3 Pattern Recognition Many systems in nature display instability before they fail. Heart failure is one example. The heart does not gently slow to a dead stop. Instead, hearts often demonstrate rapid or irregular rhythms before they fail. Abnormal heart rhythms can be serious or even deadly. Earthquakes are yet another example. Seismic Gap Theory is the study of the frequency and magnitude of earthquake activity in a given locale. It is used to predict pending earthquakes based on irregular patterns. 3

4 Pattern Recognition Even the outcome of U.S. Presidential elections have been correctly forecasted in the last eight presidential elections (1984 through 2012) by a system inspired by earthquake research. This system was developed in 1981 by American historian Allan Lichtman and Russian scientist Vladimir Keilis -Borok, an authority on the mathematics of prediction models. Car batteries also display instability as they near end-oflife. is the first to note and make use of this phenomenon. 4

5 Patented Battery Failure Analysis The engine s start time and start voltage are used to quantify erratic battery behavior. After the engine has been at rest for an appropriate number of hours, the start-time and start-voltage are captured when the engine is started. This information is saved indexed by temperature and is the basis for detecting erratic battery behavior. Engine size, battery size and battery type (i.e. flooded, sealed, gel, etc.) are irrelevant. This analysis does not look for a trend line. It is described in detail in U.S. Patent 8.386,199 5

6 Will It Work in Your Car? In the past 5 years we have sold over 700 BatteryMole monitors through Amazon.com. Since Amazon processes all of our orders and performs the shipping our monitor does sometime end up in surprising places. During pre-production testing there was one instance where a vehicle failed to start with no prior warning. The problem was a loose battery cable. Other than that we do not know of a single instance where the BatteryMole failed to warn the driver. 6

7 These traces show a battery approaching its end of life. The start voltage and start times shown here are erratic. Several weeks after these traces were taken this battery died. 8 There are 3 components to BatteryMole Monitoring 1) Charging System Temperature, time and voltage are used to detect a faulty alternator. Overcharging causes premature plate corrosion and shortened battery life. Undercharging results in irreversible plate sulfation and diminished battery capacity. 8

10 3) Battery Health When the engine is started, the engine acts as a dynamic load tester. By capturing start voltages and start times the erratic behavior of near death batteries is detected. There has never been a single instance reported that these algorithms failed to detect a battery going bad. Start Time Start Voltage 10

11 Who will be First? Not even a $4,500,000 Lamborghini Veneno Roadster can warn the driver to replace the starter battery. Honda attempted such a system on their 2011 Odyssey minivan. It didn t work and was abandoned in It remains to be seen which car maker will be first. 11
