4 Preface This VGB Standard, Implementation guideline for motors and variable-speed power drive systems has been compiled as a new standard by the VGB Project Group of the same name. It is a continuation of the Supplementary Agreements for the Supply of High-Voltage Electric Motors for Use in Power Plants (ZLM) and Supplementary Agreements for the Supply of Converter Drives for Use in Power Plants (ZLU) published by VDEW, and integrates the new requirements and capabilities resulting from the use of medium voltage motors and variable-speed power drive systems. The recommendations of the ZLM and ZLU, previously separate, have now been combined in a new VGB Standard. The new edition also resulted from the need to incorporate the requirements of new standards and regulations. For compilation of this Standard, the VGB Working Panel on Electrical Equipment established a Project Group in which experts from European power plant operators and manufacturers were represented. The aim of this VGB Standard is to provide an effective aid to the parties involved in the planning and specification of motors and variable-speed power drive systems (especially design engineers, operators and manufacturers) by means of extensive harmonization. Account is taken of fundamental process and electrical engineering design requirements including the necessary quality standards for the motors and variable-speed power drive systems in power plants. The harmonization achieved also promotes effectiveness and economy among manufacturers, designers and operators. This VGB Standard has been compiled on the basis of the best professional knowledge available, but cannot claim to be exhaustive.
