PIONEERING RENAULT WOWS AT GOODWOOD Marking its 20th anniversary in 2013, the Goodwood Festival of Speed has become the UK s premier automotive event, now attracting 180,000 visitors per year. Held in glorious sunshine, this year s festival featured Renault s biggest presence yet, showcasing a number of landmark sports vehicles from its 115-year history. Among the vehicles taking to the hill was the 1902 Type K, one of the earliest racing cars and the first to win Renault an international victory, alongside the CV des records speed trial car with its 9.0-litre engine, the Le Manswinning Alpine A422B of 1978 and the A310 and 5 Maxi Turbo which delivered rally victories during the 1970s and 1980s. The event also showcases a prolific career in Formula 1. Spanning 36 years and 11 constructors titles, four RB27-powered F1 cars from Lotus, Red Bull Racing, Caterham and Williams teams were on display, while the world s first turbocharged F1 car, the 1978 RS01, wowed spectators on the hill. Not only did this set a precedent which meant all others switched to turbo power within three years, but as the modern F1 cars shift to 1.6-litre turbocharged V8s next year its reappearance has never been timelier. Bringing the brand s racing heritage up to date, the 100bhp Twizy Renaultsport F1 showed how Formula 1 derived Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) can be used to give a six-fold power increase to 100bhp in the tuned-up quadricycle, while the mid-engined Twin Run paid homage to the iconic Clio V6 and 5 Maxi Turbo. Lined up alongside the latest Renault models, it showed a manufacturer with innovation, excitement and motorsport at its very core. FORMULA 1 HERITAGE Renault s 100bhp Twizy brings racing heritage up to date with its Formula 1 technology.

5 GT LINE ADDS AFFORDABLE SPORTINESS TO NEW CLIO RANGE The new Clio has gained a sports-influenced GT Line trim this summer, offering 120g/km CO2 emissions and low insurance to keep running costs to a minimum. Developed by Renaultsport, the GT Line features uprated suspension and its sibling s R.S. Drive with two selectable driving modes as standard, allowing the driver to change throttle, gearbox and suspension settings at the push of a button, and choose from a more leisurely economical drive or a sporty ride. Under the bonnet, its 1.2- litre TCe turbo petrol engine offers 120bhp and is paired with Renault s dual-clutch EDC gearbox, sprinting to 62mph in 9.9 seconds while returning 54.3mpg on the combined cycle. Priced at 17,395, GT Line models are marked out by 17-inch anthracite alloy wheels, and an aluminium-accented interior. 3D Arkamys Audio Radio, and the R-Link connected touchscreen multimedia system with TomTom satellite navigation are also included in standard. RENAULT CAPTUR: BEST-IN-CLASS RESIDUAL VALUES The residual value experts at CAP have awarded Renault s new Captur compact crossover with some of the best forecasts in its class retaining up to 43% of its value after three years and 60,000 miles and matching the MINI Countryman in the process. Already in showrooms and launched to a fanfare of media praise, the Captur is priced from 12,495 on the road. The attractive crossover combines chic yet rugged styling with Renault s latest Energy petrol and diesel engines, high equipment levels, ingenious touches such as removable seat covers and a plethora of customisation options to make sure each one is unique. The car has also completed a month-long Capture Life Experience, held at Westfield London W12, the capital s most exclusive shopping centre. Resulting in thousands of sales leads for the dealer network and a 50% conversion rate for test drives, the event concluded with a collaboration with Clothes Show Live. Named Captur Couture, it matched the crossover s three distinctive colour collections to clothing lines from retail brands in the Westfield centre for a unique fashion show with live music

DOUBLE WIN AT FLEET WORLD HONOURS Renault has added a further two awards to its trophy cabinet, collecting a pair of titles at the prestigious 2013 Fleet World Honours event in a year where the calibre of entries was described by judges as the highest yet. Fleet World Managing Editor Ross Durkin said: You really have to take your hat off to the car manufacturers who continue to rise to the challenges set by government and fleet buyers alike. The fleet service providers have also demonstrated an appetite for innovation and it is a real pleasure to recognise the achievements of the best of these. Against this stiff competition, the new Clio collected the title of Best Small Car in recognition of its peppy, efficient engines, funky looks, smart cabin and involving drive, the judges said. Fellow small Renault, the ZOE, was presented with the Technology Award, praising the electric supermini s ability to take electromobility into the mainstream. Best Small Car Renault Clio Technology Award Renault ZOE RENAULT WELCOMES CHARGING POINT GRANTS Renault has welcomed the additional Government funding for electric vehicle charge points with the announcement of the winning bids for additional points to be installed by dozens of local authorities, NHS Trusts and train operators. The announcement comes after an extra 500m was committed to drive forward the market for ultra low emission vehicles, as part of the Government's plans for roads reform published in July. The coalition government will provide 75% of the cost of installing new chargepoints. Commenting on its latest initiative, Renault UK s Ben Fletcher, Electric Vehicle Product Manager, said: The two most common preconceptions of electric vehicles are an expensive purchase price and lack of public opportunity to charge. The new ZOE s pricing puts the first point to rest, and this latest announcement, on top of the established highly developed network of public charging points, answers the second and allows customers to buy EV with complete confidence.

7 DEALERS GO DIGITAL WITH NEW 3D CONFIGURATOR Renault has launched a new digital tool aimed at helping customers get a more accurate view of their future car. Now available at 140 of its UK dealers, the remainder are set to get the system soon. Named ConTact, from tactile configurator, the package enables visitors to fine-tune options on an Apple ipad, with the results shown on a 42-inch LCD screen alongside a real demonstrator model. In turn, this allows them to have a 360- degree, three-dimensional view of the car s interior and exterior features before ordering. Every Renault model launched or facelifted in the last year is included. Z.E. RANGE SAVES 2,500 IN LONDON CONGESTION CHARGE FEES Renault now offers the biggest range of vehicles exempt from the London Congestion Charge, following a tightening of the CO2 emissions threshold from 99g/km to 74g/km. The new Ultra Low Emission Discount replaces the old Greener Vehicle Discount from the 1st of July. To qualify for free entry into the congestion charge zone, newly registered vehicles must emit less than 75g/km and meet the latest Euro 5 emissions standards. While there will be a three-year sunset period during which cars bought before the 1st July still qualify for the old discounts, the change means all newly registered petrol and diesel models and the majority of hybrids will no longer qualify affecting some 20,000 drivers in the capital. Renault s Z.E. electric vehicle range offers a solution to suit most of them. Passenger vehicles include the jazzy Twizy two-seater quadricycle, the advanced ZOE supermini and Fluence Z.E. family saloon, sold alongside the Kangoo Van Z.E. and forthcoming single-seat Twizy Cargo van. Aside from the savings in fuel and tax and reduction in harmful tailpipe emissions, each could also now save 2,500 per year in congestion charge fees

ZOE THE brilliant new ZOE is stylish, affordable and incredibly versatile: the perfect corporate car for those who do mostly short runs, commutes or businesses looking for a striking green flagship for their brand. Because the car has been designed as electric from the start, rather than adapted from a traditional internal combustion powered vehicle, driving ZOE requires no compromise from the driver. It offers all the space and safety you would expect of a car in this class, allied with the smooth, quiet and responsive driving experience of an electric vehicle. With an NEDC homologated range of 130 miles, which translates to around 60 miles in cold weather and 90 miles in temperate conditions, ZOE also fits the daily needs of a large proportion of drivers with a typical user only needing to charge three times a week. Talking of recharging, ZOE is the only electric vehicle to feature the Chameleon charger. Patented by Renault, this gives great flexibility and ensures that you can always make the most of the power source available. Charging batteries at a public charging station takes between 30 minutes and 9 hours, depending on the power source, but the most common points would give a full charge in 3-4 hours. And as there s a free domestic wall-box, which gives a full charge in 3-4 hours, included with ZOE, home-charging is made easy too. The electric motor has a power output of 65kW, equivalent to 88hp, and instantly delivers maximum torque of 220Nm. Acceleration and pull-away are responsive from low speeds, while its top speed is limited to 84 mph. Driving is more relaxing too, thanks to the silent ride and smooth, gearshiftfree acceleration. ZOE is available in three trim levelsand is packed with a raft of innovations. The sleek supermini has the innovative R-Link multimedia system fitted as standard, delivering integrated connectivity with motoring services and applications. However, possibly the most ground-breaking element of ZOE is the price: starting at just 13,995 (after the UK Plug-In Car Grant), it s comparable to its diesel-engined competition. 9 CLIO THE fourth generation Clio sets new standards in quality, dynamism and efficiency, as well as being bigger yet lighter than its predecessor. Breaking with tradition, Renault s stylish new supermini is available solely in five-door guise, and offers a coupé profile with all the practicality of five doors. Three engines are available with the new Clio: a 75bhp 1.2-litre petrol, fuel efficient 90bhp 1.5 dci with emissions as low as 83g/km and a three cylinder turbocharged 0.9-litre 90bhp petrol. Priced from 10,795 to 16,295 the new version comes in four trim levels: Expression, Expression+, Dynamique MediaNav and Dynamique S MediaNav, with ECO versions in Expression+ and Dynamique MediaNav trim levels. New Clio comes packed with a lot of equipment as standard including a Bass Reflex speaker system, Bluetooth radio with USB port and jack socket, Hill Start Assist, keyless entry and ignition, 7 touchscreen MediaNav infotainment system with integrated navigation (Dynamique MediaNav and above) as well as safety and comfort features such as driver/passenger/side and head and thorax airbags, electric front windows and door mirrors, Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control. An extensive range of personalisation options includes five colour options packs for interior and exterior accents, a choice of roof decals and colour inserts for wheels, to ensure no two cars need ever look alike. Add the optional R-Link infotainment system,and the Clio lets you take your world on the move, including and social media support with a growing selection of downloadable apps. Inside Clio s stunning interior, a fully adjustable seating position, clear instrument dials including digital speedo and a stylish wing-shaped dash create a modern, uncluttered look. A much larger, more spacious cabin for both front and rear passengers is due to a longer wheelbase and wider track, while Clio s boot capacity has increased to 300 litres. Yet despite these increases, new Clio is around 100kgs lighter than its predecessor, thanks to extensive reductions in weight. The new Clio ensures a truly dynamic drive whichever model you choose: McPherson struts linked to triangular lower wishbones and double bushes at the front and a torsion beam with coil springs at the back, deliver plenty of driver appeal. CAPTUR THE new Captur is arguably the most stylish, versatile, frugal and keenly priced addition to the supermini crossover market yet. Renault s new entrant combines the best of three worlds: the style and driving position of an SUV, the cabin space and versatility of an MPV and the driving experience of a compact hatchback. Sharing its underpinnings and much of its style with the new Clio, the Captur offers fleets a car that can be personalised to each driver with three themed collections, each with a choice of four Packs: Colour, Exterior Gloss, Interior Touch and Style. There are three decals for roof, bonnet and tailgate (depending on the design), including the striking Arizona option, a nod to the original Captur concept car, so many company car drivers can make the car their own. But the Captur is practical as well as characterful: clever touches include zipped removable, wipeable and washable seat covers, dual height boot floor with reversible cover, sliding rear seat bench, and boot space from 377 to 455 litres, up to 1,235 when the seats are folded. Captur s simple four version range is powered by a series of all turbo petrol and diesel engines, all of which have either been recently launched or revised. They include the 0.9-litre TCe 90 and 1.5 dci 90, through to the brand new 1.2 TCe 120, mated exclusively to EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) transmission. There are four trim levels and prices start 12,495 on-theroad: Expression, Expression+, Dynamique MediaNav, and the flagship Dynamique S MediaNav. Even entry level models come with an impressive core specification including 16 alloy wheels, 60/40 split and sliding rear seat bench, body coloured bumpers, cruise control, ECO mode (up to 10% fuel saving), ESC, Electronic Traction Control, front and rear electric windows, Hill Start Assist, speed limiter and trip computer. As usual with Renault s B Team, the Captur comes with a wide array of options including R-Link (including TomTom sat nav, 4x35W Arkamys 3D Sound), reversing camera, heated front seats, and a painted roof for that final, stylish touch. If you re looking to save some cash and downsize your company car while not really sacrificing any space, the Captur could be just the way to do it. 13 It may not look spick and span, but neither might you if you d been round the world 16 times, or been to the moon and were halfway back again. But that is the incredible distances record achieved by a Renault Master on the fleet of family-run firm J&D Couriers, near Droitwitch. And what s more, it s never gone wrong in all those thousands of miles. Dan Abley (pictured), whose grandfather and father Julian founded the company, said: We ve always run Renaults as long as I can remember, and this particular van has never had a spanner on it other than for regular interval services, cam belts and a new gearbox, which would be expected on that mileage, and it has just hit 400,000 miles. We run Kangoos too, and we love them, because they re exactly the same. Just change to oil in them and they keep going and going. We run our fleet with the approach that we buy the vans new and run them until they die, and that s why we use Renaults because nothing unexpected ever happens to them. We ve had some other brands and they get niggles and other problems, but with the Renaults, and this Master, it s a Godsend, the perfect van. We ve also got a Trafic that has just reached 300,000 miles, and we ve never had a problem with that either. That s why we do much prefer Renault, because when you get something that does the job, you stick with it. The worst thing in our industry is that we can have is a phone call in the middle of the day saying a van s broken down, and that mean deliveries and schedules would be put back, and clients would be waiting for us. But by running Renaults, that s a call we ve never had. We ve always run Renaults as long as I can remember, and this particular van has never had a spanner on it other than for regular interval services Renault performs in German reliability survey. When the Automobile German ADAC club published the results of its annual reliability survey Pannenstatistik, every Renault was ranked either good or excellent. The ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club e.v.) is Germany's and Europe's largest automobile club, with more than 18 million members. Every year it analyses its independent breakdown and reliability statistics and rates as many as 500 models on the roads. Every Renault model included in the survey continues to be considered good or excellent, and the notations were made stricter by the ADAC this year. All results remain positive, even after six years of use, which demonstrates the long-lasting reliability of the Renault vehicles. The reliability of our vehicles is a fundamental element, which we are permanently engraving in our genes. We have to pursue more than ever our efforts to guarantee the satisfaction of our customers all around the world, said Jean-Pierre Vallaude, Senior VP Quality

A DESIGN FOR LIFE Renault s Senior Vice President, Corporate Design, Laurens Van Den Acker, has headed up a styling revolution across the latest models, and believes visual appeal is just as important for company car drivers as the technology underneath. In the three years since Renault presented its new family face as the DeZir concept car, the range has evolved rapidly, growing to include its widest ever choice of models, each with some of the highest quality, reliability and efficiency in their segments, and wrapped in an instantly recognisable new style. Recognising the need for this final point is director of design Laurens Van Den Acker. Appointed in 2009, he s been the project leader behind a revolution in Renault s car design. A process which started with identifying the brand s cultural background and ambitions, before finding ways to embed this into everything it produces. Design is important, he says. As much as fleets are concerned with running costs, I believe design is still a big part of the decision-making process for a company car driver. So for me it was important to make sure Renault s model range was as desirable visually as the technology underneath deserves to be, allowing all of the vehicles to appeal to both head and heart. This has always been a brand with a spirit of innovation and that is not about to change. It has also always been a brand with a strong design standpoint that won't change either. However, I knew I would like to break away from the way the brand's values are expressed. The Dutch-born designer has a wealth of international knowledge to draw on. A former designer at Audi, Mazda and Ford, his career has taken him all over the world, exposing him to the multitude of cultural influences from where he could start. In Renault s case, Van Den Acker wanted to reflect a tradition of innovation, but to reflect how as a mass-market manufacturer Renault s model range is also a core part of people s lives. This theme of the human life cycle has influenced every concept car and model launch in the four years since each unique, but showing a distinctive, eyecatching new design. I wanted to bring greater coherence to the line-up, he says. Renault creates cars that are pertinent to every stage Twin Z the latest of Renault s design-inspired concepts... in the human life cycle. Based on this idea, we created a daisy with six petals, in order to establish strong ties with our customers, and each is represented by a concept car. Life starts with falling in love, as illustrated by the DeZir concept, before exploring the world together in an SUV or crossover such as the Captur. R-Space then demonstrates the founding of a family, while the Frendzy commercial vehicle shows the world of work. In short, this daisy is focused on life and on people. It is a strategy full of passion and emotion, with a language based on human forms: simple, sensual and warm. Crucially, though, the brand s recent concept cars have done more than simply reflect unobtainable dreams of a design team. It means the same designers behind the concept car are now tasked with bringing it to a showroom-ready reality without losing its identity in the process. I realised that we needed a strong connection between concept cars and the production cars, he says. A concept car is over exaggerated from all points of view. For example, super large wheels, a sturdy profile, sacrificed spaciousness, in other words, anything that will impress. A mass production car answers to a daily need. What is at stake for us is that the spirit of the concept remains. The end results are already making changes at the core of the Renault range. Elements of the DeZir concept reached showrooms in the Twizy and fourth-generation Clio, while the rugged muscularity and two-tone body of the Captur concept has closely informed the production car of the same name. Meanwhile, the prominent Renault diamond and horizontal grille design are finding their way onto an everwider cross-section of the range. And Van Den Acker believes this focus on design will continue to reap rewards: It takes a lot of talent not just designers we need talented model-makers, planners, engineers, communicators, product people... it's a team effort. But if the job is well done it can really have an impact on the company

16 RENAULT MÉGANE FORMULA 1 TECHNOLOGY FOR YOUR FLEET A prolific career in Formula 1 has offered an extreme environment for Renault to test innovations now employed in the Mégane family, resulting in a whole grid of real-world benefits for fleets. DURABILITY FORMULA 1 engines operate at incredibly high loads. The outgoing V8 revs to 18,000rpm over long periods during a race, and Renault has a proven record for reliability in the sport. With the new rules in 2014, each team will only be allowed five units to last the full 19 rounds of the championship. This makes motorsport the ideal proving ground for developments which inform real-world reliability. The Mégane has scored highly in reliability studies carried out by French magazine L Automobile and the German recovery company ADAC s breakdown statistics for 2012, proving Renault s ongoing drive for quality is reaping rewards. Its long 18,000-miles, or two year, service intervals are a sign of its durability and keep SMR costs down too. Turn to page 24 to find out more about the F1 technology PERFORMANCE WHETHER it s the outgoing V8 or the forthcoming V6 Power Unit due for its debut next year, Renaultsport is renowned offering high performance from a small capacity engine. A third of the 2013 grid used powerplants developed by Renault s engineers, making the carmaker a backbone of this globally recognised sport. With engineers shared across road and motorsport engines, that same expertise quickly finds its way into production models. The Mégane features a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines under the Energy family, all offering at least the same power and torque as their predecessors despite a drop in capacity. 17 ENERGY RECOVERY RENAULT was one of the first manufacturers to introduce a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) in Formula 1 back in The system harnessed energy which would otherwise be lost as heat, storing it as electricity which can be used to provide a power boost when required. For the 2014 season, this will be able to provide up to 160bhp of electrical assistance under heavy acceleration. Not only is this applicable to Renault s electric vehicles, but the Mégane uses it too. Its advanced energy recovery system is able to recharge the battery while the car is slowing down. Paired with a new Stop & Start system, this alone offers a 5% improvement in fuel economy with reductions in running costs for drivers and fleet operators alike. EFFICIENCY MOTORSPORT may not be known for its green credentials, but large fuel tanks add unnecessary weight and carry a performance sacrifice. It means Renault s F1 engines are designed to use as little fuel as possible without affecting the overall power output. This is just as valuable on the road. Using F1-derived lowfriction internals and ancillaries, with a downsized engine and direct fuel injection, the Mégane is able to offer some of the best fuel efficiency figures in its segment. The 1.5-litre dci 110 emits just 90g/km CO2 without resorting to hybrid technology, while returning 80.7mpg, guaranteeing low BiK liability for drivers while covering over 1,000 miles on a full tank of diesel. Wren Kitchens, based in Howden, East Yorkshire, is the UK's fastest growing designer, manufacturer and retailer of fully assembled kitchen cabinets. As a result, its fleet is having to expand quickly to keep up with demand, and it has been using Renault vans and cars to do this. Initially, Wren took delivery of 35 Kangoo vans painted in their corporate Wren green at the end of 2011, and ordered a further 10 Kangoos in April of this year. But such is the pace of change that it has had to increase its fleet still further: a further 14 Kangoo vans plus 22 Mégane Sport Tourers will be delivered in September While the numbers may not seem large compared to some fleets, there is a bigger story: each new Kangoo is ordered when a new Wren store is opened somewhere in the UK, so that designers and support staff can visit customers. That s quite an expansion. It s a company that has grown very fast to a 200 million turnover business, having bucked the trend in a sector very hard hit by the recession, with a highly advanced logistics and distribution network, and stores throughout the country. It is now a solus Renault vehicle fleet too, with its size having grown from 20 to 90-plus vehicles in the space of three years. Additionally Wren is now looking to roll out Renault Trafic as part of a franchise package to its sub contracted kitchen fitters which could see a further vehicles ordered over the next 12 months, all with Wren branding. LOGAN MCV MAXIMUM SPACE, MINIMUM COST The fourth member of Dacia s UK model range adds an irresistible combination of large estate car versatility and supermini running costs, all packaged in a robust, attractive design. 19 EFFICIENCY AS STANDARD No corners have been cut when it comes to the Logan MCV s drivetrains. These include 90bhp petrol and diesel engines, both equipped with an eco mode which adjusts climate control and engine settings for a 10-15% improvement in fuel efficiency, and a gearshift indicator to help drivers get the most miles per gallon of fuel. The most efficient of the range is the 1.5-litre dci 90, a derivative of the Renault-Nissan Alliance s biggestselling engine which returns 74.3mpg and emits 99g/km on the combined cycle. Petrol options are no less advanced, including the new TCe 90. Debuted on the new Renault Clio, this turbocharged three-cylinder engine displaces just 900cc but offers a versatile 90bhp, while achieving 56.5mpg and emitting 116g/km CO2. 22 COMMERCIAL VEHICLES TWIZY CARGO DELIVERS! The brilliant new Twizy Cargo offers fleets an innovative solution to lightweight, low-emission load carrying and deliveries. Renault has created perhaps the most unusual light commercial vehicle on the market. Unlike the heavy-duty Master or the mid-weight Trafic and Kangoo, Renault s Twizy Cargo is powered solely by electricity, and by removing the rear seat from the Twizy urban runabout, room has been made for a 180 litre load-carrying compartment. With a 75kg payload and a lockable load compartment, the Twizy Cargo offers an interesting alternative take on urban distribution, particularly for style-conscious city companies and those keen to promote a green corporate message. Thanks to its 17hp electric motor the Twizy easily keeps pace with town traffic, its compact dimensions making it easy to thread between larger delivery vehicles and to park at the roadside, where the compact Renault can be parked end-on in a standard car space. Top speed is up to 56mph, so the Twizy can hold its own on larger roads too, though it is at its best in the urban environment. 23 A single charge offers up to 62 miles of range, though Renault believes that real world conditions will see customers using the Twizy for up to 50 miles between charges. The commercial can be topped up once it reaches its destination, thanks to a built-in charging cable and a standard threepin plug. A full charge takes around three and a half hours and, depending on your electrical supply deal, should cost around 1. What s more, the zero-emission Twizy Cargo incurs no Congestion Charge within the centre of London, contributing to customer cost savings and reducing emissions for all road users in the Capital. While the Twizy Cargo is available in four standard colours - white, black orange and blue, Renault has recently launched a customisation process that allows customers to have parts of the vehicle professionally wrapped, to provide a marketing statement on the move. Prices start from 250 for the doors to 395 for the doors and frames, and go right up to 795 for the whole vehicle. A colour configurator is available at allowing customers to see how the vehicle will look with a variety of designs and colours applied. For small businesses or large national chains, the Twizy Cargo provides a unique, low cost urban delivery solution unlike any other LCV. R-LINK BOOSTS RENAULT LCVs... Renault s innovative R-Link multimedia technology, initially being installed in Clio, ZOE and Captur cars, is now also available to commercial vehicle users, through the latest Kangoo van. R-Link is standard equipment on top of the range Kangoo Sport vans and a 675 ex.vat option on core Kangoo models. R-Link brings together all of the vehicle s media functions in a single screen. This includes radio, audio streaming, Bluetooth telephone connectivity and Carminat TomTom satellite navigation. 24 MOTORSPORT A dominant force in Formula 1 for over 35 years, Renaultsport s engineering expertise isn t just winning races, it s helping to deliver efficient, reliable and fun-to-drive road vehicles too. DOWNSIZING & TURBOCHARGING Renault proved the benefits of downsizing in the late 1970s when it became the first manufacturer to enter a small capacity turbocharged Formula 1 car, becoming so successful that the rest of the grid quickly followed suit. The technology has moved on in the 30 years since, but the 2014 Power Unit takes a similar approach. Despite being a third smaller in capacity than the outgoing 2.4-litre V8, the new 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 produces more power while reducing fuel consumption by 40%. The carmaker s roadgoing vehicles are experiencing the same revolution. Although the latest generation of Energy petrol and diesel engines are smaller than their predecessors, which helps contribute to a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the use of turbocharging allows them to offer more power and torque than the units they replace. Like the Power Unit, these all use direct fuel injection to offer a precisely controlled and highly efficient combustion process. ELECTRIC MOTORS Renault is the only manufacturer to offer a complete range of electric vehicles, so unsurprisingly Formula 1 isn t only a testing ground for conventional engine technology. The 2014 Power Unit uses the most advanced energy recovery system yet, featuring two electric motor-generators and a battery. Knowledge gained on track will be used to help develop next-generation electric vehicle drivetrains, and to advance similar systems for petrol and diesel vehicles. On deceleration, the electric motors act as generators. Connected to the turbocharger and engine crankshaft, they recapture energy which would otherwise be lost as heat to recharge the car s battery. This can then be used to drive the motors while accelerating, providing a 160bhp power boost at the crankshaft and spinning the turbocharger quicker to avoid turbo lag at low revs, resulting in torque output closer to the old V8 F1 engine. The whole process is controlled by an intelligent energy management system, which decides the most efficient way to use the two motors.

25 EFFICIENT INTERNALS Pursuing ever-higher performance, Formula 1 engineers have worked hard to minimise the energy used to rotate the internals of an engine, known as pumping losses. Low-friction coatings on moving parts and a variable oil pump help minimise unnecessary engine load during races, but that same technology is used to widen the gap between fill-ups on the road, too. Motorsport has also donated its unique thermal management technology to Renault s road cars. Coolant is flowed through each cylinder independently, requiring a smaller and more efficient water pump and for hot areas to be cooled more efficiency. In turn, this allows power outputs to be raised for smaller engines without affecting reliability. Engineering used to build engines capable of 15,000rpm in race conditions is also helping Renault to make the petrol and diesel engines of its cars and vans more durable too. The new 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 produces more power while reducing fuel consumption by 40% TWIN RUN BRIDGES GAP Unveiled at the 71st Monaco Grand Prix, Renault s race-ready Twin Run concept plays homage to the manufacturer s mid-engined motorsport champions of old, while previewing the styling cues of a future city car. Twin Run represents the fifth element of Laurens Van Den Acker s design strategy, finished in electric blue denoting its position as a car for Play and with Renault s latest design language. Yet despite its modernity, the Twin Run has close DNA links to the iconic mid-engined R5 Maxi Turbo rally car of the 1980s, inheriting its flat, square headlamps, spotlamps and flared rear arches with red accents. It s also built to be raced. Underneath bodywork made from glass-polyester composite and carbon fibre is a tubular, motorsport-derived chassis with a midmounted 320bhp V6 engine, just like the Clio V6. This sonorous six-cylinder is based on the unit found in the Megane Trophy Racer, and with a kerb weight matching the Twingo at 950kg, it gives the compact racer giant-killing abilities on track.
