the Blue Coat Academy, Nottingham, NG5 5GY on Saturday 13th October (10am - 2pm). If you are fed up of the wife watching the Great British Bake Off - fear not. Very soon you will be able to enjoy a reality show for the railway modeller. The Great Model Railway Challenge launches on Channel 5 on Friday 5th October. It is seen as Bake off for model railways. Each week teams of modellers will compete to complete impressive working models against the clock in one of five heats. The five winners will then meet in the grand final. The show airs at 8pm each Friday and has received some very good early comments. 8

9 Andy s Corner It does not seem long ago that I was penning my thoughts at the start of September. Where has that month gone? It seems to have vanished in a whirl of new arrivals as more and more products arrive at the door of A2B Model Railways. Recently we have taken delivery of Bachmann s model of the class 44 Peak Whernside. There is a feature on this model elsewhere in this newsletter and it really is stunning. Bachmann are also set to supply us with our stocks of the Brighton Atlantic very soon. Hornby meanwhile seem to be gearing up for Christmas with the release of their latest starter train sets. Despite the popularity of Playstations, IPads and X-Boxes, I am sure there will be some children who will be wanting a Thomas or Highland Rambler set come the festive period! Whisper it quietly but there may, just may, be an appearance of the elusive Hornby Peckett locomotive very soon. Just like the first trio of models, the latest versions are proving very difficult to come by. I hope to bring news of them in the next issue of the newsletter. We live in hope! Meanwhile I hope to welcome the Gaugemaster and Peco products to the shop before the next newsletter. Sorting out the deliveries has taken some time. My apologies for the delay. Finally, I would like to play a personal tribute to my Great Uncle Dennis. He sadly passed away a couple of weeks ago, just a few days after the passing of his dear wife. Dennis was a talented scratch builder of OO gauge model locomotives and was a real inspiration to me. RIP Dennis and Margaret. 10 DCC SOUND PROVING POPULAR Model railways have progressed so much since the early days of Triang Hornby.
